I said.

She poured herself a cup.

The conversation ended there.

No apology.

No new demand.

No explanation.

Just three people sharing a kitchen that had felt simpler before they moved in.

I finished my breakfast and carried my plate to the sink.

"I have a few things to take care of today," I said.

David nodded.

"Okay."

I wasn't sure whether he understood that I needed space or simply wanted the conversation to end.

I decided not to interpret his silence.

I put on my shoes and collected my keys.

Before leaving the kitchen, I looked toward the hallway.

My bedroom door was open.

Nothing had been moved.

My husband's photograph was still on the bedside table.

The curtains were still where we had hung them.

I felt a small measure of relief.

Then I felt foolish for needing it.

It was my room.

I shouldn't have had to feel grateful that my belongings remained untouched.

Outside, the morning air was cool.

I stood on the front step for a moment, listening to the neighborhood wake up.

A lawn mower started somewhere down the street.

A delivery truck passed.

A neighbor waved from across the road.

I waved back.

Ordinary life was continuing.

That was reassuring.

I had spent too much of the previous day thinking that one argument had somehow changed everything.

It hadn't changed who I was.

It hadn't changed who owned my home.

It hadn't erased the years David and I had shared.

But it had shown me something I could no longer ignore.

Love did not prevent people from behaving badly.

And being family did not automatically make every request reasonable.

I locked the front door and walked toward my car.

I needed some time to think without hearing anyone else's opinion.

I didn't want to make a decision about David's future in my home while I was still hurt.

I also didn't want my reluctance to upset him to become another reason I ignored my own needs.

Those two things had to be allowed to exist together.

I could care about him.

I could still want him to succeed.

And I could expect him to respect me.

For the first time in a long while, I understood that those wishes did not contradict one another.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: I Had Offered My Son a Temporary Place to Recover Financially, Not Permission to Rewrite the Rules of the Home I Had Built

I woke before the alarm I no longer needed.
