I asked.

He shook his head.

"I think I've got it."

I smiled and sat at the table.

He brought over a plate a few minutes later.

The eggs were slightly overcooked, and one piece of toast had a dark edge.

I ate everything.

It was good enough.

More than that, it was thoughtful.

We talked while we ate.

David asked about the plants outside.

I told him which ones needed more sunlight and which ones I had been trying to keep alive for years.

He laughed when I told him about a small plant I had nearly killed by watering it too often.

I hadn't realized how much I missed laughing with him.

Not every moment between us needed to become a lesson.

Not every conversation needed to address the argument.

We could still share ordinary things.

We could still enjoy one another's company.

And we could do those things without pretending that the difficult parts of our relationship had disappeared.

After breakfast, David washed the dishes.

I dried them and put them away.

When we finished, he turned toward me.

"Mom, can I ask you something?"

"Of course."

He looked toward the hallway.

"Do you think things can go back to normal?"

I set the dish towel on the counter.

"What do you mean by normal?"

He thought about that.

"I mean, between us."

I looked at him carefully.

"I think we can have a good relationship again."

He seemed relieved.

"But I don't think we should pretend that nothing happened."

His expression became more serious.

"I don't want to do that."

"Then we don't have to."

He nodded.

For a moment, we stood quietly in the kitchen.

Then he said, "I really am sorry about what I said that morning."

I felt the same ache in my chest that I had felt during our conversation the day before.

This time, it was mixed with relief.

"I believe you."

He looked down.

"I should have stood up for what was right."

I reached for his hand.

"You should have."

He looked at me.

I squeezed his fingers gently.

"But I'm glad we're talking about it now."

He nodded.

I could see that he was struggling to find the right words.

I didn't make him search for them.

"David, I love you. That hasn't changed."

He looked up.

"But loving you doesn't mean I have to agree to everything you want. And it doesn't mean you have to agree to everything Sarah wants."

He gave a small, embarrassed smile.

"I know."

"I hope you do."

He laughed softly.

"I think I'm starting to."

We stood there for another moment.

Then he hugged me.

It wasn't the kind of hug he had given me when he first arrived.

That one had been full of relief and gratitude.

This one felt different.

It felt as though he was acknowledging something he had nearly forgotten.

I hugged him back.

I didn't tell him everything was forgiven.

I didn't need to.

We were already taking the first steps toward repairing what had happened.

Later that morning, Sarah came downstairs.

David was sitting at the kitchen table with the notebook open in front of him.

She glanced at it.

"Are you looking at the budget again?"

"Just checking a few things."

She poured herself coffee.

I was preparing a small list of groceries for the coming week.

For a few minutes, we went about our tasks without speaking.

Then Sarah looked at me.

"Kimberly, can I ask you something?"

I put down my pen.

"Yes."

She hesitated.

"Are you still upset with me?"

I considered the question.

I didn't want to tell her that I was completely fine when I wasn't.

I also didn't want to use the opportunity to make her feel worse.

"I'm disappointed about what happened," I said. "But I don't want to spend the rest of our time together being angry."

She looked down at her cup.

"I was stressed."

"I understand that."

"I shouldn't have told you to move out of your bedroom."

I remained quiet.

She took a breath.

"I'm sorry."

The apology was brief.

Her voice was low, and she didn't look entirely comfortable saying it.

But she had said it.

I felt something inside me loosen.

"Thank you for apologizing," I said.

She nodded.

I didn't tell her that everything was suddenly fine.

I didn't ask her to explain why she had made the demand.

I had already spent enough time trying to understand her reasons.

What mattered now was whether we could treat one another differently.

"I'm happy to help you both while you get back on your feet," I continued. "I want you to have a chance to save money and find a place you can afford."

Sarah looked at me.

"I know."

"But I need you to remember that this is my home. I need to be comfortable here, too."

She nodded slowly.

"I understand."

I hoped she meant it.

