7 – The More I Tried to Keep the Peace, the More I Realized That Silence Could Not Repair What Had Been Damaged Between Us

The next few days passed without another demand about the bedroom.

At first, I thought that meant the problem had settled.

David and Sarah moved through the house as they had before.

They used the kitchen.

They kept their belongings in the guest room.

They came and went according to their own schedules.

I tried to return to my ordinary routine.

I watered the plants near the back door.

I folded laundry.

I made meals that were simple enough for one person but easy to share if anyone wanted some.

I didn't ask for thanks.

I didn't expect the house to become silent whenever I entered a room.

I only wanted things to feel normal again.

But normal had changed.

When David walked into the kitchen, I found myself wondering whether he was going to bring up the argument.

When Sarah passed me in the hallway, I wondered whether she still believed I had been unreasonable.

I disliked that feeling.

I had never wanted to live in a house where every ordinary conversation carried the weight of something left unsaid.

One evening, I was putting away clean dishes when David came in.

He opened a cupboard and took out a plate.

"Are you making dinner?"

"Just something simple."

He nodded.

"Smells good."

I smiled a little.

"There's enough if you want some."

"Thanks, Mom."

For a moment, the exchange felt like the way things used to be.

Then he glanced toward the stairs.

"Sarah might eat later."

"That's fine."

He carried his plate into the other room.

I stood beside the counter after he left.

It was such a small interaction.

Nothing about it should have made me sad.

But I missed the ease we had once shared.

I missed being able to talk to my son without wondering whether he was measuring every word against what his wife might think.

I missed feeling that he trusted me enough to disagree with me honestly.

Perhaps he felt the same distance.

I couldn't know unless he told me.

And I couldn't make him tell me.

That night, I sat alone in the living room after dinner.

My husband's chair was beside the window.

I had spent years thinking that grief was the hardest part of living without him.

I knew better now.

Grief had been painful, but it had been honest.

I missed my husband because he was gone.

I could name that loss.

I could learn to live around it.

The distance growing between David and me was harder to understand.

He was still here.

I could hear his footsteps upstairs.

I could hear him speaking to Sarah.

I could knock on the door and ask him to sit with me.

But I couldn't return us to the relationship we had before that morning simply by pretending the argument had never happened.

I needed him to understand what he had done.

And he needed to be willing to look at it.

Neither of those things was in my control.

I turned off the living room lamp and went upstairs.

At my bedroom door, I paused.

The room was exactly as I had left it.

I looked at the dresser, the curtains, and the photograph beside the bed.

I was grateful for the familiar sight.

Then I felt embarrassed by my gratitude again.

A person shouldn't need to celebrate the fact that her own home remained hers.

I closed the door and changed for bed.

Before turning out the light, I looked once more at the photograph.

My husband had always believed that family mattered.

He also believed that people should be honest with one another.

I wondered what he would have said about David's behavior.

I couldn't answer that question for him.

But I could imagine him looking at me with the patient expression he used when he thought I was making something harder than it needed to be.

He might have told me to speak plainly.

He might have reminded me that loving someone did not mean accepting everything they did.

I turned off the lamp.

The room went dark.

I lay there listening to the house settle for the night.

I didn't know how long David and Sarah would stay.

I didn't know whether they would eventually apologize.

I didn't know whether our relationship would become easier or more strained.

What I did know was that silence could not repair something neither person was willing to discuss.

I had done my part by opening the door.

Now I had to allow David to decide what kind of son he wanted to be while living under my roof.

<a
