I knew you had a son."

"You were watching us?"

"Not every day. Not closely."

She took a breath.

"I was afraid to get near you. But I needed to know that you were all right."

Matteo looked as if he wanted to ask ten questions at once.

He chose one.

"How long have you known about him?"

"Long enough to worry about him."

"Why?"

"Because I knew what it was like to grow up around people who were always frightened."

Matteo looked away.

Alessia continued.

"When I first saw Noah, he was upset. Everyone was trying to calm him, but they were all talking at once."

She paused.

"I recognized that look."

"What look?"

"The look of a child who doesn't know what will happen next."

Matteo's face tightened.

"You think I frightened my own son?"

"No."

She spoke gently.

"I think he was surrounded by tension he couldn't understand."

Matteo did not answer.

"He doesn't know who your enemies are," she continued. "He doesn't understand why people become quiet when you enter a room. He only knows how people sound and how they hold him."

I watched Matteo absorb those words.

He had spent years building a world where fear kept danger away.

He had not considered how that same fear might fill every room his son entered.

Alessia looked at him.

"I wasn't trying to replace you."

"I know."

"I never wanted Noah to think you didn't love him."

Matteo's eyes grew wet, though he turned his face before I could be certain.

"I do love him."

"I know you do."

"Then why does he cry when I hold him?"

Alessia took a slow breath.

"Because love isn't always enough to make someone feel safe."

Matteo looked at her.

She did not soften the truth.

"You have to show him that he doesn't need to be afraid."

He stood quietly.

Then he nodded.

"I don't know how."

It was the most honest thing I had ever heard him say.

Alessia's expression softened.

"You can learn."

Matteo looked toward the bedroom.

"Will you help me?"

She did not answer immediately.

"I can help you understand him."

He waited.

"But you have to do the work yourself."

He nodded again.

"I will."

She looked at him carefully, as if she were trying to decide whether to believe the promise.

Then she continued.

"There is something else you need to understand about Adrian."

Matteo's expression changed.

"Tell me."

"He knew how to use your anger long before I disappeared."

Matteo said nothing.

"He knew that if he gave you enough reason to suspect someone, you would stop listening to them."

She glanced at him.

"He didn't have to convince you of every lie. He only had to make you doubt the truth."

Matteo's jaw tightened.

"Why didn't I see it?"

"Because you trusted him."

"That should have made me more careful."

"It should have made you more willing to ask questions."

He looked down at his hands.

I had heard people tell Matteo he was wrong before.

Most did it carefully.

Alessia did not.

She was not trying to punish him.

She was telling him what he needed to hear.

That made it harder for him to dismiss.

"What else did Adrian do?" he asked.

Alessia looked toward the bedroom again.

"He made sure I understood that coming back would bring danger to the people around me."

"Did he threaten the children directly?"

"He made it clear that he knew where I was and that he could reach anyone connected to me."

Matteo's expression darkened.

"I should have found you."

"Perhaps."

She paused.

"But finding me would not have solved everything."

He looked at her.

"I would have protected you."

"I know you would have tried."

There it was again.

The distinction between trying and succeeding.

Matteo closed his eyes briefly.

When he opened them, he looked tired.

"What do you need from me now?"

Alessia considered the question.

"Time."

He nodded.

"All right."

"And I need you not to turn this into a war with Adrian."

His expression tightened.

"He threatened you."

"Yes."

"He used our family against us."

"Yes."

"Then you expect me to do nothing?"

"No."

She met his eyes.

"I expect you to think before you act."

Matteo looked toward the stairs.

I knew how difficult that request would be for him.

He had spent years believing that a fast response was the same as a strong one.

Now the woman he had lost was asking him to choose patience over revenge.

"What if he comes after us again?" he asked.

"Then we protect the children and get help."

Matteo looked at her.

"We?"

Alessia's face changed slightly.

She had not meant to offer him that word.

But she did not take it back.

"We have to keep them safe."

He nodded slowly.

For the first time that night, he seemed willing to accept a future that did not depend on getting everything he wanted immediately.

I left them then.

I went downstairs and stood in the kitchen.

A glass of water sat on the counter.

I drank it slowly, listening to the house settle around me.

I thought about the chapel.

The broken stained glass.

The wet stone floor.

The way Matteo had stepped aside so Alessia could decide how close she wanted him.

Those moments had seemed small at the time.

Now I understood they were the first signs of a different kind of choice.

Matteo could still be angry.

He could still want answers.

But he had finally begun to understand that the people he loved were not problems to solve.

They were people who had to be allowed to speak.

Near midnight, I heard footsteps on the stairs.

Matteo came into the kitchen.

He looked at the glass in my hand.

"Is there any water left?"

I filled another glass and passed it to him.

He drank half of it.

Then he stood with both hands resting on the counter.

"I almost lost her twice."

I did not know what to say.

He looked toward the dark window.

"The first time, I believed she had betrayed me. Tonight, I nearly made the same mistake again."

I leaned against the counter.

"What will you do now?"

He took a slow breath.

"Listen."

It was not a grand answer.

It was not a promise that everything would be fine.

It was the first answer I had heard from him that did not depend on controlling someone else.

And for the first time in a long while, I believed he might mean it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: The Baby Who Finally Reached for His Father, and the Family That Learned Love Could Not Be Built on Fear

We waited beneath the chapel roof until the rain eased.
