I'll call you when I know what's happening."

Robert stood near the unfinished floor, holding a toolbox.

"Don't worry about the job right now, Julian."

He glanced toward Noah.

"Just take care of your boy."

I thanked him.

Then I picked up the bicycle and carried it toward my truck.

The frame was lighter than I expected.

I had watched Noah ride it around our neighborhood countless times, usually with me following at a distance or calling out reminders to watch the driveway.

Seeing it dusty from three miles of Phoenix streets made it look different.

It was no longer just a bicycle.

It was proof of how far my son had been willing to go when he believed he had to reach me.

I secured it in the truck bed.

Then I opened the passenger door for Noah.

He climbed inside carefully.

Before I closed the door, I looked at him.

"Do you feel okay?"

"I'm okay, Dad."

His voice was still quiet.

I knew that answer didn't necessarily mean he was fine.

It meant he was ready to get home.

I closed the door and walked around to the driver's side.

The truck smelled of old upholstery, dust, and the sandwich I had left in a paper bag that morning.

Usually, I barely noticed those things.

That afternoon, every ordinary detail seemed strange because I couldn't stop thinking about my son riding alone beneath the same sun.

I started the engine.

For a few seconds, I sat with my hands on the steering wheel.

Then I turned toward him.

"Noah, I need you to tell me something."

He looked at me immediately.

I softened my voice.

"Is your sister still at home?"

He nodded.

That answer brought some relief, but not enough.

"Is there an adult with her?"

He hesitated.

I felt my grip tighten around the steering wheel.

"Noah?"

"I don't know, Dad."

I looked at him.

He was staring at his knees.

"What do you mean you don't know?"

He swallowed.

"I left before I could find out."

The words landed harder than I expected.

I had been so focused on the fact that he had ridden three miles to reach me that I hadn't fully considered what he had left behind.

I took a slow breath.

"All right. We'll find out."

I didn't want him to feel responsible for answering questions he couldn't answer.

I put the truck into gear and pulled away from the curb.

The road shimmered in the heat.

Traffic moved through the intersection, and a delivery van stopped ahead of us.

I kept my eyes on the road, but my attention remained divided between driving and the boy sitting beside me.

I had spent years driving these streets without thinking much about them.

Now I noticed every crossing, every turning vehicle, every place where a small bicycle might disappear beside a larger car.

I imagined Noah moving through those streets alone.

I pushed the thought away long enough to concentrate on driving.

"Can you tell me what made you leave home?"

He rubbed his thumb against the side of his hand.

"I was scared."

"I know, buddy."

"I didn't know what else to do."

I glanced at him.

That sentence told me more than I wanted to hear.

A seven-year-old shouldn't have to believe that riding three miles alone is his only choice.

I didn't say that to him.

Not yet.

Instead, I asked the question that mattered most.

"What happened to your sister?"

Noah lifted his head.

For a moment, he looked as though he was deciding whether to speak.

Then he took a breath.

"She was crying, Dad."

I slowed slightly as we approached a red light.

"Was she hurt?"

He shook his head.

"I don't think so."

"You don't think so?"

"I couldn't stay to see."

His voice broke on the last word.

I felt the urge to pull over, turn toward him, and tell him he didn't have to worry anymore.

But I couldn't honestly promise that.

We still didn't know what was happening at home.

I kept driving.

"What's her name, buddy?"

He looked at me as if the question surprised him.

"Lily."

Of course I knew his sister's name.

I had asked because I wanted to slow the conversation down and give him something familiar to hold on to.

"Lily," I repeated.

"All right. We're going to check on Lily."

He nodded.

The light turned green.

I drove through the intersection, thinking about how quickly an ordinary afternoon could change.

That morning, I had left home believing my biggest problem was the cost of a flooring job.

I had expected to spend the day measuring planks and watching adhesive dry.

I had expected to return home tired, with dust on my clothes and a calculation in my head about what we had earned.

I hadn't expected my son to arrive at my workplace looking as though the world had become too large for him.

I hadn't expected to discover that he had been frightened enough to leave home without an adult.

And I hadn't expected to feel so uncertain about what I should do next.

I glanced at him again.

His face was turned toward the window.

The buildings passed in bright, uneven flashes.

I reached across the space between us and rested my hand briefly on his shoulder.

"I'm here now."

He leaned slightly toward me.

"I know, Dad."

I wanted to believe those words meant his fear was fading.

But when he looked back toward the road, I saw the same urgency in his eyes that I had noticed at the worksite.

He was still thinking about his sister.

So was I.

And for the first time that afternoon, I understood that getting Noah safely to me had only been the beginning of what I needed to do.

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: My Son Kept Looking Toward Home, and I Finally Understood That Reaching Me Had Never Been the Only Thing He Wanted

The first thing I noticed when we stepped outside was how hot the pavement had become.
