I don't have time to argue."

"Then stop arguing."

I pressed my fingers against my forehead.

"You told me to bring her home, but you haven't explained why her authorization was canceled."

"I told you that you don't understand the situation."

"That's not an explanation."

He went quiet.

I waited.

For once, I wasn't going to fill the silence for him.

Finally, he said, "There are things involving the paperwork that you haven't been handling."

I looked toward Grace again.

"She's our daughter."

"I know who she is, Rebecca."

"Then why am I finding out about this from hospital staff?"

He didn't answer directly.

He said that I was making assumptions and that the matter needed to be handled properly.

I asked him what he meant.

He repeated that I should come home.

I ended the call before he could turn the conversation into another lecture about my judgment.

When I returned to Grace, she looked up at me.

"Is he angry?"

I sat beside her.

"He's upset."

"Because we're here?"

I took a moment before answering.

"Yes, I think so."

She folded her hands in her lap.

I wanted to tell her that her father's feelings were not her responsibility.

I wanted to tell her that adults could be upset without children needing to fix anything.

Most of all, I wanted her to stop looking at every difficult moment as proof that she had done something wrong.

"You don't need to worry about his reaction," I told her.

She nodded.

I wasn't sure she believed me.

I wasn't sure I had given her enough reason to.

A staff member came over and asked whether Grace's pain had changed.

I told her that it was still present.

She asked Grace a few questions, and I stayed close while she answered.

The staff member explained that the clinical team would determine what assessment was needed.

I listened carefully.

I wanted to make sure that the administrative confusion did not cause us to overlook the reason we had come.

Grace needed medical attention.

Everything else could wait until we understood what was happening.

I asked whether there was anything I should bring from home that would help them review her information.

The staff member suggested that any relevant paperwork or details about her existing care arrangements might be useful.

I told her I would look for them.

That was when I remembered the folder Daniel kept in his study.

He had always insisted that important documents belonged in one place.

Insurance information, medical paperwork, account statements, and letters from offices that sent things we rarely discussed.

He had arranged the folder system himself.

I had trusted him to keep everything in order.

Now I couldn't remember the last time I had opened one of those folders.

I returned to Grace.

"We may need to check some paperwork at home."

She looked frightened again.

"Do we have to leave?"

"No. Not now."

I squeezed her hand.

"I just need to understand what documents we have."

She relaxed slightly.

I took out my phone and opened the notes application.

I wrote down what the staff had told me so I wouldn't forget anything.

The authorization had been canceled.

Daniel's information was associated with the change.

The hospital was reviewing the record.

Grace still needed to be assessed.

I read the list twice.

It looked simple when written down.

It didn't feel simple at all.

I thought about how easily I had accepted Daniel's explanations in the past.

He would say that a bill had been handled, that a form had been submitted, or that a decision had already been made.

I rarely asked to see the paperwork.

I had told myself that marriage required trust.

I still believed that trust mattered.

But trust was not supposed to mean that one person could make decisions affecting a child while the other parent remained unaware of what was happening.

I had confused the two.

A short time later, Daniel called again.

I answered because I wanted a clear explanation, not because I wanted another argument.

"Have you calmed down?" he asked.

I looked at the screen.

"I'm not the one who needs to calm down."

He made a frustrated sound.

"Rebecca, you're turning a paperwork issue into something it isn't."

"Then tell me what it is."

"I already told you. You don't have the whole story."

"You're right. I don't. That's why I'm asking you."

He was silent.

I waited.

Then he said that the matter was complicated and that we needed to discuss it privately.

I asked whether he had canceled Grace's authorization.

He said I was putting words in his mouth.

I asked him to answer the question.

He told me he would speak to me when I came home.

That was all.

No explanation.

No reassurance about Grace.

No question about whether she was feeling worse.

I ended the call.

For a moment, I stood with the phone pressed against my chest.

I had spent years believing that Daniel's confidence meant he had things under control.

But when I asked him a direct question about our daughter, he would not give me a direct answer.

That fact stayed with me.

I sat beside Grace and told her that I was going to remain with her while the hospital continued reviewing everything.

She nodded.

Then she leaned her head against my shoulder.

I rested my cheek against her hair.

I could not undo the decisions that had brought us there.

I could not know yet what the cancellation meant or why it had happened.

But I could stop letting uncertainty become an excuse to do nothing.

When the staff returned, I asked what the next step would be.

They explained that they were still reviewing the information and would update me when they had more clarity.

I thanked them and stayed beside Grace.

The hospital clock moved forward.

People came and went.

Some carried folders, others held sleeping children, and a few sat alone with their phones in their hands.

I watched them and wondered how many had arrived expecting a straightforward appointment, only to find themselves waiting for answers they had never thought to ask for.

Grace shifted in her chair.

"Mom?"

"Yes?"

"If they can't find the paperwork, will they still help me?"

I looked at her.

"I don't know exactly how they'll handle it, but I'm going to keep asking what can be done."

She nodded.

I held her hand.

For the first time that night, I understood that I couldn't promise her that everything would be easy.

I could promise her that I would stay.

And I could make sure she no longer had to carry the responsibility for keeping everyone else comfortable.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: I Went Back Through the Decisions I Had Let Daniel Make, Searching for the First Sign That I Should Have Asked More Questions

The next call came before I had put my phone away.
