But moving forward doesn't mean pretending nobody did anything wrong."

He rubbed his thumb along the edge of his phone.

"I know."

I waited.

He didn't say anything else.

I wanted to believe that those two words meant he understood.

But I had heard him say similar things before.

Knowing that someone was hurt and understanding why they were hurt were not always the same thing.

I picked up my mug again.

"I'm not asking you to spend every morning apologizing to me," I said. "I'm asking you to understand that I opened my home to help you. I didn't expect to have to defend my place in it."

He nodded slowly.

"I understand that you're upset."

I looked at him.

"I don't think that's quite the same as understanding why."

His expression tightened.

For a moment, I thought he would argue.

Instead, he stood and removed his toast from the toaster.

"I have some things to take care of."

"All right."

He left the kitchen with his plate.

I stayed at the table.

I wasn't surprised by the way the conversation had ended.

Still, I felt disappointed.

I had hoped that time might make it easier for David to speak honestly.

Perhaps time was only making it easier for him to avoid the subject.

After breakfast, I opened the curtains in the living room.

The morning light fell across my husband's chair.

I straightened the small cushion near the armrest.

Then I went outside to water the plants.

The soil in the pots had dried more quickly than I expected.

I poured water slowly, watching it darken the surface.

My husband had always been better at remembering when the plants needed attention.

I used to tease him about it.

He would tell me that living things did better when someone paid attention to them.

At the time, I thought he was talking about the garden.

Now I wondered how often the same thing was true of families.

I could keep offering David food, shelter, and patience.

I could make room for him to talk whenever he was ready.

But I couldn't do all the work of repairing our relationship while he avoided looking at what had damaged it.

The plants could not ask me to understand why they were wilting.

My son could.

I went back inside and put the watering can away.

Later that afternoon, Sarah came into the kitchen while I was preparing vegetables for dinner.

She opened a cupboard and took out a glass.

"Are you cooking for everyone?"

"There's enough for everyone."

She filled the glass with water.

"David said he might be going out later."

"That's fine."

She leaned against the counter.

For a moment, I thought she might say something about the bedroom.

Instead, she looked toward the living room.

"Have you always kept the furniture like that?"

I glanced over my shoulder.

"More or less."

"Even after your husband passed away?"

I put down the knife.

"Yes."

She nodded.

"I guess I would have changed things."

I wasn't sure what she expected me to say.

Perhaps she was trying to make conversation.

Perhaps she was trying to understand me.

Either way, I answered honestly.

"Everyone handles those things differently."

She took another sip of water.

"I didn't mean anything by it."

"I know."

I returned to the vegetables.

She remained in the kitchen for a few seconds, then carried her glass upstairs.

I watched her leave.

It occurred to me that we had spent several days speaking to each other without really communicating.

We exchanged information.

We asked where things were.

We discussed meals and schedules.

But we avoided anything that might require us to be honest about our feelings.

I wasn't sure whether Sarah wanted a better relationship with me.

I wasn't sure whether she thought the bedroom argument had been my fault.

I couldn't answer those questions for her.

I could only decide how I wanted to behave.

I continued making dinner.

That evening, David returned later than I expected.

He entered the kitchen while I was putting away the leftovers.

"Did you save me some?"

"Of course."

I opened the refrigerator and took out a covered plate.

He warmed it in the microwave.

Then he sat at the table and began eating.

I joined him with a cup of tea.

For several minutes, we talked about ordinary things.

He told me that he had made a few phone calls about work.

I asked whether anyone had given him a useful lead.

He said there were possibilities, but nothing definite.

I told him I hoped something worked out soon.

He thanked me.

For the first time in days, I felt as though I was talking to my son rather than to someone who happened to be living in my house.

Then he mentioned that Sarah had been looking at apartments online.

I looked up.

"Has she found anything?"

"Not really. Most places are more expensive than we expected."

"That makes things difficult."

He nodded.

"We might need more time."

I rested my hands around my cup.

"How much more time do you think you'll need?"

He stopped eating.

"I don't know yet."

I had expected that answer.

Still, I wanted us to begin discussing the arrangement as adults.

"David, when I offered you the guest room, I understood that you needed somewhere to stay while you saved money and found another place."

"I remember."

"I want to help you do that. But I think we should talk about a plan rather than leaving everything open-ended."

He leaned back in his chair.

"Are you saying you want us out?"

"No."

The answer came quickly because I didn't want him to misunderstand me.

"I'm saying we should agree on what we're working toward."

He looked at his plate.

"We've barely had time to catch our breath."

"I understand."

I kept my voice gentle.

"But I need to know what to expect in my own home, too."

He didn't answer immediately.

I could see the same discomfort returning to his face.

I wondered whether he heard every boundary as a sign that I no longer wanted him around.

That wasn't what I was saying.

I wanted him to succeed.

I wanted him to find a place he could afford.

I wanted him to feel that asking his mother for help had not been a mistake.

But I also wanted to know that the arrangement had a purpose.

"I don't expect you to solve everything tonight," I told him. "We can talk about it when you've had time to think."

He nodded.

"Okay."

This time, I didn't mistake his agreement for a solution.

I simply accepted it as the beginning of a conversation we still needed to have.

After he finished eating, David washed his plate.

I thanked him.

He looked surprised, then smiled faintly.

It was such a small moment.

But I appreciated it.

Not because washing a plate was some great act of kindness.

Because it reminded me that we could still do ordinary things for one another without keeping score.

I went upstairs later that night.

My bedroom was quiet.

I changed into my nightclothes and sat beside the window for a few minutes.

I thought about the conversation at dinner.

We hadn't solved the problem.

David hadn't apologized.

Sarah hadn't acknowledged that her demand had been wrong.

But I had said what I needed to say without turning it into another argument.

That mattered.

I turned toward the bedside table and looked at my husband's photograph.

"I hope I can keep this from getting worse," I whispered.

Then I shook my head slightly.

I couldn't control whether things got worse.

I could only control whether I continued to speak honestly.

I turned off the lamp and climbed into bed.

For the first time in several nights, I didn't replay the argument from beginning to end.

I thought instead about the plan David and I needed to make.

A temporary arrangement required more than good intentions.

It required honesty about what each person could give and what each person expected.

I had offered him a place to recover.

I had not promised to make every difficult decision disappear.

And I was finally learning that keeping those two things separate was not a failure of love.

It was part of loving someone without losing myself.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: When I Finally Asked My Son for a Clear Plan, I Discovered How Much Easier It Had Been for Him to Accept My Help Than to Discuss Its Limits

The following morning, I woke to the sound of someone moving boxes upstairs.
