14 – The More I Tried to Understand My Husband’s Silence, the More I Realized That My Own Silence Had Helped Create the Distance Between Us

I had spent so many years believing I was the person who kept our family together.

It was a comforting belief.

It made the difficult days feel worthwhile.

When the children were young, I kept track of their needs.

When my husband was busy, I made sure the household continued running.

When somebody was upset, I tried to find a way to make things right.

I did not think of those responsibilities as burdens.

They were part of the life I had chosen.

But after my husband died, I began to notice something I had not wanted to see.

I had become so accustomed to managing everyone else's comfort that I rarely told anyone when I was uncomfortable myself.

I hid my worries.

I softened my disappointment.

I told people I was fine because I did not want them to feel responsible for me.

Then I became lonely and wondered why nobody had noticed.

The truth was not simple.

People could fail to notice a need even when it was clearly expressed.

But I had often made my needs difficult to see.

That realization followed me through the days at Danny's home.

I found myself thinking about the years when my children were growing up.

I remembered the times I had encouraged them to be independent.

I remembered telling them not to worry about me when I was tired.

I remembered brushing aside their offers to help because I wanted them to concentrate on their own responsibilities.

I had believed I was doing the right thing.

I wanted my children to grow into adults who could manage their lives.

I did not want them to feel that every decision had to be made around their mother.

But perhaps I had taken that lesson too far.

Perhaps I had taught them that I did not need much.

Perhaps they had come to believe that I would always find a way to manage, even when I was struggling.

I could not know how much of their behavior came from those old habits.

I only knew that I had played a part in the way our family communicated.

I wanted to change that.

Not by demanding that my children become different people overnight.

By becoming more honest about myself.

One morning, Danny asked whether I wanted to go outside with him and the boys.

I agreed.

We spent some time together while the children played.

The day was ordinary.

Nobody discussed the letter.

Nobody brought up the telephone calls.

For a while, I felt almost peaceful.

Then Danny asked whether I was still worried about my other children.

I considered giving him the answer I had given so many people over the years.

I could have said everything was fine.

I could have told him not to worry.

Instead, I said yes.

He looked at me.

I explained that I was still hurt by what had happened.

I told him I understood that people had their own responsibilities, but I had hoped my children would at least try to find a way to help.

Danny listened.

He did not tell me that I should forgive them.

He did not tell me I should remain angry.

He simply acknowledged that it had been painful.

That was what I needed.

I did not need him to choose sides.

I needed him to let me say what I felt without turning the conversation into a judgment about the rest of the family.

After a while, I admitted something else.

"I think I made it harder for them to understand me."

Danny looked thoughtful.

"How?"

I explained that I had spent years telling the children I was fine, even when I was not.

I had avoided asking for help because I did not want to become a burden.

Then, when I finally wanted to know whether they would help me, I had tested them instead of speaking honestly.

Danny was quiet.

I wondered whether he was remembering his own experiences with me.

Perhaps there had been times when he wanted to help but I had insisted I could manage alone.

Perhaps there had been times when he needed something from me and I had been too busy trying to solve another person's problem.

I wished I could go back and notice those moments.

I could not.

But I could ask him now.

"Was I like that with you when you were growing up?"

Danny looked surprised.

He took a moment before answering.

"Sometimes."

The answer hurt, though I had asked for it.

I nodded.

"Tell me."

He did not immediately begin listing old disappointments.

He seemed to be choosing his words carefully.

He said there had been times when I was so focused on making sure everyone else was all right that I did not notice he needed attention, too.

He said he had learned not to ask for much because he knew I already had plenty to do.

I looked at him.

I wanted to defend myself.

I wanted to say I had done the best I could.

Both statements were true.

Neither would change what he had experienced.

So I listened.

Danny was not trying to punish me.

He was telling me something I had asked to know.

I felt ashamed.

Not because I had been an imperfect mother.

Every parent is imperfect.

I felt ashamed because I had spent so much time wondering why my children did not understand me that I had not always considered how well I understood them.

I had thought Danny's quietness meant he was content.

Perhaps sometimes it meant he had stopped expecting me to notice.

I reached for his hand.

"I'm sorry."

He squeezed my fingers.

"I know you loved us, Mom."

I looked at him.

"But I didn't always get everything right."

He nodded.

"None of us did."

That answer helped me breathe.

He was not asking me to carry the entire burden of our family's problems.

He was asking me to see my part in them.

I could do that.

I could admit that I had made mistakes without deciding that my whole life as a mother had been a failure.

I could acknowledge the hurt my children had caused me without pretending I had never caused hurt myself.

It was uncomfortable.

It was also honest.

After our conversation, I felt closer to Danny.

Not because we had agreed about everything.

Because he had trusted me enough to tell me something difficult.

I realized how rarely we had spoken that way before.

We had talked about practical matters.

We had shared meals and family news.

We had discussed the boys and the ordinary needs of the household.

But we had not often talked about what it had felt like to grow up in our family.

I wished we had.

That evening, I sat alone and thought about my husband.

I wondered whether he had carried similar regrets.

He had loved our children.

I had never doubted that.

But love did not guarantee that he had always understood what each child needed.

Perhaps he had relied on Michael in ways that created expectations.

Perhaps he had trusted Danny to manage things because Danny rarely complained.

Perhaps he had assumed that the child who asked the fewest questions needed the fewest answers.

I did not know.

I had to be careful not to turn those possibilities into a story about what my husband had done wrong.

I was learning how easy it was to do that when someone was no longer here to speak.

I could remember what I had seen.

I could describe what I had felt.

But I could not assign motives to every silence.

That was something I needed to respect.

A few days later, I called Michael.

I told him I wanted to talk about something that had nothing to do with the letter.

He agreed.

I explained that I had been thinking about the way I had raised my children.

I told him I had sometimes hidden my worries because I did not want them to feel responsible for me.

I admitted that my decision to test them had come from fear.

Then I asked whether he had ever felt that I was difficult to approach when something was wrong.

Michael did not answer immediately.

I waited.

He said there had been times when he did not know how much I wanted him to be involved in my life.

Sometimes I seemed pleased when he handled things independently.

Other times, I seemed hurt when he did not check in more often.

He said he had not always known what I expected.

I listened.

The words were difficult to hear because they made sense.

I had wanted my children to become independent.

I had also wanted them to remain close.

I had expected them to understand when I wanted space and when I wanted company.

I had not always told them the difference.

I had assumed they would know.

That was unfair.

"I'm sorry," I told him.

Michael was quiet.

Then he said he was sorry for the way he had responded when I asked for help.

He did not offer a long explanation.

He did not try to make his decision sound better than it had been.

He simply acknowledged that he had hurt me.

I felt tears rise in my eyes.

I had wanted an apology.

But what mattered more was that we were finally speaking honestly.

I told him I did not expect him to solve everything.

I only wanted us to be able to speak before the distance between us grew too large.

He said he wanted that, too.

We did not discuss the letter.

For once, that was all right.

The conversation had mattered on its own.

When we finished speaking, I sat quietly with the telephone in my hand.

I felt neither completely healed nor completely broken.

I felt like a person who had finally admitted something she should have admitted years earlier.

I had not been the perfect mother I had imagined.

I had not always made it easy for my children to understand me.

But I had loved them.

I still did.

And I was willing to learn how to love them more honestly.

Click here to continue reading: PART 15: Michael’s Apology Gave Me Hope, but I Still Feared
