In the years before he died."

I thought about it.

My husband had worried about ordinary things.

He worried when one of the children was having a difficult time.

He worried when money was tight.

He worried about repairs that needed doing and promises he had made.

He was not a man without concerns.

But Michael seemed to be asking about something more specific.

I searched my memory.

"There were times when he was quiet," I said. "But he was always a quiet man."

Michael nodded.

"Did you ever think he was keeping something from us?"

I looked at him for a long moment.

I wanted to say no.

I wanted to protect the memory of my husband from questions that could never be answered.

But I could not honestly say that I had known everything about him.

"I thought he told me what I needed to know," I said.

Michael studied the page.

"That's not the same thing."

"No," I admitted. "It isn't."

I had never considered that distinction carefully enough.

I had believed trust meant accepting the word of the person you loved.

If my husband said something was handled, I believed him.

If he chose not to discuss a matter, I assumed it was because there was nothing useful to say.

Perhaps I had been too willing to accept those explanations.

Perhaps he had believed he was protecting us.

I could not know.

The only thing I knew for certain was that he had left a letter, and Michael had found something in it that disturbed him.

"Do you think he wanted to tell me something he couldn't say while he was alive?" Michael asked.

I felt a tightness in my chest.

"I don't know, Michael."

He looked disappointed.

I understood why.

He wanted somebody to tell him what the letter meant.

He wanted the past to become clear.

But the people who might have explained it were either unable or unwilling to speak.

His father was gone.

I did not know what he had intended.

Danny had said he knew nothing about the letter.

And Michael was left holding a message that seemed to have changed the way he understood his own family.

I wished I could give him something more useful than uncertainty.

Instead, I told him what I believed.

"Your father loved you," I said. "Whatever else there is to understand, I don't want you to forget that."

Michael's face tightened.

"I know he loved me."

He spoke quickly, almost defensively.

Then he looked down again.

"But I thought I knew him."

I did not answer.

That was the part I understood.

I had thought I knew my husband, too.

I had spent years beside him.

I knew how he took his coffee.

I knew which things irritated him and which things made him laugh.

I knew the sound of his footsteps and the way he would pause before answering a difficult question.

I knew the ordinary habits that make a person familiar.

But familiarity was not the same as knowing every truth a person carried.

I had learned that too late.

Michael folded the paper again.

He put it back in the envelope, then pressed the flap flat with his finger.

For a moment, I thought he was ready to stop talking.

Then he asked another question.

"Did Dad ever say anything about Danny?"

I glanced toward the kitchen.

Danny was helping Kayla put the remaining food away.

He appeared to be concentrating on the task, but I suspected he could hear us.

"What do you mean?" I asked.

Michael hesitated.

"I mean, did Dad ever talk about him differently?"

The question made me uncomfortable.

My children had always been different from one another.

They had different temperaments, different needs, and different ways of handling the world.

Their father had understood those differences, even when he did not always know how to talk about them.

I had sometimes worried that Danny received less attention because he asked for less.

But I had never thought of that as evidence of a secret.

"No," I said carefully. "He loved all three of you."

Michael nodded, but I could tell he was not satisfied.

I wondered whether the letter had given him a reason to revisit old memories.

A conversation that had once seemed ordinary might now look suspicious.

A decision that had seemed harmless might suddenly appear to have another meaning.

That was the danger of discovering something without understanding the whole story.

Every memory could become a clue.

Every silence could become an accusation.

I did not want Michael to begin treating his life as though it were a puzzle in which someone had deliberately hidden all the important pieces.

But I could not tell him to ignore what he had read.

I had not read the letter closely enough to know what it suggested about Danny.

And I would not invent an explanation simply to make Michael feel better.

"I think you should talk to your brother when you're ready," I said.

Michael looked toward the kitchen.

"He says he knows nothing."

"Then you may have to accept that he is telling you the truth."

Michael's expression hardened again.

"What if he isn't?"

I felt the old instinct rise in me.

I wanted to defend Danny.

I wanted to tell Michael that his brother had done nothing except open his home to our mother.

But I knew that would not answer the question.

I had no proof of anything beyond what I had witnessed.

So I said the only thing I could say honestly.

"Then you'll need something more than a feeling before you decide that."

Michael sat quietly.

I could see that he did not like my answer.

Neither did I.

I wanted certainty as much as he did.

But I had already learned what happened when I allowed fear to decide what another person must be thinking.

I had spent too much time assuming that my children did not care.

Now I was watching Michael assume that Danny might be hiding something.

Perhaps both of us were trying to protect ourselves from a truth we did not yet understand.

Danny came back into the room.

He had finished helping Kayla.

He glanced at Michael and then at the envelope.

"Are you all right?"

Michael gave a short nod.

"I will be."

Danny did not press him.

He sat down nearby.

For a moment, I thought Michael might ask him another question.

Instead, he looked at the envelope and said, "I need to understand why Dad wrote this."

Danny answered without hesitation.

"Then let's try to understand it."

Michael looked up.

"You'll help me?"

Danny seemed surprised by the question.

"If I can."

The answer was simple.

It was also generous.

Danny had no reason to take responsibility for a message he had never seen.

Yet he was willing to help his brother make sense of it.

Michael looked down at the paper.

Something in his expression softened.

Not enough to resolve the tension between them.

But enough to let the conversation continue.

I sat back in my chair.

I had wanted to know which of my children would make room for me.

Danny had answered that question through his actions.

Now I was watching him make room for something else.

His brother's uncertainty.

His brother's fear.

His brother's need to understand a father who was no longer here to explain himself.

It did not mean Danny was perfect.

It did not mean Michael's questions were unreasonable.

It meant that one of them was willing to remain in the room even when the conversation became uncomfortable.

I wished I had understood earlier how much that mattered.

The envelope remained on the table.

Michael rested his hand over it.

And for the first time since he had opened it, he stopped looking at Danny as though his brother were an obstacle.

He looked at him as though he might be someone who could help.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: When Thanksgiving Ended, I Realized the Letter Had Not Given Us Answers;
