I'll see what I can do.”

My hands stopped moving.

I knew that sentence.

It was the kind of answer he gave when he wanted to end a conversation without refusing anything.

He listened for another moment.

“Yeah. I understand.”

Then he ended the call.

I waited.

He put his phone down.

“What did she want?” I asked.

“Nothing important.”

I looked at him.

He sighed.

“She wanted to talk.”

“About what?”

“Just things.”

I folded a towel and placed it on the pile.

“Jake, you don't have to tell me every detail of your conversations with her. But I don't want you pretending something isn't happening when it clearly is.”

He rubbed his face.

“She asked if we could have dinner with her sometime soon.”

I waited for him to continue.

“She misses spending time with me.”

I nodded.

“Then we can arrange dinner.”

He looked surprised.

“Really?”

“Why wouldn't we?”

“I thought you might not want to.”

I felt a small, tired sadness settle over me.

“Jake, I have never asked you to stop seeing your mother.”

“I know.”

“I've asked you to stop letting her treat me as though I don't belong in your life.”

He looked away.

I returned to the laundry.

The conversation had reached the point where I usually began explaining myself more carefully.

I would list examples.

I would soften my tone.

I would reassure him that I loved him and wanted the family to get along.

I would make the argument so gentle that the original problem sometimes disappeared inside it.

This time, I didn't.

I folded another shirt.

Jake watched me for a moment.

Then he picked up his phone again.

I wondered whether he was relieved that I hadn't argued about dinner.

Perhaps he believed that we had made progress.

In one sense, we had.

I had agreed to see Diane.

I had not demanded that Jake choose between us.

I had not turned the invitation into a fight.

But none of those things answered the question I had asked him.

Had he spoken to his mother about what happened in our bedroom?

I didn't ask again that evening.

I was tired of dragging the same question into every conversation.

The next morning, I thought about the house while I made breakfast.

I remembered the first time Jake and I had walked through it together.

We had talked about where things would go.

We had looked at the bedrooms and imagined what it would feel like to live there.

At the time, the down payment had seemed like one practical problem among many.

We had needed help.

Diane had provided it.

We had been grateful.

There had been no reason for me to assume that the help would become a permanent argument.

Now I understood why money could change the way people behaved toward one another.

It didn't always happen because someone demanded repayment.

Sometimes the debt was never written down.

Sometimes it lived in the way a person looked at you when you disagreed with them.

Sometimes it appeared in a sentence that began with a reminder of what they had done for you.

And sometimes it was in the way your husband looked at his mother before answering a simple question.

I didn't know what Diane believed the down payment entitled her to.

I only knew that she had mentioned it often enough for me to feel it whenever we disagreed.

I also knew that Jake seemed to carry the same feeling.

He didn't speak about the money as a debt.

But when his mother became upset, he behaved as though he owed her the right to be upset with us.

I couldn't change how he understood his obligation to her.

I could only decide what I would accept in my own marriage.

That evening, I stood in the bedroom doorway while Jake changed his shirt.

The chair was beside the bed.

My robe hung over its back.

I looked at it for a moment.

Then I turned toward him.

“Did you talk to your mother?”

He stopped buttoning his shirt.

“About what?”

I stared at him.

He knew.

I could see it in his face.

“About that night,” I said. “You told me you would.”

He looked down at his shirt.

“I haven't found the right time.”

I took a slow breath.

I had expected that answer.

Hearing it still hurt.

“How much time do you need?”

He didn't reply.

I nodded once.

I wasn't going to argue.

I wasn't going to tell him what words to use or how he should speak to his mother.

But I was no longer willing to pretend that his promise had been fulfilled simply because he had made it.

I picked up my robe from the chair and hung it inside the closet.

It was a small, ordinary action.

Yet I felt strangely relieved when I did it.

The chair was just a chair.

The bedroom was just a bedroom.

I didn't want every object in our house to become a reminder of what Diane had done.

I wanted to live here without thinking about her all the time.

That was why I needed Jake to understand.

Not because I wanted to win an argument.

Because I wanted our home to belong to the two of us in a way that meant something.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: When Dinner With Diane Came Up Again, I Had to Decide Whether Keeping the
