I got a few things done."

I put the groceries away.

He closed his laptop halfway.

"Mom, I was thinking about what you said last night."

I stopped arranging the cans in the pantry.

"All right."

"I know we can't stay here forever."

I turned toward him.

That was the first time he had said those words without immediately adding an excuse.

I waited for him to continue.

"We just need to figure out what makes sense financially."

"I agree."

He looked at the laptop.

"I've been checking apartments, but the deposits are high, and we'd need enough saved for the first month."

I nodded.

"Those are things you'll need to include in your budget."

He looked up.

"I was hoping you might be able to help us with that."

I took a breath.

"What kind of help do you mean?"

He hesitated.

"Maybe we could stay a little longer while we save more."

I pulled out the chair opposite him and sat down.

"How much longer?"

"I don't know."

I watched him carefully.

I wasn't trying to catch him in a lie.

I needed to know whether he had thought seriously about the situation.

"David, I can't agree to an open-ended arrangement. I need us to choose a reasonable period and work toward a goal."

He rubbed his forehead.

"Why does everything have to be so formal?"

I felt my shoulders tense.

Then I let them relax.

"It doesn't have to be formal. But we need to be clear."

He looked away.

"We're family, Mom."

"Yes, we are."

"Families help each other."

"I believe that."

He seemed to take comfort in those words.

Then I continued.

"And families should be able to talk honestly about what they need."

He closed the laptop.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

I could tell that he had expected me to reassure him that he could stay as long as necessary.

Perhaps he believed that asking for a plan meant I was withdrawing my help.

I wasn't.

I was trying to make sure my help remained something I could give willingly rather than something I was expected to provide without limits.

"Let's start with the money," I said. "What have you been able to save since you moved in?"

He gave me a cautious look.

"Why do you need to know that?"

"Because saving money was the reason for this arrangement."

He leaned back.

"I don't think I should have to explain every dollar I spend."

I nodded slowly.

"You don't. It's your money, and you have a right to manage it privately."

He seemed surprised by that answer.

"But if we're going to discuss how long you can stay here while you save for another place, we need to know whether you're making progress toward that goal."

He looked down at the table.

I could see the argument forming in his mind.

I could also see him trying to decide whether it was worth having.

Finally, he said, "We've had some unexpected expenses."

"What kind?"

He mentioned a few bills and payments they had needed to make.

I listened without interrupting.

Some of the expenses sounded necessary.

Others were less clear to me, but I didn't accuse him of being careless.

I wasn't there to examine every decision he had made.

I was there to understand what stood between him and the next step.

When he finished, I asked whether he and Sarah had worked out a monthly savings target.

"No."

"Would you be willing to sit down together and make one?"

He sighed.

"I guess."

I let that answer stand.

It wasn't enthusiastic, but it was enough to continue.

"I don't need you to show me every bank statement," I said. "I need to know that you have a plan, and I need you to understand that this arrangement is temporary."

He nodded without looking at me.

Then he asked a question that caught me off guard.

"Do you think I'm a failure?"

I stared at him.

For a moment, I didn't know how to answer.

"No, David."

He rubbed his hands together.

"Because it feels like you think I should have everything figured out by now."

I felt a sharp sadness.

I had never wanted him to believe that needing help made him a failure.

"Everyone has difficult periods," I said. "Your father and I had them, too."

He looked up.

"We made mistakes. We had bills we didn't know how we were going to pay. We had times when we had to put off things we wanted because we couldn't afford them."

I paused.

"But we tried to face those problems honestly. That's what I'm asking you to do."

He looked down again.

"I know."

I reached across the table and rested my hand near his.

"You can struggle without being a failure. But you still have to take responsibility for what happens next."

He didn't move his hand toward mine.

He didn't pull away, either.

We sat quietly for a moment.

Then he closed the laptop completely.

"I'll talk to Sarah tonight."

"All right."

He stood and carried his coffee cup to the sink.

I watched him rinse it.

I wondered whether I had asked too much.

Then I remembered that I had not asked him for rent, repayment, or a contribution toward the mortgage.

I had asked for a plan.

That was a reasonable thing to ask from two adults who had come to live in my home.

Later, Sarah came downstairs carrying a laundry basket.

She stopped when she saw me at the kitchen table.

"David said you two talked."

"We did."

She placed the basket near the stairs.

"Is everything okay?"

"I think we're making a start."

She looked at me cautiously.

"What does that mean?"

"It means David and I agreed that we need to discuss how long you'll stay and how you'll save enough to find another place."

Her expression changed.

"So you're setting a deadline?"

"Not yet. We're discussing a plan."

She folded her arms.

"I don't think we should have to rush into anything."

"I don't want you to rush. I want us to be clear about the arrangement."

She looked toward the stairs.

"David said you were worried about how long we'd be here."

"I am thinking about it."

She shook her head.

"I thought you wanted us to be comfortable."

"I do."

I kept my voice steady.

"But comfort isn't the same as having no responsibilities."

She stared at me.

I could see that she didn't like the answer.

I didn't like having to give it.

But I was beginning to understand that her disappointment could not be the measure of whether I was being fair.

Sarah picked up the laundry basket.

"I'll talk to David."

"That's fine."

She went upstairs.

I sat quietly for a few minutes.

I had hoped that discussing the arrangement would bring some relief.

Instead, I felt the tension returning.

Perhaps I had expected too much from one conversation.

Perhaps I had hoped that once David understood my position, the rest would become easier.

But people did not always change their expectations just because someone explained them clearly.

Sometimes they needed time.

Sometimes they needed to make their own decisions.

And sometimes they simply disagreed.

I could live with disagreement.

What I could not continue doing was avoiding every difficult subject in the hope that nobody would become upset.

That evening, I made a simple dinner.

David came downstairs and helped set the table.

Sarah joined us a little later.

Nobody mentioned the conversation.

We ate quietly.

After dinner, David offered to wash the dishes.

I let him.

I wasn't going to turn every ordinary act into a test of his character.

When he finished, he came into the living room and stood near my chair.

"Mom?"

I looked up from my book.

"Yes?"

"We'll make a budget this weekend."

I closed the book.

"Thank you."

He nodded.

"I don't want you thinking we're taking advantage of you."

I felt my throat tighten.

"Then help me see that we're working toward the same goal."

He stood there for another moment.

Then he walked toward the stairs.

I watched him go.

It wasn't an apology.

It didn't erase the morning when he had supported Sarah's demand that I leave my bedroom.

But it was a practical step.

For now, I decided to accept it for what it was.

I picked up my book again.

I had learned that a promise was not the same as progress.

Still, progress had to begin somewhere.

And perhaps the first step was simply getting my son to understand that I could love him, help him, and still expect him to take responsibility for his own future.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: The First Time We Sat Down to Discuss Their Future, I Learned That My Son Was More Afraid of Disappointing His Wife Than Disappointing Me

The next day, I made a list.
