I don't want to give you incorrect information."

"All right."

"I'll let you know when I have something more definite."

After she left, I looked at Grace.

She was watching the door.

"Did I do something wrong?" she asked.

The question came so quietly that I almost wished I had misunderstood it.

"No."

She rubbed the edge of her sleeve between her thumb and forefinger.

"Then why is it so difficult?"

I felt my throat tighten.

I had no explanation that would make sense to a thirteen-year-old who had come to the hospital because her stomach hurt.

"I don't know yet," I said. "But the paperwork isn't your fault."

She studied my face.

"Is Dad mad?"

I thought about the calls I had ignored while speaking to the staff.

I thought about his message telling me we needed to discuss this.

"He's upset with me," I said carefully.

"Because I came here?"

"Because I decided we needed to find out what was wrong."

Grace looked down at her hands.

"I told you I could wait."

Those words hurt more than I expected.

I remembered the breakfast table, the eggs she hadn't wanted, and the way she had held her stomach before Daniel called her behavior an attention routine.

I remembered how easily I had let the conversation end.

"You shouldn't have had to convince me," I said.

She didn't answer.

"I should have listened more carefully the first time."

"You're listening now."

I looked at her.

There was no accusation in her voice.

That made it worse.

I reached for her hand, leaving her room to pull away if she wanted.

She placed her fingers in mine.

Her hand was cool.

I held it gently and tried not to make the moment about my guilt.

I could apologize to her, but I couldn't ask her to comfort me for the things I had failed to notice.

For a while, neither of us spoke.

The hallway carried the ordinary sounds of a hospital.

Footsteps passed the door.

A cart rattled somewhere nearby.

Someone spoke softly at the nurses' station.

The world continued moving while I sat beside my daughter and waited for information that should have been simple.

My phone vibrated against my knee.

Daniel was calling again.

I looked at the screen.

Grace saw his name.

Her fingers tightened around mine.

"You can answer," she said.

"Do you want me to?"

She hesitated.

"I don't know."

That answer told me more than a quick yes or no would have.

She was already thinking about what would happen after the call.

She was wondering whether Daniel's voice would change the atmosphere around her, even from miles away.

"I'll talk to him later," I said. "Right now, I'm here with you."

I silenced the phone.

A moment later, another message appeared.

I didn't open it immediately.

Instead, I asked Grace whether she wanted some water.

She said yes.

I found the cup on the small table and helped her adjust the straw so she wouldn't have to sit forward too much.

She took a few sips.

Then she rested against the pillow.

The ordinary action steadied me.

There were things I could do without knowing the whole story.

I could bring her water.

I could listen when she spoke.

I could ask questions when something didn't make sense.

I could refuse to leave simply because another person wanted the situation to end.

My phone vibrated again.

This time, I opened Daniel's message.

He had written that I was making the situation more complicated than it needed to be.

He said the hospital had procedures, and he expected me to follow them.

He did not explain the cancellation.

I read the message twice.

Then I put the phone facedown.

For years, I would have answered immediately.

I would have tried to reassure him that I understood, even when I didn't.

I would have explained every decision until he was satisfied that I had considered his opinion.

That afternoon, I couldn't make myself do it.

I had a daughter beside me who was still waiting to learn why her pain had brought us into a room where adults were discussing authorization instead of giving us clear answers.

She needed me to pay attention.

So I did.

A staff member came back later and told me the team was still reviewing the situation.

There was no new explanation for the cancellation.

There was no final decision about the administrative issue.

I asked what we should expect next.

She explained what she could and said she would return when she had more information.

I thanked her.

After she left, Grace shifted in her seat.

"Mom, if they say we have to leave, will we?"

I looked at her.

"I'll ask what that means for your care before I agree to anything."

"Even if Dad says to come home?"

I took a breath.

"Even then, I'm going to make sure we understand what you need."

She seemed to think about that.

Then she nodded.

I didn't know what the next conversation with Daniel would bring.

I didn't know what the hospital would discover about the canceled authorization.

I didn't know how long we would have to wait.

But I knew I would not make Grace carry those questions alone.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: Daniel Kept Asking Me to Come Home, but I Needed Someone to Explain the Record Before I Could Trust Any of Us to Understand What Had Happened

The chair beside Grace's bed was harder than it looked.
