14 – I Thought the Hardest Part Was Getting Jake to Understand Me, Until I Realized His Mother Still Expected Everything to Return to Normal

For several days, Jake seemed more comfortable making decisions without consulting his mother.

He didn't announce every change.

He didn't make speeches about boundaries.

He simply began acting differently.

When Diane called, he answered if he was free.

When he wasn't, he called her back later.

When she asked about our plans, he told her what we had already decided.

I appreciated those changes.

They made our ordinary days feel more like our own.

But I knew that Diane had not suddenly accepted everything.

I had seen enough of her behavior to understand that one calm conversation did not necessarily change what someone believed.

The next challenge arrived through a phone call.

Jake was in the kitchen when his phone rang.

He answered while I was putting groceries away.

“Hi, Mom.”

I continued arranging things in the cupboard.

At first, he sounded relaxed.

Then he became quiet.

He glanced at me once.

I turned back to the groceries.

I didn't want him to feel that he couldn't speak to his mother when I was nearby.

After a minute, he said, “We can talk about that.”

He listened.

Then he shook his head.

“No, I can't promise that.”

I stopped moving.

His voice remained calm.

He listened again.

“Because we haven't decided yet.”

Another pause.

Then he said goodbye and ended the call.

I closed the cupboard.

“What was that about?”

He put his phone on the counter.

“Mom wants us to come over this weekend.”

I nodded.

“That's fine.”

“She wants us to stay for most of the day.”

I waited.

“And she wants us to tell her in advance whenever we're planning to do something on weekends.”

I stared at him.

“Why?”

He gave a tired smile.

“She says she doesn't like being left out.”

I took a breath.

I understood wanting to spend time with family.

I understood missing someone.

But expecting another couple to report their plans in advance was different.

“Jake, we can tell her when we're visiting,” I said. “We don't need to give her a schedule of our entire weekend.”

He nodded.

“That's what I told her.”

I looked at him.

“You did?”

“Yes.”

I felt relieved.

Then I noticed the way he was rubbing his hands together.

He was still uncomfortable.

I knew that feeling.

It was what happened when he said no to Diane and then had to sit with the knowledge that she was unhappy.

“What did she say?”

“She said I was making things difficult.”

I looked down at the groceries.

I had heard that accusation before.

It was a way of turning a boundary into a personal attack.

If Jake refused a request, Diane could say he was being difficult.

If I objected to her behavior, she could say I was causing problems.

Either way, the person asking for something reasonable ended up defending themselves.

“Did you change your answer?” I asked.

“No.”

I looked up.

He met my eyes.

“No,” he repeated. “I told her we'd let her know when we could visit, but we weren't going to arrange every weekend around her.”

I felt a quiet sense of relief.

“Thank you.”

He shrugged.

“I should be able to say that.”

“Yes,” I said. “You should.”

I didn't want to make him feel that he deserved a medal for doing something ordinary.

But I also didn't want to withhold appreciation when he made an effort.

We finished putting the groceries away.

That evening, we talked about what we wanted to do over the weekend.

We had a few chores to finish.

We wanted some time together.

Nothing extraordinary.

That was what I wanted most.

A life in which ordinary plans did not become negotiations with someone outside our marriage.

We decided to stay home on Saturday and keep Sunday open.

Jake told me he would let his mother know when he spoke to her again.

I didn't remind him.

I trusted him to handle it.

Or I was trying to.

The following afternoon, Diane called while we were sitting at the kitchen table.

Jake answered.

He listened for a while.

Then he said, “We're staying home tomorrow.”

I watched him.

He paused.

“We already made plans.”

Another pause.

“No, Mom. We're not doing anything special. We just want a quiet day.”

I felt my shoulders relax.

He wasn't making excuses.

He wasn't inventing a reason that might seem important enough to satisfy her.

He was telling her the truth.

He wanted to spend the day at home.

That was enough.

He listened for a few more seconds.

Then he said, “We'll see you another time.”

He ended the call and set the phone down.

I waited.

“She wasn't happy,” he said.

I nodded.

“I'm sorry.”

He looked at me.

“Why are you sorry?”

“Because I know it's hard for you when she's upset.”

He seemed to consider that.

Then he shook his head.

“I need to get used to it.”

I felt something loosen inside me.

He had finally said the thing I had been trying to explain for weeks.

His mother's unhappiness was not automatically a sign that he had done something wrong.

He could care about her feelings without allowing them to make every decision for him.

I smiled.

“That's true.”

He reached across the table and took my hand.

“I don't want you to feel like you have to fight for a place in my life.”

My throat tightened.

I looked at our joined hands.

“I don't want to fight with your mother.”

“I know.”

“I just want to be your wife without feeling like that's something she has to approve.”

He squeezed my hand.

“You are my wife.”

I nodded.

I believed that he loved me.

I had never really doubted that part.

What I had doubted was whether he understood that loving me required more than saying the right words when we were alone.

It required him to make decisions that reflected those words.

He was learning.

I could see that.

But I also knew that Diane might not accept the changes quietly.

She had been accustomed to having a particular kind of influence over her son.

When that influence began to weaken, she might push harder to regain it.

I couldn't predict what she would do.

I could only pay attention to what Jake did in response.

That weekend, we stayed home.

We cooked together.

We finished a few chores.

We sat on the couch in the evening and watched television.

No one called to ask where we were.

No one entered our bedroom.

Nothing happened that would have seemed remarkable to anyone else.

To me, it felt like a small piece of the life I had wanted was returning.

I was grateful for it.

I was also careful not to confuse a peaceful weekend with a permanent solution.

Diane still believed her contribution to the house mattered.

Jake was still learning to tolerate her disappointment.

And I was still learning not to measure my worth by how easily everyone else accepted my boundaries.

The difference was that I no longer felt alone in trying to change things.

Jake had begun to stand beside me.

Now we had to see whether he could keep doing that when the pressure became harder to ignore.

Click here to continue reading: PART 15: The More Jake Learned to Say No, the More I Wondered Whether Diane Had Ever Expected Her Son to Build a Life Without Her Permission

For several days, Jake seemed more comfortable making decisions without consulting his mother.
