Instead, I made things worse with you."

I looked at him.

"Yes, you did."

He nodded.

"I know."

The kitchen was quiet.

I could hear a car moving along the street outside.

David rested his hands on the table.

"I want you to trust me again."

I felt a familiar tenderness toward him.

He was still my son.

I still wanted him to succeed.

But I had learned that affection alone could not rebuild trust.

"David, I want that, too."

He looked relieved.

"But trust isn't something we can settle in one conversation," I continued. "It comes from what we do after the conversation ends."

He nodded slowly.

"I understand."

"I hope so. Because I don't want us to keep having the same argument in different ways."

He looked down at his hands.

"Neither do I."

I took a breath.

"When you came here, I trusted that we understood one another. I thought you knew that the guest room was what I was offering."

"I did."

"Then when Sarah asked me to leave my bedroom, I expected you to say that wasn't what we'd agreed to."

He closed his eyes briefly.

"I should have."

I let the silence settle between us.

I didn't need to remind him of every hurtful word.

He had finally acknowledged the important part.

"What matters now," I said, "is that we keep being honest. If you need something, ask me. If I say no, I need you to respect that answer. And if we disagree, we talk about it without making the other person feel guilty for having a different opinion."

He looked at me.

"That sounds fair."

"It is fair."

He nodded.

Then he asked whether I would be willing to help him prepare for the job conversation.

I smiled.

"Of course."

We spent the next half hour discussing the position.

He told me what the employer had asked and what he thought they would want to know.

I suggested that he prepare a few examples of work he had done well.

I reminded him to ask questions about the hours and expectations.

He listened and wrote notes on his phone.

It was a familiar kind of conversation.

I had helped him prepare for interviews when he was younger.

Back then, I had sat across from him at the dining table while he practiced answering questions.

He had been nervous and impatient.

I had told him that confidence came from preparation, not from pretending you weren't afraid.

I repeated that advice now.

He laughed.

"You always say that."

"Because it's still true."

When we finished, he thanked me.

Then he went upstairs to review his notes.

I remained at the table.

I was proud of him.

I was also careful not to let that pride become a reason to ignore the things we still needed to work out.

A promising job was good news.

It was not a guarantee.

And even if he found stable work, we still needed to maintain the boundaries we had discussed.

I wanted our relationship to improve because we were treating each other better, not because one problem had temporarily become less urgent.

That evening, Sarah came into the kitchen while I was putting away groceries.

She noticed the folder of household papers on the counter.

"Do you keep all your bills in there?"

"Most of them."

She opened the refrigerator and put away a carton of milk.

"I should probably do something like that."

"It makes things easier when you need to find something."

She nodded.

"I've been trying to organize our paperwork."

I smiled.

"That's a good idea."

She closed the refrigerator.

Then she looked at me.

"David told me about the job."

"I'm glad he has another conversation scheduled."

She nodded.

"We're hoping it works out."

"I hope so, too."

For a moment, I thought she might leave.

Instead, she leaned against the counter.

"I know I've made things uncomfortable here."

I put down the bag of groceries.

She looked nervous.

"I don't always handle stress very well."

I listened.

"I get worried about money, and then I start thinking about everything that could go wrong."

I understood that feeling more than she probably realized.

But I also knew that being worried did not excuse treating another person badly.

"I'm sorry things have been difficult," I said. "I don't want you to feel that you can't talk about your concerns."

She nodded.

"I know."

"But I need you to remember that I have concerns, too. I need to be able to talk about them without feeling as though I'm being selfish."

She looked down.

"I understand."

I hoped she did.

I wasn't expecting her to become a different person overnight.

I simply wanted us to be able to disagree without turning every disagreement into a question of loyalty.

Sarah picked up the empty grocery bag and folded it.

"I'll try to do better."

"That's all any of us can do."

She smiled faintly and carried the bag toward the pantry.

I returned to putting away the groceries.

The conversation had been short, but it felt meaningful.

I was beginning to understand that people sometimes needed to hear the same boundary more than once before they truly accepted it.

That didn't mean I had to keep arguing.

It meant I had to remain consistent.

I could be warm.

I could be patient.

I could listen to their worries.

But I could not make my own comfort dependent on whether they were pleased with every decision I made.

Later that night, David told me the date of his next job conversation.

I wished him luck.

He thanked me and went upstairs.

I stood in the hallway for a moment after he left.

The house had become a little easier to share.

There were still awkward silences.

There were still questions about money and how long the arrangement would last.

But we were starting to discuss those things directly.

I no longer felt that I had to choose between being a loving mother and being a woman who expected respect.

I could be both.

Before going to bed, I placed my keys on the small table near the bedroom door.

I had kept them in the same place for years.

It was a simple habit, but I liked knowing where they were.

My home had many such habits.

The keys by the door.

The bills in their folder.

The photograph beside the lamp.

The old chair near the living room window.

Those details were part of my life.

I didn't need to defend every one of them.

I only needed to remember that I was allowed to decide what belonged in my home and what did not.

I turned off the light.

I hoped David's job opportunity would work out.

I hoped Sarah would continue to speak honestly with me.

And I hoped that, when the time came for them to move into a place of their own, we would be able to look back on these weeks as a difficult period that taught us something useful.

I wasn't ready to assume that would happen.

But I was ready to keep doing my part.

Trust was not a promise made at a kitchen table.

It was the next morning's behavior.

It was the way someone responded when they heard no.

It was whether they kept their word when doing so became inconvenient.

And it was whether they could admit a mistake without making someone else responsible for it.

I had finally explained what I needed.

Now I had to give David and Sarah the chance to show me what they had learned.

Click here to continue reading: PART 15: The Day David Received His Job Offer, I Was Happy for Him, but I Reminded Him That Success Would Not Change the Need for Respect

Two days later, David came home with a different expression on his face.
