2 – The Money His Mother Contributed to Our House Had Become an Argument She Never Allowed Us to Finish

Jake didn't answer me right away.

He looked at his mother, then back at me, as though he was trying to calculate which response would cause the least trouble.

I recognized that expression.

I had seen it at birthdays, holiday dinners, and ordinary afternoons when Diane said something hurtful and then waited for everyone to pretend she hadn't.

Jake hated confrontation.

He had told me that many times.

When we were dating, I thought it meant he was thoughtful.

He listened before speaking.

He didn't turn every disagreement into a fight.

He preferred to calm things down rather than make them worse.

Those qualities had seemed like strengths.

I didn't understand how easily they could become excuses.

“Mom, you're upsetting Rachel,” he said at last.

Diane let out a short, disbelieving breath.

“That's what you're worried about?”

“I'm saying this isn't the right way to handle whatever's wrong.”

She shook her head.

“You always do this.”

“Do what?”

“You defend her before you even hear me.”

Jake rubbed the back of his neck.

I watched him struggle to find an answer.

I wanted to help him.

That embarrassed me when I thought about it later.

Even with the sheet wrapped around me and his mother blocking my clothes, some part of me was still trying to make the situation easier for him.

I was still thinking about his discomfort.

Not mine.

Diane took a step toward the bed.

“You need to remember who was there when you needed help.”

Jake's expression changed.

Only slightly, but I noticed.

He knew what was coming.

So did I.

The house.

Everything eventually came back to the house.

When Jake and I had decided to buy it, we had been excited in the uncomplicated way people are when they believe they are about to begin something good.

We walked through rooms that were empty of furniture.

We stood in the kitchen and talked about where a table might go.

We looked at the bedrooms and imagined how we would arrange them.

The house wasn't perfect.

Some things needed attention, and there were details we knew we would have to work on over time.

But it was ours.

At least, that was what I believed.

The problem had started with the down payment.

We didn't have enough money saved to cover everything required to buy the house.

Jake and I discussed our options.

We considered waiting longer.

We talked about saving more and looking again later.

Then Diane offered to help.

She would cover the down payment.

At the time, I thought it was an act of generosity.

I thanked her.

I meant it, too.

I understood that it was a significant contribution, and I didn't take it lightly.

I told myself that we would always remember what she had done for us.

I imagined that one day, when we were in a better position, we would find a meaningful way to show our appreciation.

I never imagined that the money would follow us into our bedroom.

Or that Diane would treat it as a reason she could decide what happened inside our marriage.

Looking back, I should have paid closer attention to the way she spoke about the house even before we moved in.

She didn't talk about it as something Jake and I were purchasing together.

She spoke about helping her son get a home.

She referred to the property as though her contribution had given her a permanent place in every decision we made.

At first, I brushed it aside.

I didn't want to sound ungrateful.

I didn't want Jake to feel caught between his mother and me.

And I didn't want to turn a good thing into a problem before we had even unpacked.

So I smiled.

I thanked her again.

I told myself that once we settled into the house, things would become easier.

They didn't.

Now, standing beside our bed, Diane brought up the down payment as naturally as if she were reminding Jake to lock the front door.

“I helped you get this house,” she said.

Jake closed his eyes for a moment.

“I know you did.”

“Do you?”

“Yes, Mom.”

“Then act like it.”

I stared at her.

She hadn't explained why she had come.

She hadn't told us what had upset her.

She had simply moved from one demand to another, using the money as though it answered every question.

I felt my face grow hot.

“Your help with the house doesn't give you the right to come in here like this,” I said.

Diane turned toward me.

For the first time that night, she seemed genuinely interested in what I had to say.

Not because she wanted to understand.

Because I had challenged her.

“Excuse me?”

I swallowed.

“You heard me.”

My hands were trembling beneath the sheet.

I tried to keep my voice steady.

“We appreciate what you did. But this is our home, and you can't just come into our bedroom and tell Jake to leave.”

Diane stared at me for a long moment.

Then she smiled without warmth.

“Our home?”

I said nothing.

She glanced around the room.

At the bed.

At the furniture.

At the chair where my robe still hung beyond my reach.

“You really believe that, don't you?”

The question was so simple that I almost missed the insult inside it.

I looked at Jake.

He was still sitting on the edge of the mattress.

He hadn't told her to leave.

He hadn't agreed with her, either.

He had chosen the space between us, which was where he always went when he wanted a problem to disappear without having to solve it.

I knew that about him.

I had known it for years.

I had simply hoped that marriage would change the way he handled it when the problem was me.

Diane reached for his wrist again.

“Come on.”

He pulled his arm back.

“Mom, stop grabbing me.”

She released him immediately, but her expression hardened.

“Fine. I won't touch you.”

She pointed toward the bedroom door.

“Get dressed and come downstairs.”

Jake looked exhausted.

“Why?”

“Because we need to talk.”

“Then talk here.”

“No.”

She looked at me again.

“Not in front of her.”

I felt the words settle in my stomach.

I was his wife.

Whatever she wanted to discuss with him, whatever she believed had happened, she had already decided I didn't belong in the conversation.

And Jake was letting her decide.

I wanted to ask him whether he understood what that meant.

Instead, I watched him reach for his shirt.

That small movement told me he was considering going with her.

Maybe only downstairs.

Maybe only to calm her down.

Maybe he thought that if he gave her what she wanted for a few minutes, she would stop making a scene.

I knew all the explanations he might have offered.

I had used some of them myself.

But there was one thing I couldn't explain away.

He was getting dressed while I stood beside the bed, waiting for him to defend the life we had built together.

And his mother was watching him as if she had every reason to expect obedience.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: I Had Thanked Diane for Helping Us Buy the House, Never Realizing How Much of Myself She Expected Me to Give Up

Jake didn't answer me right away.
