Liana said.

Matteo turned toward her.

She did not step back.

"He doesn't need another person pulling him around," she continued. "He needs someone to let him settle."

Matteo looked down at his son.

Noah's tiny hands had closed around the front of his shirt.

For a moment, Matteo seemed unable to decide whether to hold him closer or put him down.

Then he loosened his grip.

The baby kept crying, but the sound softened.

Liana watched without saying anything else.

I remember thinking that she had a strange kind of courage.

Not the kind that made a person reckless.

The kind that allowed someone to stand quietly in a room where everyone else was afraid to breathe.

That evening, Matteo asked her to take Noah.

She hesitated.

"Are you sure?"

"Try."

She moved slowly.

One hand supported the baby's head while the other held him against her chest.

Noah made a small, unhappy sound.

Then he stopped.

The room became so quiet that I could hear the clock on the wall.

Matteo stared.

Noah rested his cheek against Liana's shoulder.

His breathing settled.

His fingers caught the edge of her clothing, and his eyelids began to droop.

It was not a miracle.

It was a baby finally feeling safe enough to rest.

But Matteo looked as if he had just witnessed something impossible.

"How did you do that?"

Liana glanced down at Noah.

"I didn't do anything."

He studied her face.

"He's never behaved like that with anyone."

"I know."

Those two words bothered me more than they should have.

She had said them too quickly.

Matteo heard it, too.

His eyes narrowed slightly.

"What do you mean, you know?"

Liana adjusted Noah in her arms.

"I mean I can see how upset he gets."

Matteo did not answer.

She had given him a reasonable explanation.

Still, something had changed.

I could feel it in the room.

Matteo had spent his life learning to recognize lies, and now he was looking at a woman whose calmness made him suspicious.

He let the silence stretch.

Then he asked her to put Noah down.

Liana carried the baby to his crib.

Noah stirred when she lowered him onto the mattress, and his little hand reached for her sleeve.

She stayed beside him until he relaxed.

Only then did she turn away.

Matteo watched every movement.

I wanted to tell him to stop.

Not because I knew what Liana was hiding.

I didn't.

But I understood that his need to control everything could become dangerous when he was afraid.

And he was afraid.

He was afraid that his own child did not trust him.

He was afraid that someone else could calm Noah more easily than he could.

Most of all, I suspected he was afraid that Liana understood something about his family that he had failed to see.

Later that night, I found him alone in the sitting room.

He had not changed out of his dark shirt.

A glass of water sat untouched beside him.

"You're thinking too much," I told him.

He did not look up.

"She's hiding something."

"Maybe."

"You're supposed to tell me I'm wrong."

"I've never been very good at lying to you."

That earned me a brief glance.

He looked tired.

Not physically tired.

The other kind.

The kind that came from carrying a suspicion for so long that it started to feel like a memory.

"What do you know about her?" he asked.

"Only what I've seen."

"And what have you seen?"

I thought about the way Liana held Noah.

The patience in her hands.

The way she never seemed surprised by his distress.

"I've seen a woman who knows how to calm a frightened child."

Matteo's mouth tightened.

"That isn't what I asked."

"No," I admitted. "It isn't."

He stood and walked toward the window.

Outside, the grounds were dark, and the security lights made the wet paths shine.

"I won't have secrets in my house," he said.

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because his entire life had been built around secrets, and he had somehow convinced himself that the rules did not apply to him.

I kept that thought to myself.

The next morning, Noah cried again when a different employee tried to carry him.

Liana took him without being asked.

He settled against her within seconds.

Matteo saw it happen from the doorway.

He did not interrupt.

He simply stood there, watching his son rest against a woman he barely knew.

Then his gaze moved to Liana's face.

She looked down at Noah.

For the first time, I noticed something beneath her composure.

Grief.

It was there and gone so quickly that I might have imagined it.

But Matteo noticed something, too.

He stepped into the room.

"Liana."

She looked up.

"Yes?"

"Have we met before?"

Her arms tightened around Noah.

It was a small movement.

Almost nothing.

But the baby stirred, and she immediately relaxed her hold.

"I don't think so," she said.

Matteo remained where he was.

He had asked a simple question.

She had given him a simple answer.

Neither of them believed it.

I knew then that Noah's crying was only the beginning.

Because Matteo was no longer asking why his son trusted Liana.

He was trying to understand why she seemed so afraid of being recognized.

And I had a feeling that the answer would hurt him far more than the sound of a crying baby ever could.

Click here to continue reading: PART 2: The Name Matteo Refused to Speak, the Photograph Nobody Wanted Found, and the Woman Who Knew Too Much About His Son

I used to believe that a man could protect his family if he was feared enough.
