I told him.

He gave a small nod.

I wanted that to be enough.

It wasn't.

I still needed to understand what had happened and why he had thought coming to my worksite was necessary.

I asked him to tell me what he remembered, starting wherever he wanted.

He spoke slowly.

I listened.

I didn't correct him when he paused or repeated himself.

The details mattered, but so did the way he was trying to give them to me.

Outside, the sun continued to beat down on the red bicycle.

I could see it through the doorway whenever I turned my head.

It seemed impossible that something so ordinary could have carried my son into such a difficult afternoon.

Robert came over after a while.

He stood beside the doorway and looked at the unfinished floor.

"We can stop for now," he said.

I glanced at the adhesive.

The edges were already beginning to change as the material cured.

Stopping would cost us something.

I knew that.

But I also knew I wasn't going to send Noah away simply because a job had become inconvenient.

"Let the floor wait," I told him.

Robert looked at me for a second.

Then he nodded.

He had worked with me long enough to understand that I wasn't asking for permission.

He began putting the tools in order.

I turned back to Noah.

I asked whether he needed anything.

He shook his head.

Then he looked toward the bicycle.

I followed his gaze.

The front wheel was still angled toward the road.

I walked outside, straightened the handlebars, and brought the bicycle inside far enough that it wouldn't be left alone by the curb.

I didn't want Noah worrying about it.

When I returned, he was watching me.

I sat down again.

"That's taken care of."

He looked at the floor.

I could see him thinking.

I wanted to tell him that the bicycle ride had been dangerous.

I wanted to explain what could have happened along the way.

But I could also see how hard he had worked to get to me.

I didn't want my first response to be a lecture.

There would be time to talk about safety when I knew he had understood that I was taking him seriously.

For now, I needed to hear him.

I asked another question.

He answered.

Then I asked one more.

Little by little, I began to understand that he hadn't come because he wanted to escape responsibility or because he thought riding across town would be an adventure.

He had come because something had made him believe he needed his father.

That difference mattered.

I had spent years telling myself that providing for my family was the most important thing I could do.

I had measured that responsibility in hours worked and bills paid.

I had taken pride in coming home tired because it meant I hadn't wasted the day.

But there was another part of being a father that couldn't be measured on a receipt.

Being available.

Listening before deciding.

Knowing when a child needed reassurance and when he needed an adult to act.

I wasn't proud of how long it had taken me to understand that.

Noah shifted on the chair.

I noticed the dust on his shoes.

One lace had come loose.

I bent down and tied it for him.

He watched my hands.

It was a small thing.

Still, I wished I had done more small things like that without needing a frightening afternoon to remind me.

When I finished, I sat back.

"All right," I said gently. "Let's work out what we need to do next."

For the first time since he had arrived, Noah seemed to settle a little.

Not completely.

But enough for me to see that he was waiting for me to lead.

I took a breath.

I had stopped thinking about the floor.

I had stopped thinking about the lost adhesive.

My attention was where it should have been from the beginning.

On my son.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: Robert Put Away His Tools While I Stayed Beside Noah, Realizing That a Father’s First Job Was Not Always the One Paying Him

I wanted to believe I could fix everything once I understood it.
