Just until we've had a chance to settle into the new schedule."

I had expected some version of that question.

I took a moment before answering.

"We can discuss the timing once you know your actual income and expenses."

He seemed relieved.

"So you're open to it?"

"I'm open to discussing what makes sense. I'm not promising an indefinite stay."

His smile faded slightly.

"Right."

I reached for the cup on the table.

"David, I want you to succeed. I want you to have enough money saved that you don't move into another place only to find yourself struggling again."

He nodded.

"But I also need to feel comfortable in my own home. We need to keep working toward an arrangement that works for everyone."

He looked down at his hands.

"I understand."

I hoped he did.

I didn't want his new job to become another reason for us to postpone a necessary conversation.

A good opportunity could make things easier.

It could not solve every problem by itself.

We still needed to agree on how long he and Sarah would stay.

We still needed to respect the guest room arrangement.

And we still needed to remember that my willingness to help them was a choice, not an obligation.

I wasn't going to let those things disappear simply because the immediate financial pressure had eased.

The next morning, David left early to complete the paperwork for his new job.

Sarah and I were alone in the kitchen.

She was making coffee when she asked whether I was happy about the news.

"Very happy."

She smiled.

"David has been worried for a long time."

"I know."

She sat at the table.

"I think having work will help him feel more like himself."

I nodded.

"I think so, too."

She looked into her cup.

"We've both been embarrassed about needing help."

I sat across from her.

"You don't need to be embarrassed about having a difficult period."

She gave a small laugh.

"That sounds easier when you say it."

I smiled.

"Sometimes it's easier to believe something when another person says it."

She looked at me for a moment.

Then she spoke more quietly.

"I think that's part of why I wanted the bigger bedroom."

I didn't answer immediately.

She continued.

"I wanted things to feel normal. I thought if we had more space, if we could arrange things the way we wanted, I wouldn't feel like we were living in someone else's house."

I listened carefully.

I could understand the feeling.

But I also understood that she had tried to solve it by asking me to give up something that was not hers to claim.

"I understand wanting a place where you feel settled," I said. "But the answer couldn't be to make me feel like a guest in my own home."

She looked down.

"I know that now."

I hoped she did.

For the first time, I felt that she was explaining her behavior without asking me to excuse it.

That was a meaningful difference.

"I don't want you to feel unwelcome here," I told her. "I want you to have a chance to get back on your feet."

She nodded.

"But while you're here, we have to respect the fact that this is my home, too."

"I understand."

We sat quietly for a moment.

Then Sarah asked whether I wanted another cup of coffee.

I smiled.

"Yes, please."

She took my mug and filled it.

It was a small gesture.

It did not erase what had happened.

But it made the kitchen feel a little warmer.

Over the next few days, David prepared for his first day at work.

He organized his documents, checked the route, and made sure he had the clothes he needed.

I helped him find an old folder he had misplaced.

Sarah made a list of expenses they expected to have once his paycheck began arriving.

They were beginning to plan more carefully.

I encouraged them when they asked for my opinion.

I also let them make their own decisions.

I had learned that helping someone did not require me to manage every detail of their life.

On Sunday evening, David sat with me in the living room.

He looked toward the hallway leading to the stairs.

"Mom, I want to thank you for letting us stay here."

I put my book down.

"You're welcome."

"I know we haven't always made it easy."

I looked at him.

"No, you haven't."

He laughed softly, though I could tell he was nervous.

"I'm trying to be honest."

"I appreciate that."

He took a breath.

"I don't want you to think that because we're getting back on our feet, I've forgotten what you did for us."

I felt a lump in my throat.

"I don't think that."

He looked at me.

"But I do need you to remember that I can't make every decision for you."

He nodded.

"I know."

"I can help you think through things. I can offer advice. I can give you a place to stay while you work toward your next step."

I paused.

"But you and Sarah have to decide what kind of life you want to build together."

He looked down.

"You're right."

"And I have to be able to live my own life without feeling that I have to give up my comfort to keep everyone happy."

He nodded again.

This time, he didn't look as though he wanted the conversation to end.

"I understand that better now."

I reached over and touched his arm.

"I hope so."

We sat together for a while.

We talked about his first day at work and the possibility of finding an apartment closer to his commute.

We talked about the neighborhood and the things he remembered from growing up.

It was an ordinary conversation.

I was grateful for it.

When he went upstairs, I remained in the living room.

My husband's chair stood beside the window.

I sat in it and looked around the room.

For weeks, I had worried that my relationship with David might never recover from that morning in the kitchen.

Now I could see that something was changing.

Not everything.

Not all at once.

But enough for me to feel hopeful.

I knew that the real test would come when David became busy with work, when money started coming in, and when he and Sarah had to make decisions about their future.

It was easy to be grateful when someone had just helped you.

It was harder to maintain respect when life became comfortable again.

I hoped they would remember what they had learned.

I also knew that I would have to remember my own lessons.

I could not make my boundaries dependent on whether David was struggling.

I had a right to them when he was unemployed.

I had a right to them when he was earning money.

And I would still have a right to them when he eventually moved out.

My home was not a reward I could give or take away according to his success.

It was my home.

That truth had not changed.

Before bed, I checked the front door and turned off the kitchen light.

I walked past the guest room.

Their bags were still beside the wall.

The bed was neatly made.

I paused for a moment.

Soon, that room might be empty again.

I imagined stripping the sheets, opening the window, and putting everything back the way it had been before they arrived.

I didn't feel eager to see them leave.

I felt ready for the arrangement to reach its natural end.

There was a difference.

I wanted David and Sarah to have a place of their own.

I wanted them to feel proud of what they could build together.

And I wanted to return to the quiet life I had worked so hard to create.

Those wishes could exist together.

I went into my bedroom and placed my keys on the bedside table.

Then I looked at my husband's photograph.

"I think we're going to be all right," I whispered.

I wasn't sure whether I meant David and me, the family, or myself.

Perhaps I meant all three.

I turned off the lamp and settled beneath the covers.

The future still held questions.

But for the first time in a long while, I was no longer afraid that answering those questions would require me to give up who I was.

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: As My Son Began Building His Life Again, I Realized the Best Help I Could Give Him Was to Let Him Stand on His Own

David received the call on a Thursday afternoon.
