"You were accusing me."<\/p>\n
"I was asking whether you canceled it."<\/p>\n
He sighed.<\/p>\n
"I didn't think we needed to get into all of this over the phone."<\/p>\n
I looked down at the floor.<\/p>\n
For years, I had accepted the idea that difficult questions should wait until Daniel was ready to discuss them.<\/p>\n
Sometimes that was reasonable.<\/p>\n
Sometimes it meant the questions never got answered.<\/p>\n

He didn't respond right away.<\/p>\n
I added, "I'm not asking you to guess what the hospital will decide. I'm asking you to help establish what happened."<\/p>\n
He said he would look at the paperwork and see what he could find.<\/p>\n
It was not a complete answer.<\/p>\n
It was the first practical step he had offered.<\/p>\n
"Please do that," I said.<\/p>\n
Then I ended the call.<\/p>\n
I stood in the hallway for a moment, letting the conversation settle.<\/p>\n
I felt angry.<\/p>\n
