9 – I Thought Listening Would Be Enough, Until I Realized My Son Needed More Than Comfort From the Father He Had Ridden Three Miles to Find

I used to think the hardest part of being a father was providing for your children.

I was wrong.

Providing mattered, of course.

The rent still had to be paid, the groceries still had to be bought, and the bills didn't disappear because somebody in your family was having a difficult day.

But money couldn't tell me what Noah had been thinking when he climbed onto that red bicycle.

It couldn't explain why a seven-year-old had decided that riding three miles through Phoenix was the thing he needed to do.

And it couldn't tell me what he expected to find when he finally reached me.

I sat beside him, trying not to make him feel as though every movement needed an explanation.

The worksite smelled of warm concrete and flooring adhesive.

Robert had put most of the tools away, leaving the unfinished section of floor alone.

The fan continued to turn.

I could hear the blades moving, but the sound seemed far away.

My attention remained on my son.

He had begun to look less exhausted, though he still held himself stiffly.

I wondered whether he was waiting for me to decide what happened next.

That was something children did.

They watched the adults around them and tried to understand the rules from their faces.

A father might say everything was fine, but if his hands were shaking or his voice had changed, a child noticed.

I didn't want Noah to have to guess what I was feeling.

I was worried.

I was frightened by the thought of him traveling alone in that heat.

I was also grateful that he had reached me.

All those feelings existed together.

I didn't need to hide them behind anger.

I rested my hand on the chair beside him.

"You're not going to have to figure this out alone."

He looked at me.

I couldn't tell whether he believed me completely, but he seemed willing to listen.

That was enough for me to keep going.

I asked him what he needed from me right then.

He didn't answer immediately.

I waited.

I had learned something that afternoon about the difference between silence and refusal.

Sometimes silence meant a person wasn't ready.

Sometimes it meant they were looking for words that didn't seem to fit.

I had spent too many years assuming that the first answer was always the most useful one.

Now I wanted to give Noah time to find his own.

He shifted his feet against the floor.

His loose shoelace brushed the concrete.

I had tied it earlier, but the knot was already beginning to come undone.

I noticed it and almost reached down to fix it again.

Then I stopped.

It wasn't important.

Not compared with what he was trying to tell me.

I let him speak when he was ready.

The afternoon light moved farther across the doorway.

A car passed outside, and the sound of its tires faded into the distance.

Noah glanced toward the street.

I wondered whether the sight of passing cars brought back any part of his ride.

I didn't ask him to explain that glance.

Instead, I asked whether he felt safe sitting there with me.

He nodded.

I felt a small measure of relief.

I had no way to take back the distance he had traveled.

I couldn't erase the heat or the uncertainty that had accompanied him.

But I could make the next few minutes different from the ones before he arrived.

I could stop rushing.

I could stop thinking about the unfinished job.

I could make sure he didn't have to compete with a bucket of adhesive for my attention.

Looking back, that last thought makes me ashamed.

No child should have to compete with a job for his father's attention.

I had never deliberately told Noah that work mattered more than he did.

But children don't learn everything from what adults say.

They learn from what we do when two things demand our attention at once.

That afternoon, I wanted my actions to tell him the truth.

He mattered.

I mattered less than the problem he had brought to me.

And the problem mattered enough for me to stay until I understood it.

I looked toward Robert.

He was checking the tools near the back wall.

I knew he would be able to manage the remaining work, at least for a while.

I was grateful for that too.

I turned back to Noah.

"Whenever you're ready, I'm listening."

He took a breath.

Then he began speaking again.

I listened without interrupting.

Some things were still unclear to me.

I didn't pretend otherwise.

I asked only what I needed to understand, and I let him finish his answers.

There was no reason to make the conversation harder than it already was.

When he stopped, I didn't immediately speak.

I wanted to be sure he had finished.

He looked at me, waiting.

I nodded slowly.

"All right, buddy."

It was a simple answer.

It wasn't a solution.

But it told him that I had heard him and that I wasn't going to dismiss what he had said.

I stood and looked toward the bicycle.

The red frame rested against the wall, dusty and slightly crooked.

I could still picture Noah arriving at the curb, his feet struggling to keep the bicycle steady.

I could still remember the way his chest had risen and fallen.

At the time, I had thought the most important question was why he had come.

Now I understood that I also needed to ask what he had been carrying before he got there.

That was where the real work began.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: The Unfinished Floor Could Wait, but I Couldn’t Ignore the
