I ask what happened, and he tells me to come home. I still don't have the answer."

She thought about that.

"Maybe he doesn't know."

"Maybe," I said. "That's one of the things I need to find out."

It was important that I didn't make Daniel into a villain in Grace's mind simply because I was frightened and angry.

I had questions.

Some of them were serious.

But questions were not answers.

I had to leave room for facts I didn't yet have, even while I refused to ignore what was already clear.

Grace had been in pain.

She had been afraid to tell us how bad it was.

The hospital had identified an authorization problem.

Those things were enough to justify staying and asking for clarification.

I didn't need to invent a reason.

My phone vibrated again.

Daniel had sent a message asking whether I had spoken with anyone who could resolve the issue.

I replied that the hospital was still verifying the record.

Then I asked him directly whether he knew anything about the cancellation that he had not yet explained.

I waited.

The reply did not come immediately.

I put the phone down and looked at Grace.

She was watching me, but she didn't ask what I had written.

I wondered how much of our family life had taught her that every unanswered message might lead to a difficult conversation.

I wished she didn't have to think about those things.

"Do you want me to tell you what I'm asking Dad?" I said.

She hesitated.

"Only if it's not going to make you upset."

I gave her a small, tired smile.

"I can handle my own feelings. You don't need to protect me from them."

She looked at me.

I realized that I had often said something similar to Daniel, but in practice I had spent years managing his reactions.

Grace had been watching.

She had learned that keeping adults comfortable was part of staying safe from conflict.

I couldn't expect her to unlearn that in one afternoon.

"I asked him whether he knows anything about the cancellation," I explained. "That's all."

"What if he gets mad because you asked?"

"Then I'll handle that conversation."

She looked at her hands.

"Okay."

I waited a little longer for a reply.

When the phone finally vibrated, I read Daniel's message.

He said he didn't understand why I was treating the matter like a personal accusation.

He said the hospital had its own procedures and that I should stop assuming he was responsible for everything.

But he still didn't answer the question directly.

I read the message once more.

Then I put the phone down.

My first instinct was to write back that I wasn't assuming anything.

I wanted to explain that the hospital had connected his information with the cancellation.

I wanted him to stop acting as though my question was the problem.

But I had already told him what I needed.

Repeating myself would not make the answer appear.

I returned my attention to Grace.

She was rubbing the frayed cuff of her sweatshirt.

"Did he answer?" she asked.

"Not clearly."

"Does that mean he did it?"

"No. It means I still don't have a clear answer."

She looked at me for a long moment.

I hoped she could see that I wasn't trying to hide the truth from her.

I was trying not to pretend that I knew it.

A little later, a nurse returned to check on Grace.

She asked how she was feeling and listened to her answer.

I asked whether there had been any change in the administrative review.

There had not.

The nurse explained that the appropriate staff were still working through it.

I thanked her and wrote down the information.

I was learning to ask the same question in a more useful way.

Not, "Why is this happening to us?"

Not, "Who is responsible?"

But, "What do we know now, and what still needs to be confirmed?"

The first questions came from fear.

The last question helped me understand what to do next.

Grace looked at the phone when I finished typing.

"Can we talk about something else?"

"Of course."

"What are we going to have for dinner?"

I almost laughed, not because the question was funny, but because it was so ordinary.

"I don't know yet."

"Are we going to eat here?"

"That depends on how things go."

She nodded.

"I don't want eggs."

I looked at her.

For a moment, I saw the kitchen again.

The skillet.

The darkening butter.

Daniel's pen tapping against his watch.

Grace standing near the table with one hand over her stomach.

I had heard her say she didn't want breakfast, and I had let the conversation become about her attitude instead of her pain.

"I won't make you decide about dinner right now," I said. "We'll follow the guidance the medical team gives us."

She seemed relieved.

I didn't tell her she had to eat.

I didn't tell her she would feel better if she tried harder.

I didn't turn the question into a lesson about responsibility.

I simply let her be a child who was uncomfortable and tired.

We sat together for a while.

The hallway continued to fill and empty with people.

Every time someone approached the room, Grace looked up.

I didn't tell her to stop worrying.

I couldn't know what she was thinking.

Instead, I stayed beside her and answered when she asked me something.

Eventually, my phone screen went dark.

I left it that way.

I would check it again if I needed to.

For now, I wanted to be present enough to notice when Grace needed help.

I couldn't undo the cancellation.

I couldn't force Daniel to give me a clear explanation.

I couldn't make the hospital move faster than its own process allowed.

But I could keep asking reasonable questions.

I could make sure Grace's pain remained part of every conversation about what happened next.

And I could refuse to let the absence of an answer become a reason to stop asking.

Click here to continue reading: PART 15: When Daniel Finally Stopped Talking About My Reaction and Started Talking About the Paperwork, I Listened Carefully Without Pretending His Explanation Answered Everything

I checked the time on my phone.
