he said.

I nodded.

"And?"

He looked at me.

"I still don't understand why Dad wrote it."

I had no answer.

He continued before I could speak.

"I keep thinking there must be something I'm missing."

"That may be true," I said. "But I don't know what it is."

Michael leaned back in his chair.

He looked tired.

I wondered how many times he had read the letter since Thanksgiving.

I wondered whether he had been sleeping well.

I wanted to ask him those questions, but he was not there to talk about his sleep.

He was trying to understand his father.

"Did Dad ever make you promise to keep something from us?" he asked.

The question caught me off guard.

I thought carefully before answering.

"No, not that I remember."

"Nothing about the family?"

I shook my head.

"Nothing I can connect to this letter."

Michael looked down at the envelope.

I could tell he was disappointed.

He had hoped I would provide something he could use to make sense of the message.

I wished I could.

But I would not invent a memory simply because he needed one.

There is a particular kind of loneliness in telling someone the truth when the truth is that you do not know.

People want you to remember.

They want you to explain.

They want you to make the uncertainty smaller.

Sometimes all you can do is sit beside them and admit that you are lost, too.

I told Michael that his father had always been private about certain things.

That was not an accusation.

It was simply how I had experienced our life together.

He did not discuss every concern as soon as it entered his mind.

He sometimes waited until he had decided what to do.

I had accepted that habit because I trusted him.

Michael listened.

"Did that ever bother you?"

I considered the question.

"Sometimes."

He looked up.

I had not expected him to ask that.

I had spent years thinking of our marriage as a partnership built on trust.

It had been.

But that did not mean every part of it had been easy.

There were moments when I wished my husband would tell me more.

There were times when I wanted him to share his worries instead of carrying them alone.

I had sometimes mistaken his silence for strength.

Perhaps he had mistaken my acceptance for agreement.

I could not know.

"I didn't always understand why he kept things to himself," I told Michael. "But I believed he was trying to handle what he thought was his responsibility."

Michael looked at the paper.

"Maybe he thought I needed to handle something."

"Maybe."

The answer seemed to frustrate him.

I could see that he wanted me to go further.

But I had no right to turn a possibility into a fact.

He opened the envelope and removed the page.

He held it in front of him.

I did not ask to read it again.

I had already seen the message, and I knew that repeating the words would not make me understand what my husband had intended.

Michael studied the writing.

Then he said, "I keep wondering whether Danny knows more than he says."

I felt the familiar tightening in my chest.

I had hoped he would not return to that suspicion.

"What makes you think that?"

Michael hesitated.

"I don't know. The letter has made me question things."

I nodded slowly.

"Questioning something isn't the same as knowing it happened."

He looked at me.

"I know."

"Do you?"

The words came out more sharply than I intended.

Michael's face changed.

I regretted the tone immediately.

I was not trying to attack him.

I was trying to protect Danny from being blamed for something we did not understand.

But I could see how my question might sound like another judgment.

I took a breath.

"I'm not saying you shouldn't ask questions," I told him. "I'm saying you need to be careful about what you decide before you have an answer."

Michael looked away.

For a while, we sat in silence.

I knew he was thinking about what I had said.

I was thinking about the fact that I had done something similar to him.

When I called my children, I had already decided what their answers would mean.

I had made their choices into evidence before I understood their circumstances.

Now I was asking Michael to avoid doing that with Danny.

The difference was not as large as I wanted it to be.

I needed to admit that.

"Michael," I said, "I want to tell you something about those calls I made."

He looked at me.

I explained that I had not been completely honest when I said I was homeless.

I told him that I had wanted to see how each of my children would respond if they believed I had nowhere to go.

I did not try to make the decision sound noble.

I told him I had been frightened and lonely.

I told him I had wanted an answer about whether I could depend on my children.

Then I admitted that I had not given them the whole truth.

Michael stared at me.

For a moment, I could not read his expression.

Then he asked why I had done it.

I answered as honestly as I could.

"Because I was afraid to ask you directly whether you would help me."

He looked down at his hands.

I knew he was remembering the call.

I knew he might be angry.

He had a right to be.

I had put him in a situation without explaining what I was really asking.

I had wanted him to reveal something about himself while I concealed something about myself.

There was no way to make that fair.

"I'm sorry," I said.

Michael did not answer immediately.

He folded the letter and returned it to the envelope.

"I don't know what to say."

"You don't have to say anything right now."

He looked at me.

"Did you tell Danny the truth?"

"Yes."

"And he still let you stay?"

I nodded.

"Of course he did."

I heard the defensiveness in my own voice.

I did not mean to make Michael feel worse.

But the question reminded me of the difference between their answers.

Danny had known that I had tested the family, and he had not withdrawn his welcome.

Michael had not yet decided what to do with the knowledge.

He sat quietly.

Then he asked, "Do you think I failed you?"

I felt my heart sink.

That was not the question I had wanted him to ask.

I had wanted him to understand my loneliness, not carry the weight of a verdict.

"I think you made a choice that hurt me," I said. "But I don't want that to become the only thing I see when I look at you."

He looked at me for a long time.

I continued.

"I should have spoken honestly. You should have listened to what I needed. Both things can be true."

Michael lowered his eyes.

I did not know whether my words helped him.

I only knew that they were the most honest words I had spoken since the day I made those calls.

We sat together a little longer.

We did not solve the question of the letter.

We did not settle everything between us.

But Michael no longer seemed to be searching for a way to make me explain his father's intentions.

He had begun to understand that I could not.

When he left, he took the envelope with him.

I watched him go and felt a mixture of relief and sadness.

We had spoken honestly.

That mattered.

But honesty did not immediately repair the hurt we had caused each other.

It only gave us a place to begin.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: I Had Finally Admitted My Own Mistake, but the Question of Danny and His Father’s Letter Still Stood Between My Children

Michael called again a few days later.
