I think I should have made it easier for you to tell me."

She looked at the blanket.

"But I didn't tell you everything."

"You told me your stomach hurt."

"I could have said it was worse."

"You shouldn't have to find the perfect words before I take you seriously."

She was quiet.

I wished I could reach back through the last few days and sit beside her at the first moment she had wondered whether her pain was important enough to mention.

I couldn't do that.

I could only listen now.

She pulled one sleeve over her hand and pinched the frayed edge between her fingers.

"I thought if I waited, it might stop."

"That makes sense."

"And then I thought if I told you, Dad would say I was making a big deal out of nothing."

I kept my voice steady.

"Did you think I would say that too?"

She didn't answer immediately.

That pause hurt more than if she had said yes.

"Sometimes," she admitted.

I looked down at our joined hands.

I had believed that my quiet disagreements with Daniel counted as protection.

I had assumed Grace could tell that I didn't always agree with him, even when I didn't say so.

But she couldn't read the thoughts I kept to myself.

She could only see what I did.

And too often, what she saw was me allowing a conversation to end before her concerns had been heard.

"I'm sorry I made you wonder about that," I said.

Grace watched me carefully.

"Are you mad at Dad?"

I could have answered with a simple no.

Instead, I tried to be honest.

"I'm upset about what happened today. I'm also worried about you. But I don't want you to feel like you have to choose sides."

She nodded slowly.

"Sometimes I feel like I do."

I felt my chest tighten.

"When?"

"When you and Dad disagree. I don't know if I'm supposed to say anything."

I had known our disagreements made the house uncomfortable.

I hadn't understood how much Grace felt she had to manage her place inside them.

"You don't have to settle things between us," I told her. "You don't have to defend either of us."

"What if one of you asks me what the other one said?"

"You can tell us you don't want to be in the middle."

She looked doubtful.

"Will that make Dad mad?"

"It might frustrate him. But you still shouldn't have to carry messages between us."

I could see her thinking about that.

I didn't tell her that everything would be easy from now on.

I couldn't know that.

Instead, I promised to do my part to keep adult disagreements from becoming her burden.

She leaned back against the pillow.

For a while, the only sound between us was the quiet movement of people in the hallway.

Then Grace asked whether the hospital had found out anything new.

"Not yet."

"Is that because of the paperwork?"

"They're still reviewing it. I don't know whether it's affecting anything else, and I don't want to guess."

She nodded.

"Will you tell me when they know?"

"Yes."

I was careful not to tell her more than I knew.

The last thing I wanted was to give her a frightening explanation that turned out to be wrong.

My phone was still on the table.

Daniel had sent another message, but I hadn't opened it.

I could see the notification on the screen.

I knew I would have to speak with him again.

I knew that ignoring every message would not resolve anything.

But I also knew that answering each one the moment it arrived would keep pulling my attention away from the person who needed me most.

I picked up the phone and read the message.

Daniel wanted to know when I planned to return home.

He said the situation had gone on long enough.

He still hadn't explained the cancellation.

I typed a reply, then stopped.

My first version tried to reassure him.

It explained that I wasn't trying to embarrass him or create a problem.

It promised that I would discuss everything when I got home.

I read it once.

Then I deleted it.

I wasn't trying to embarrass him.

But that wasn't the important question.

The important question was what Grace needed and what the hospital had to tell us.

I wrote a shorter message.

"I am waiting for the hospital to clarify the authorization issue and explain the next steps for Grace. I will update you when I have reliable information."

I sent it.

Then I put the phone down.

Grace had watched me.

"Did you tell him we're staying?"

"I told him we're waiting for the hospital to explain what happens next."

She nodded.

"Is he going to come here?"

"I don't know."

She pulled the blanket over her knees.

I could see that the uncertainty bothered her.

I wanted to make it disappear, but I couldn't control what Daniel would decide to do.

I could control whether I left Grace alone with her worries.

"If he comes, I'll speak with him," I said. "You don't have to manage that conversation."

She gave a small nod.

A nurse entered a short time later to check on Grace.

She asked how the pain felt now and whether anything had changed.

Grace answered in her own words.

I let her speak without interrupting.

When the nurse finished, I asked if there was any new information about the record.

She said there wasn't a confirmed update yet.

I thanked her.

The answer was disappointing, but at least it was clear.

After she left, I wrote down the time and what she had told me.

Grace glanced at the phone.

"You write everything down now."

"I don't want to forget something important."

"Do you think you'll forget?"

"Maybe. I'm tired, and there's a lot happening."

She seemed to accept that.

I wasn't trying to turn every conversation into evidence.

I was trying to separate what I knew from what I feared.

That distinction mattered more than I had realized.

I had spent years allowing Daniel's confidence to settle questions I hadn't fully understood.

Now I wanted to make sure I wasn't doing the same thing in the opposite direction.

I didn't know why the authorization had been canceled.

I didn't know whether Daniel had requested it, misunderstood something, or knew more than he had told me.

I knew only what the hospital had communicated so far.

I could ask for clarification without deciding the answer in advance.

That was what I intended to do.

Grace shifted against the pillow and closed her eyes.

I sat beside her, listening to her breathing.

The afternoon was still moving forward, even though we seemed to be waiting for every important thing.

I rested my hands in my lap.

For once, I didn't try to plan every possible conversation with Daniel.

I didn't rehearse explanations in my head.

I didn't search for the perfect sentence that would make him agree with me.

I stayed where I was.

When Grace opened her eyes again, she found me looking at her.

"You're still here," she said.

"Yes."

She looked at me for another moment.

Then she closed her eyes again.

I understood that my presence could not erase the moments when I had failed her.

But I hoped it could become something she could rely on now.

Not a promise that no one would ever get angry.

Not a promise that every answer would come quickly.

Just the steady knowledge that when she told me something was wrong, I would listen.

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: The Hospital Still Had No Confirmed Explanation for the Canceled Authorization, So I Stopped Guessing and Asked What We Could Actually Establish

Grace had fallen quiet again when I noticed the cup beside her bed was empty.
