he said.

I looked at him.

"Now?"

"Now."

I wanted to ask whether he had learned something new.

But I could see the answer in his face.

He had decided that waiting was a weakness.

I followed him.

Rafael came with us, along with several men Matteo trusted.

Nobody talked much during the drive.

Rain began before we reached the grounds.

By the time we arrived, it was coming down hard enough to blur the windows.

The chapel stood beyond the main building.

Its old stone walls looked darker in the rain, and the stained glass near the entrance had a crack that ran through one corner.

I remembered seeing Alessia there years earlier.

She had stood near the doorway, looking over her shoulder.

I had thought she was waiting for Matteo.

Now I wondered whether she had been trying to leave before he arrived.

Matteo stepped out of the car.

He did not wait for anyone to open an umbrella.

Water ran down his face as he crossed the courtyard.

Rafael followed close behind.

I stayed a few steps back.

There was something wrong about the way the place looked that evening.

Not because of the weather.

Because it felt as if we had arrived at the end of a conversation that had started long before any of us understood it.

The chapel doors were not fully closed.

Matteo pushed one open.

The hinges made a tired sound.

Inside, the air was cold.

Rain tapped against the windows, and the damaged stained glass scattered uneven patches of color across the floor.

Liana stood near the front.

She held Noah against her chest.

Nico was beside her, clinging to her shoulder.

I did not know what to say about the second baby.

I only knew that seeing both children there made the situation feel more serious than anything we had discussed at the house.

Liana looked at Matteo.

She did not seem surprised to see him.

That frightened me more than if she had screamed.

Matteo stopped several feet away.

For a moment, he only stared at her.

Then he looked at Noah.

The baby was quiet.

His cheek rested against Liana, and one small hand held her clothing.

Matteo's face tightened.

He had spent days trying to understand why his own son could not settle with him.

Now he stood in front of a woman who could hold the baby without making him cry.

And she was waiting in a chapel connected to the disappearance of his wife.

I understood then that Matteo was no longer looking for an explanation about Noah.

He was looking for the truth about Alessia.

A movement behind him caught my attention.

Adrian entered through the broken doorway.

Three men came in behind him.

Matteo turned.

Adrian held his weapon raised toward him.

The sight of it made the room seem smaller.

Rafael's hand moved toward his jacket.

Adrian noticed.

"Keep your hand where it is."

Rafael froze.

I felt my own body go rigid.

Liana pulled both babies closer.

Noah stirred, but she held him securely.

Nico tightened his grip on her shoulder.

Two frightened children.

One woman who seemed to know exactly why we had all been brought there.

And two men whose history with each other had clearly reached a point where words might no longer be enough.

Adrian looked at Matteo with a faint smile.

"You were warned about trusting the wrong person."

Matteo's voice remained quiet.

"You mean my wife?"

Adrian's smile widened slightly.

"You always knew people could turn against you. You just thought you would be the one to decide when."

Matteo did not lower his gaze.

"Alessia never turned against me."

Adrian tilted his head.

"Then why did she disappear?"

Liana flinched.

It was small, but I saw it.

Matteo saw it, too.

He turned toward her.

She looked as if she wanted to speak.

Instead, she held the babies tighter.

Adrian noticed the movement and laughed under his breath.

"Look at her. Still trying to protect everyone."

Matteo's expression changed.

"What did you do?"

Adrian did not answer immediately.

He looked at Liana.

Then at the children.

Then back at Matteo.

"You should have listened to your instincts about your marriage."

Matteo's jaw tightened.

"Tell me what happened."

Adrian shook his head.

"You still think this is about what happened. It is about what you refused to see."

I wanted to move.

I wanted to put myself between them.

But Adrian's men were watching every movement, and Rafael had not taken his eyes off the weapon.

There was nowhere safe to go.

Matteo glanced at Liana again.

"Tell me the truth."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I tried."

His face hardened.

"You disappeared."

"I didn't have a choice."

"Everyone has a choice."

She looked at him as if those words hurt more than anything Adrian had said.

"Not when someone else controls what happens to your family."

The room fell quiet.

Adrian's smile faded a little.

Matteo looked from Liana to him.

"Explain."

Liana shook her head.

"I wanted to tell you. I wanted to come back."

"Then why didn't you?"

She looked down at Noah.

For a moment, she seemed unable to speak.

When she finally lifted her face, her voice was unsteady.

"Because Adrian made sure I understood what would happen if I did."

Adrian's expression turned cold.

"Be careful."

Liana did not look at him.

She kept her eyes on Matteo.

"I was afraid of losing everything."

Matteo's face changed.

It was not forgiveness.

It was not understanding.

It was the first sign that he had begun to consider the possibility that the story he had believed for years might be wrong.

I watched him struggle with that thought.

He had built his life around the idea that betrayal was simple.

Someone either stood beside him or stood against him.

But Liana was telling him that the truth had never been that simple.

Adrian had forced her into silence.

She had tried to return.

And the man who believed he had been abandoned might never have known how much fear had shaped her choices.

Matteo looked at Adrian.

"What did you threaten her with?"

Adrian raised his chin.

"You think you're the only man who knows how to make people obey?"

Matteo's eyes went hard.

"No."

He took a breath.

"But I want to hear you say it."

Adrian laughed once.

"You want a confession now?"

"I want the truth."

Adrian glanced toward the children.

"Then perhaps you should ask why she was so desperate to keep them away from you."

Liana's face went pale.

"Don't."

It was the first time she had spoken to Adrian with open anger.

He ignored her.

Matteo looked at the babies.

Then at Liana.

The question was already forming in his eyes.

I could see it.

So could she.

But before either of them could say anything, a loud crack of thunder rolled over the chapel.

Noah began to cry.

Liana rocked him gently.

Nico pressed closer to her.

The sound of the baby's distress filled the room, but this time Matteo did not reach for him.

He stood still.

He was watching Liana.

And I realized that the question of why Noah trusted her had become something much larger.

Matteo was beginning to understand that a child could recognize a person as safe long before the adults around him were willing to admit why.

Liana wiped a tear from her cheek.

"I never wanted any of this," she said.

Matteo's voice was barely above a whisper.

"Then tell me what you wanted."

She looked at him for a long time.

Then her eyes moved to Noah.

"To come home."

Those words seemed to strike him harder than a threat.

For the first time since entering the chapel, Matteo looked uncertain.

Adrian watched the exchange with growing irritation.

He still held the weapon.

He still had men behind him.

But the conversation was moving beyond his control.

Liana had stopped pretending that nothing connected her to Alessia.

Matteo had stopped insisting that her disappearance could only mean betrayal.

And I knew that whatever came next would depend on whether Matteo could listen to the woman he had spent years believing had abandoned him.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: The Woman Behind the Disappearance Finally Spoke, While Two Babies Held the Last Piece of a Family’s Broken Truth

I should have told Matteo what Liana said.
