didn't discuss his mother.

We ate together.

We cleaned the kitchen.

We talked about ordinary things.

There were moments when I felt close to him again, and I let myself enjoy them.

I didn't want to turn every quiet moment into a test.

I didn't want to spend the rest of my marriage searching his face for evidence that he had changed.

But I also didn't want to confuse a pleasant evening with a repaired problem.

Those were different things.

The following day, Jake told me he had spoken to Diane.

He didn't give me many details.

He said he had explained that she couldn't enter our bedroom in the middle of the night.

He said he had told her that we appreciated her help but needed space to live our own lives.

I listened without interrupting.

When he finished, I felt a cautious sense of relief.

“Thank you,” I said.

He looked at me as though he had expected a different response.

“That's it?”

I frowned.

“What else should I say?”

“I her,” I said.

He nodded.

For the first time in days, I felt that we might be able to take a step forward.

Not because Diane had suddenly changed.

Not because everything had been settled.

Because Jake had finally done something he had promised to do.

That mattered.

I wasn't going to dismiss it simply because it had taken him too long.

But I wasn't going to pretend that one conversation could undo years of behavior, either.

The dinner was still ahead of us.

I knew Diane might be cold.

She might make a remark about the house.

She might remind us of the help she had given.

I could not control what she would say.

I could decide how I would respond.

And I could watch whether Jake stood by the boundary he had finally agreed to set.

That was all I could do.

When the weekend arrived, I chose my clothes and got ready to leave with him.

I stood in front of the bedroom mirror for a moment, smoothing the front of my shirt.

Jake was waiting near the door.

“You ready?”

I looked at him through the mirror.

“Yes.”

I wasn't excited about the evening.

I wasn't afraid of it, either.

I was simply done pretending that keeping the peace meant making myself smaller.

I turned away from the mirror and walked toward him.

We left the house together.

For once, I didn't spend the journey rehearsing ways to keep Diane happy.

I thought about the house waiting for us at the end of the evening.

The bedroom.

The chair.

The blanket we had chosen together.

And the life I still wanted to build with my husband.

I hoped he wanted the same thing enough to protect it.

<a
