I explained that the pain had been going on for several days and that Grace had begun refusing food because eating seemed to make her feel worse.

I didn't pretend to know what the symptoms meant.

I only knew they were not normal for my daughter.

The woman explained that I should bring Grace in to be assessed, especially if the pain worsened or she developed other concerning symptoms.

I thanked her and ended the call.

For a few seconds, I stood in the kitchen with my phone in my hand.

I had expected to feel relieved after making the decision.

Instead, I felt guilty.

I was guilty for waiting.

Guilty for letting Daniel dismiss her complaints.

Guilty because I couldn't remember the first time Grace had told me she was hurting, and I had no way of knowing how much time had passed before I began to take her seriously.

I went upstairs.

Grace was awake, lying on her side beneath the blanket.

"Sweetheart, we're going to have a doctor look at your stomach."

She turned toward me.

"Tonight?"

"Yes."

She was quiet for a moment.

Then she asked, "Does Dad know?"

I sat on the edge of the bed.

"Not yet."

Her eyes moved toward the doorway.

I could see her thinking about what would happen when he found out.

I hated that she had to think about that at all.

"You're not in trouble," I told her.

She nodded, but her face didn't change.

I helped her sit up and reached for the backpack she had brought downstairs that morning.

"Do you need anything from here?"

She shook her head.

I found her shoes and set them beside the bed.

Then I went to the bathroom to get her a hair tie.

When I returned, she was sitting exactly where I had left her, both hands pressed against her stomach.

I knelt in front of her.

"Can you stand?"

She tried.

Her face tightened, and she stopped halfway.

I caught her arm.

"All right. Take your time."

She breathed through the discomfort, then slowly got to her feet.

I helped her put on her shoes.

The whole thing took longer than it should have, but I didn't rush her.

For once, I wasn't worried about the clock.

I was worried about my child.

When we reached the stairs, Daniel appeared at the end of the hallway.

He was holding his tablet.

"Where are you going?"

I looked at him.

"Taking Grace to the hospital."

His expression changed.

Not dramatically.

Daniel was rarely dramatic when he was angry.

His face simply became still.

"What for?"

"She's been having pain in her stomach, and she can't eat normally."

He looked at Grace.

"Are you still doing this?"

She lowered her eyes.

I stepped between them without thinking.

"Don't talk to her like that."

Daniel looked back at me.

"Excuse me?"

"We're going to get her checked."

He set the tablet on the hallway table.

"You're overreacting."

"Maybe. But I'm not taking that chance."

The words came out before I could reconsider them.

I felt my heart beating hard, but I didn't take them back.

Daniel stared at me.

For a moment, I thought he might try to stop us.

Instead, he folded his arms.

"If you insist on turning every little complaint into an emergency, that's your decision."

I helped Grace down the stairs.

Neither of us answered him.

At the front door, I reached for the keys in my purse.

My hands were shaking enough that I dropped them once.

Grace bent to help me.

"Stay still," I told her gently. "I've got them."

I opened the door.

The evening air felt cooler than I expected.

I helped her into the passenger seat and fastened her seat belt. Then I walked around the car, climbed behind the wheel, and started the engine.

Before pulling away, I looked at her.

"Tell me if anything changes."

She nodded.

I drove carefully, keeping my eyes on the road and checking on her whenever we stopped at a light.

The hospital wasn't far, but the journey felt longer than it should have.

I kept remembering all the moments I had dismissed.

The untouched breakfast.

The way she had held her stomach.

The fear in her voice when she asked whether I would tell her father.

I had thought I was protecting her from an argument.

Now I wondered whether my silence had taught her that she needed to endure things alone.

At the hospital entrance, I parked and went around to help her out.

Grace moved slowly.

I kept one hand near her elbow as we walked inside.

The bright lights made her look even paler.

At the reception desk, I explained why we had come. A staff member asked us to wait while they gathered the necessary information.

I sat beside Grace.

She leaned forward, her arms wrapped around her middle.

I wanted to put my hand on her back, but I hesitated because I didn't want to make her uncomfortable.

Then she reached for my fingers.

I held them.

Neither of us spoke for a while.

Eventually, a member of staff called Grace's name.

I stood and helped her up.

We followed the staff member toward the assessment area, where they began asking questions about the pain, when it had started, and what made it better or worse.

I answered what I could.

Grace answered the rest.

She was quiet, but she didn't seem as frightened as she had at home.

Nobody accused her of making excuses.

Nobody told her to finish her dinner.

They listened.

That alone made me want to cry.

I kept my face composed while the questions continued.

Then a staff member began reviewing Grace's medical information.

At first, I paid little attention to the routine checks. I assumed they were confirming the details they needed before the doctor saw her.

The staff member looked at the screen.

Then she looked at me.

She asked me to confirm some of Grace's information.

I did.

She checked the screen again.

"One moment, please."

Her voice was professional, but something about the pause made my stomach tighten.

She stepped away to consult another member of staff.

I watched her speak quietly near the desk.

Grace squeezed my hand.

"Mom?"

I turned toward her.

"What is it, sweetheart?"

"Did I do something wrong?"

"No."

I answered immediately.

"No, you didn't."

I wanted her to believe that more than anything.

The staff member returned with another person.

They asked me to step aside briefly while Grace remained seated nearby.

I could still see my daughter, and I stayed close enough that she could reach me if she needed to.

The staff member explained that there was a problem with the information associated with Grace's care.

I asked what kind of problem.

She didn't give me a clear answer at first.

She said they needed to verify the records before they could explain everything.

I felt the room change around me.

The hospital had seemed like the one place where I could stop worrying about whether Daniel believed us.

Now I was being told that something was wrong with Grace's records.

I looked at the staff member.

"Is my daughter covered for the care she needs?"

The woman paused.

"We're checking that now."

I stared at her.

I had brought my daughter there because she was in pain.

I had expected questions, examinations, perhaps tests if the doctor thought they were necessary.

I had not expected anyone to hesitate over whether her care could proceed.

"What does that mean?" I asked.

The staff member glanced at the screen again.

"I need to confirm a few details before I can answer you."

I wanted to demand that she tell me everything immediately.

But I could see that she was trying to be careful, and I didn't want to mistake caution for indifference.

So I waited.

A few minutes later, she returned with an update.

She explained that Grace's file showed an unexpected change involving the authorization for her care.

I felt cold.

"An authorization from whom?"

The staff member said she needed to verify the details.

I looked back at Grace.

She was watching us from her chair, her backpack resting against her feet.

She looked small beneath the hospital lights.

I walked back to her and sat beside her.

"Everything is all right," I told her.

I didn't know whether that was true.

But I needed her to understand that I wasn't going to leave her alone while we figured it out.

She leaned against my arm.

I held her hand and looked toward the desk.

The staff member was still checking the records.

And for the first time that night, I began to understand that the problem might not be limited to Grace's pain.

PART 3 END

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: The Hospital Staff Found Something in My Daughter’s File That I Couldn’t Explain, and Every Question Led Me Back to Her Father

The person who answered the hospital phone asked me what was wrong.
