Then it comes back."

"Does it hurt when you eat?"

"Sometimes."

I kept my face calm.

I wanted her to feel that she could describe what was happening without having to defend every detail.

"Thank you for telling me."

She picked at a loose thread on her cuff.

"I didn't want Dad to think I was trying to get out of something."

"Out of what?"

"School. Dinner. Chores. Anything."

I looked at her.

She wasn't accusing Daniel of anything dramatic.

She was describing the small decisions that had become difficult because she feared being judged for how she felt.

"I thought if I just did everything normally, it would stop," she said.

I swallowed.

"Did you tell him your stomach hurt before this morning?"

"Once."

"What did he say?"

She hesitated long enough that I could tell she was choosing her words.

"He said I was probably nervous about something."

"And did you feel nervous?"

"Sometimes."

She glanced at me.

"But it still hurt."

I nodded slowly.

"Those two things can both be true."

She looked surprised.

I wondered how often she had heard adults treat feelings and physical pain as if they canceled each other out.

"If you're nervous, it doesn't mean the pain isn't real," I said.

Grace looked toward the doorway again.

"That's not how Dad talks about it."

I had no easy answer.

I could tell her that Daniel was wrong to dismiss her.

I could also admit that I had sometimes allowed his explanations to settle the matter because challenging him felt exhausting.

Both things were true.

"I should have asked more questions," I said.

"You were busy."

"That doesn't mean I shouldn't have listened."

She was quiet for a moment.

Then she asked, "Were you mad at me this morning?"

The question caught me off guard.

"No."

"You looked upset."

I remembered standing at the stove, the butter darkening in the pan, Daniel tapping his pen against his watch.

I remembered the strain of trying to keep breakfast moving while the room grew tense.

"I was upset about the situation," I said. "But I can see why it might have looked like I was upset with you."

Grace's eyes dropped to the blanket.

"I thought I was making things difficult."

"You weren't."

She didn't look convinced.

I moved my hand closer to hers.

"I need you to hear this, Grace. Telling me you're in pain isn't making things difficult. Asking for help isn't doing something wrong."

She rubbed her thumb along the seam of her sleeve.

"I know."

But the way she said it made me think she was repeating something she wanted to believe.

I didn't ask her to say it again.

I couldn't make her trust those words simply by repeating them.

I had to show her what they meant.

That meant taking her pain seriously.

It meant not letting Daniel's frustration decide whether her concerns deserved attention.

It also meant recognizing that she might need time before she believed I would respond differently in the future.

The nurse returned and asked Grace another set of questions.

This time, Grace answered without looking at me first.

She described the tight feeling and explained that it had come and gone over several days.

I listened, careful not to answer for her.

When the nurse asked whether anything had changed recently, Grace said she wasn't sure.

The nurse thanked her and explained that the team was continuing to review the information.

I asked whether there was anything else they needed from me.

She said she would let us know.

After she left, Grace looked at me.

"Did I answer right?"

I shook my head gently.

"You don't have to answer right. You just have to tell them what you feel."

"What if I forget something?"

"Then you can tell them when you remember."

She looked at the ceiling.

"I hate not knowing what's happening."

"So do I."

That answer seemed to comfort her more than a promise would have.

I wasn't pretending to have everything under control.

I was letting her know that uncertainty didn't mean she had to face it by herself.

My phone buzzed.

Daniel had sent another message.

He asked whether the hospital had resolved the problem.

I replied that the staff were still verifying the record and that Grace was being assessed.

He responded that he wanted me to stop turning a simple situation into a family crisis.

I stared at the words.

I wanted to write a long answer.

I wanted to list every question he had avoided and every moment I had let his certainty silence mine.

I wanted to make him understand what Grace had just told me.

But I knew that sending those words now would not make him understand.

It might only pull me into another argument while Grace sat waiting beside me.

I put the phone down.

For the first time, I understood that I did not have to answer every accusation as soon as it arrived.

I could choose what needed my attention.

Grace needed me.

The hospital's explanation was still incomplete.

Those were the things I had to stay with.

After a while, Grace asked if I was going to tell Daniel what she had said.

I considered the question carefully.

"I won't repeat every private thing you tell me just to prove a point," I said. "But if something matters for your care or safety, I may need to talk about it with the people who can help."

She nodded.

"Are you going to tell him I said he gets mad?"

"I won't use your words to start an argument. But I won't pretend I haven't heard you, either."

She seemed to consider that answer.

Then she asked, "Can you just stay here for now?"

"Of course."

I settled back into the chair.

The legs scraped softly against the floor.

Grace leaned her head against the pillow and closed her eyes.

I watched her breathe.

I thought about how carefully she had tried to make herself easy to manage.

How she had tried to eat when her stomach hurt.

How she had worried about being believed.

How she had asked whether she was in trouble before asking what would happen next.

I had thought of myself as a protective mother.

I had believed that because I loved Grace, she could always come to me.

But love was not the same as making it easy to speak.

Sometimes I had been so busy keeping the household calm that I had failed to notice who was paying for that calm.

I couldn't change the years behind us.

I could stop asking Grace to prove that her pain mattered.

I could stop treating Daniel's confidence as the final word.

And I could keep my attention on the child who had finally found the courage to tell me how frightened she had been.

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: I Stopped Trying to Make Daniel Understand Me Over the Phone and Focused on Getting Clear Answers About Grace, One Question at a Time

Grace became quieter as the afternoon went on.
