Let me understand what's going on."

He nodded and returned to the work area.

The trowel lay on the floor beside the adhesive bucket.

A thin layer of material had begun to set along the edge of the unfinished section.

Earlier, I would have worried about how much we might lose.

Now I could barely bring myself to look at it.

I focused on Noah.

I asked him a few simple questions, giving him time to answer each one.

I didn't want to put words in his mouth.

I didn't want him agreeing with me simply because I was his father.

What mattered was what he knew and what he needed me to understand.

As he spoke, I found myself looking at the red bicycle through the doorway.

Three miles.

I kept returning to that distance.

It was easy to say three miles when looking at a map.

It was different to imagine a seven-year-old covering it alone in the heat.

I thought about the turns he might have taken.

I thought about how small he must have looked beside passing vehicles.

I thought about how he had reached the worksite and stopped his bicycle without knowing what I would say.

He might have expected me to be angry.

He might have expected me to tell him he had done something dangerous.

He might even have expected me to send him straight home.

Instead, I was trying to understand what had made him believe he couldn't wait.

That was the question I needed answered.

Not because I wanted to judge him.

Because I needed to know what had happened before he arrived.

I leaned forward.

"Noah, I want you to tell me what you think I need to know first."

He looked at me.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he began again.

I listened closely.

I could hear the difference between his first few words and the ones that followed.

At first, he seemed to be testing whether he could say what he had come to say.

Then, little by little, he became more direct.

I didn't interrupt.

The room seemed quieter than before, even though the shop fan was still running outside.

I could hear Robert moving tools at the far end of the floor.

I could hear the faint scrape of a bucket being dragged across concrete.

And I could hear my son's voice.

That was all I wanted to hear.

When he paused, I let the silence remain.

I didn't fill it with guesses.

I didn't tell him what I thought he was about to say.

I waited for him to decide what came next.

Looking back, I can see how much I was trying to control that moment.

I wanted the facts.

I wanted a clear explanation.

I wanted something I could take apart and solve, the way I would a flooring problem.

But my son wasn't a job site.

He wasn't a damaged plank that could be removed and replaced.

He was a frightened child who had ridden a bicycle across the city because something mattered enough to make him leave the safety he knew.

I needed to meet him where he was.

So I stayed beside him.

I kept my voice low.

I let him speak at his own pace.

And when he looked up at me again, I made sure he saw that I was listening.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: I Had Always Thought My Job Was to Bring Money Home, Until My Son’s Journey Forced Me to Face What Being a Father Required

I couldn't stop looking at Noah's bicycle.