Only time would tell.

I picked up my pen again.

The conversation was over, and I didn't feel the need to keep it going.

We had both said what needed to be said.

That afternoon, I worked on the loose hinge beneath the kitchen sink.

David offered to hold the cabinet door while I tightened the screws.

Together, we finished the repair in less than fifteen minutes.

It was a small job.

But when I closed the cabinet and saw that the door hung straight, I felt pleased.

David wiped his hands on a paper towel.

"Anything else broken around here?"

I laughed.

"Don't tempt me. I can find plenty."

He smiled.

For a while, we talked about the house.

I told him which repairs I had postponed and which ones I planned to do before winter.

He offered to help with a few of them.

I accepted some offers and declined others.

It felt natural.

I wasn't asking him to earn the right to stay by becoming my handyman.

He wasn't trying to prove that he deserved to be there.

We were simply two people sharing a home for a time, each doing what we could.

That evening, I sat in the living room with a book.

David and Sarah were upstairs, discussing apartments they had found online.

I could hear their voices occasionally, but I didn't try to follow the conversation.

They had their own decisions to make.

I had mine.

I was glad they were looking for a place of their own.

I was also glad they could remain here while they worked toward that goal.

Both things could be true.

For days, I had worried that standing my ground would damage my relationship with my son permanently.

I had imagined that he might resent me for refusing to give up my bedroom.

I had feared that Sarah might never forgive me for saying no.

But I was beginning to see that a boundary did not have to be the end of a relationship.

Sometimes it was the only way to make a relationship honest again.

I could welcome David into my home without surrendering my independence.

I could forgive him without pretending he had done nothing wrong.

I could accept Sarah's apology without expecting us to become close overnight.

And I could continue living my life without waiting for either of them to approve of every decision I made.

When I went upstairs that night, I stopped at my bedroom door.

The familiar furniture stood where it had always stood.

The curtains hung beside the window.

The dresser held the small objects I had collected over the years.

My husband's photograph sat beside the lamp.

I picked it up and looked at his face.

For the first time since the argument, I didn't feel the need to defend the room in my mind.

I knew why it mattered to me.

I knew what it meant.

And I no longer needed anyone else to agree before I could feel secure in that knowledge.

I put the photograph back.

Then I changed for bed and turned down the covers.

I thought about the days ahead.

David and Sarah still had financial problems to solve.

They still needed to find a place they could afford.

Our relationship would need time to recover from the strain of the past week.

There would probably be more uncomfortable conversations.

There might be disagreements.

I wasn't naive enough to believe that one apology had made us a perfect family.

But I no longer felt trapped between protecting my home and loving my son.

I could do both.

That was the lesson I had needed to learn.

Helping someone did not mean giving them the right to decide what happened to everything you had worked for.

Loving someone did not mean ignoring the moment they hurt you.

And forgiveness did not require me to forget the importance of my own dignity.

I turned off the lamp.

The room went dark, and the house settled around me.

Downstairs, the old wall clock continued ticking.

Its steady sound reminded me of all the years I had spent in this home, the life my husband and I had built, and the many changes I had already survived.

I had made it through losing him.

I had learned to live alone.

I had found ways to handle problems I once thought would overwhelm me.

I could handle this, too.

Not by forcing my son to become the person I wanted him to be.

Not by making Sarah feel guilty.

And not by giving up my place in the home I had worked so hard to keep.

I would handle it by being honest.

By offering help when I could.

By setting limits when I needed to.

And by remembering that I was still Kimberly Porter, a woman with a life of her own, even when the people she loved needed something from her.

I closed my eyes.

For the first time in days, I felt at peace in my own bedroom.

It wasn't because every problem had been solved.

It was because I had finally stopped believing that I had to surrender something important to prove that I loved my family.

I had opened my door to help them.

I could keep that door open without handing over the keys to my life.

And that was enough for tonight.

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: I Thought We Had
