17 – The Apartment Keys

The apartment was smaller than David and Sarah had hoped for, but I could tell from their faces that they liked it.

It was on the second floor of a brick building with narrow hallways and a little balcony overlooking a parking lot.

The kitchen had barely enough room for two people to stand together.

The living room window faced east, which meant the morning sun would come through before most of the neighborhood woke up.

I noticed that first.

I had always loved a room that greeted the day with sunlight.

David stood near the window, looking outside.

Sarah opened the cabinet beneath the sink and checked the plumbing.

Neither of them spoke for a moment.

Then David turned toward me.

“What do you think, Mom?”

I looked around again.

The walls needed fresh paint, and the carpet had a dark stain near the entrance.

The refrigerator was old.

But the place was clean, and the rent was within the amount they had discussed.

“I think you could make a home here,” I said.

Sarah smiled.

“I was thinking the same thing.”

We walked through the bedrooms.

There were two, though the second was small enough that a full-size bed would leave little room for anything else.

David said he could use it as an office until they decided what they needed.

Sarah measured the larger bedroom with the steps she had learned to take when we first started talking about boundaries.

I watched her carefully.

Not because I expected her to do something wrong.

I simply knew how much could be hidden inside an ordinary moment.

She had once stood in my bedroom and told me that I could sleep upstairs while she and David took over my room.

Now she was measuring a room that belonged to her and David.

The difference was small on the surface.

To me, it meant everything.

“This would fit our bed,” she said.

David stood beside her.

“And we could put the dresser against that wall.”

I stayed near the doorway.

I did not offer to buy furniture.

I did not volunteer to pay their deposit.

I did not start planning how I could make the apartment easier for them.

Those offers would have come naturally to me a few months earlier.

I would have treated their happiness as a responsibility that belonged to me.

This time, I let them imagine their own life.

The landlord arrived with a folder and explained the application process.

David listened closely, asking about the lease length, the security deposit, and the rules for repairs.

Sarah asked about the laundry room and whether pets were allowed.

I stood back and let them handle the questions.

When the landlord left, David looked at me.

“I think we can do this.”

“You sound more certain than you did last week.”

He laughed quietly.

“Last week, I was still trying to figure out how to fix everything at once.”

“And now?”

“Now I know I have to take things one at a time.”

I nodded.

It was a simple answer.

Sometimes the simplest answers are the ones that tell you a person has finally started listening.

We returned to my house that afternoon.

Sarah put the apartment brochure on the kitchen table.

I was making tea when she came into the kitchen and stood beside me.

“I want to ask you something,” she said.

“Go ahead.”

“When we move out, would you be comfortable if we invited you over for dinner?”

I turned off the kettle.

The question caught me by surprise.

Not because I thought she would never invite me.

Because I understood what she was really asking.

She wanted to know whether our relationship could become something other than a struggle over space.

“Of course,” I said.

“I don't want you to think that moving out means we don't want you around.”

“I won't think that.”

She looked down at her hands.

“I know I made you feel that way before.”

I waited.

“I acted like your house was something we could rearrange because it was convenient for us.”

Her voice was quiet.

“I shouldn't have done that.”

“No,” I said. “You shouldn't have.”

She nodded without arguing.

There had been a time when I would have rushed to soften my answer.

I would have told her not to worry, that everything was fine, that families made mistakes.

But everything had not been fine.

And pretending otherwise would not have helped either of us.

Sarah leaned against the counter.

“I want us to be able to visit without feeling like we're fighting over something.”

“That is what I want, too.”

She smiled a little.

Then she went back to the living room, where David was checking the numbers on his phone.

I poured my tea and carried it to the table.

The apartment brochure lay beside the fruit bowl.

For the first time, it did not look like a reminder of a problem.

It looked like the beginning of a solution.

Click here to continue reading: PART 18: The Things I
