I couldn't stay in one place long enough to feel safe."

I could see how difficult it was for her to say even that much.

She had spent years protecting herself through silence.

Now every answer opened another question.

"Adrian kept finding ways to remind me that he knew where I was," she continued.

"He never had to explain what he would do."

Matteo looked at Adrian.

"How did you find her?"

Adrian smiled faintly.

"You think I owe you an explanation?"

"No."

Matteo's voice was quiet.

"I think you owe her one."

Adrian's smile disappeared.

Alessia shifted Noah in her arms.

The baby made a small sound, and she rubbed his back without breaking eye contact with Matteo.

"I tried to believe that if I stayed away, everything would settle down," she said.

"It didn't."

"No."

"Then why come back now?"

She looked at Noah for a long time.

"Because I couldn't keep living like a stranger to my own family."

Matteo's expression changed.

He looked at her as if he had heard the words but could not yet accept them.

"Your family," he repeated.

Alessia nodded.

"I never stopped thinking of you that way."

He looked away.

I had seen Matteo negotiate with men who wanted his money.

I had watched him stand in rooms where everyone expected him to lose.

He could remain calm through threats that would have terrified most people.

But he could not find a simple answer to his wife's confession.

Because he had spent years believing she had chosen to leave him.

Now he was being asked to consider that someone had made staying impossible.

I felt sorry for him.

Then I felt ashamed of that feeling.

Alessia was the one who had disappeared.

She was the one who had spent years afraid.

Yet my first instinct was still to protect Matteo from pain.

That was what living around him had done to me.

It had taught me to see his hurt before anyone else's.

Adrian moved toward the center of the chapel.

"Enough."

Matteo did not turn.

"No."

Adrian stopped.

"You are letting her play you."

Matteo finally faced him.

"You keep saying that."

"Because it's true."

"Then explain why you're so desperate for me to stop listening."

Adrian's jaw shifted.

For a moment, I thought he might lower the weapon.

Instead, he tightened his grip.

"You're making a mistake."

Matteo glanced at the gun.

"No. I made mistakes before tonight."

He looked back at Alessia.

"I may be making more."

His voice softened.

"But I won't make this one without hearing her."

Alessia's eyes filled again.

She did not smile.

She did not reach for him.

She only nodded.

It was a small gesture, but I understood what it meant.

For the first time in years, he had given her room to speak without demanding that she prove herself before she began.

Nico stirred.

Alessia adjusted him against her shoulder.

Noah remained quiet.

Matteo watched both children.

"How long have you been caring for Noah?"

"Long enough to know when he's frightened."

"That isn't what I asked."

She looked at him.

"I've been near him for less time than you think."

Matteo studied her face.

"You knew how to calm him immediately."

"I watched him."

"Everyone watches him."

"Not everyone notices him."

The words struck harder than she intended.

Matteo looked down.

I saw his shoulders rise with a slow breath.

He had loved Noah from the moment the child entered his life.

But love had not taught him how to understand the baby.

He had assumed that providing safety was the same as making someone feel safe.

They were not the same thing.

Alessia seemed to understand that difference.

I wondered whether she had learned it during the years she had been away.

Or whether she had always known it, and Matteo had simply never listened.

He looked at her again.

"Can I hold him?"

Alessia glanced down at Noah.

Then she looked at Matteo.

"Not while everyone is standing here with weapons."

Nobody spoke.

Even Adrian seemed caught off guard by the answer.

Matteo slowly lowered his hands.

She was right.

Noah was a baby, not a prize to be passed between adults while they argued about the past.

"You're right," Matteo said.

Alessia looked surprised.

So was I.

Matteo turned toward Rafael.

"Get everyone out of the line between us."

Rafael did not move immediately.

He looked at Adrian.

Then at Matteo.

Adrian raised his weapon a little higher.

"Nobody is going anywhere."

Matteo faced him.

"Then you're going to have to explain why you need two babies to witness this."

Adrian's face went cold.

For the first time, he looked less like a man in control and more like a man who had run out of good answers.

And I realized that the truth was no longer simply something Matteo wanted to hear.

It was something Adrian was afraid to let him hear.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: The Question About Nico That Made the Room Go Silent, and the Difference Between Protecting a Child and Possessing One

I had never seen Matteo look at Alessia without knowing what to say.
