But if you save every dollar you have and then something breaks, you'll have to start over."

He looked at the notebook again.

I remembered the years when my husband and I had tried to save for a new appliance while dealing with an unexpected car repair.

We had learned that life rarely waited until the budget was convenient.

I explained how we used to divide our money into necessities, savings, and the expenses that could wait.

David listened.

He asked a few questions.

I answered them as best I could.

Then he tapped one of the figures with his finger.

"What if we can't save enough by the time we planned?"

I looked at him.

"Then we'll need to discuss what changed and what options you have."

"Would you let us stay longer?"

The question was reasonable.

It was the way he asked it that made me pause.

He sounded as though he wanted a promise before he had finished making the plan.

I folded my hands on the table.

"David, I can't promise an unlimited extension before we know what's happening."

He frowned.

"I'm not asking you to let us stay forever."

"I know."

"Then why can't you just say we'll work it out?"

I took a slow breath.

"Because working it out means being honest about the situation when the time comes. It doesn't mean agreeing to something now just so nobody has to worry."

He closed the notebook.

I could see his frustration returning.

For a moment, I feared we were about to repeat the same argument in a different form.

Then I reminded myself that I didn't have to respond to his frustration with my own.

"I'm not trying to make your life harder," I said. "I'm trying to make sure we all understand the arrangement."

He stared at the table.

"I know."

I waited.

He rubbed his forehead.

"It's just difficult not knowing what happens if things don't go according to plan."

I felt sympathy for him.

I understood that uncertainty was frightening.

But I was living with uncertainty, too.

I didn't know how long the arrangement would last.

I didn't know whether David would find stable work quickly.

I didn't know whether Sarah would feel comfortable living in my house for another month or another three.

The difference was that I had not asked them to solve those uncertainties for me.

I had simply asked them to take responsibility for their part.

"Nobody can promise that everything will work out exactly as planned," I told him. "But you can make decisions that give you a better chance."

He nodded slowly.

"Okay."

I opened the notebook again.

"Let's see whether there's anything you can adjust without making your lives miserable."

That made him smile.

We reviewed the figures once more.

We found a few expenses they could reduce.

We also agreed that he would follow up on the job opportunity and continue looking for other work.

It wasn't a perfect budget.

It was a starting point.

When we finished, David closed the notebook and thanked me.

I stood to put the kettle on.

As I reached for my mug, he spoke again.

"Mom, I hope you know we appreciate what you're doing."

I turned toward him.

"I hope so, too."

He looked uncomfortable.

"I don't always say it the right way."

I gave him a small smile.

"Then keep trying."

He laughed quietly.

I did, too.

For a few minutes, the tension disappeared.

I was glad.

I didn't expect every conversation to be difficult just because we had struggled through one.

That evening, I prepared dinner.

Sarah helped me set the table.

She asked whether I needed anything from the pantry, and I showed her where I kept the extra napkins.

We spoke about ordinary things.

She told me about an apartment she had seen online.

The rent was high, but the place was close to a bus route.

I asked whether she and David had calculated the cost of transportation against the higher rent.

She said they had started looking at that.

I encouraged her to compare the total costs rather than judging a place by the rent alone.

She nodded.

"I hadn't thought about it that way before."

"Sometimes the cheaper option isn't actually cheaper."

She smiled faintly.

"My mother used to say that."

I smiled back.

"Then she was a sensible woman."

For the first time in several days, Sarah laughed with me without looking as though she was waiting for the conversation to become uncomfortable.

It was a small change.

I welcomed it.

After dinner, I sat in the living room and read.

David and Sarah went upstairs to look through apartment listings together.

I could hear them discussing prices and locations.

I didn't listen closely.

They needed room to make their own decisions.

I was glad they were taking the search seriously.

Still, I understood that looking at apartments was easier than actually moving into one.

There would be deposits to pay.

There would be furniture to arrange, bills to transfer, and practical decisions they had not yet considered.

I hoped they would find something suitable.

I also hoped they would understand that my willingness to help them now did not erase the importance of having a future plan.

Later, David came downstairs to get a glass of water.

He stopped beside the living room doorway.

"Mom?"

I looked up.

"Yes?"

"Would you mind looking over our budget again tomorrow? Just to make sure we haven't missed anything."

I closed my book.

"Of course."

"Thanks."

He went into the kitchen.

I watched him for a moment before returning to my reading.

I was beginning to see a difference in the way he approached me.

At first, he had treated my questions as criticism.

Now he was starting to ask for my opinion before making decisions.

That didn't mean everything was fixed.

It meant he was learning that a boundary could exist alongside support.

I could help him think through his options without taking responsibility for his choices.

I could listen without agreeing to every request.

And I could offer advice without making him feel that he had to surrender his independence.

Those were things I wished we had understood from the beginning.

But I couldn't change the beginning.

I could only decide what kind of relationship we would try to build from here.

Before going to bed, I checked the kitchen one last time.

The mugs were clean.

The counter was clear.

The notebook was still on the table, with the revised figures written in David's handwriting.

I put it in the drawer beside the telephone so it wouldn't get covered by other papers.

Then I went upstairs.

My bedroom was quiet.

I looked at the photograph beside the lamp and thought about the conversation I had shared with David that afternoon.

We had disagreed.

We had become frustrated.

But we had stayed at the table and worked through the problem.

That mattered more than a perfect conversation would have.

I turned off the light.

I knew there would be more decisions to make.

I knew David and Sarah might need to adjust their plans.

But I no longer believed that every difficult discussion meant our relationship was falling apart.

Sometimes a difficult discussion was simply a necessary part of learning how to live together.

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: When David Asked Me to Trust Him Again, I Told Him Trust Was Built Through Small Decisions, Not Promises Made at the Kitchen Table

The following week began quietly.
