I asked.

He did not answer immediately.

He read the page once more, as if he hoped the words might become different if he gave them another chance.

Then he looked up.

"What am I supposed to make of this?"

His voice was different now.

Not angry exactly.

More like the voice of someone who had discovered that a familiar object contained something he had never expected to find.

I wanted to ask him what he had read.

But I stopped myself.

The letter was meant for him.

Whatever his father had written, Michael needed to confront it before anyone else could explain it away.

Danny had stopped working at the counter.

Kayla remained near the stove, watching us without pretending she was unaware of what was happening.

The boys continued playing on the rug.

One of them pushed a plastic block into place, and the tower leaned dangerously before settling again.

That small sound seemed strangely loud.

Michael lowered the paper.

He looked at me as though he expected me to tell him that there had been a mistake.

I could not do that.

I had not written the letter.

I had not known what it contained.

I had only carried it because my husband had trusted me to deliver it.

"Did you know about this?" Michael asked.

"No."

He looked back at the page.

"Then why did he leave it for me?"

I shook my head.

"I wish I could tell you."

That was the truth.

I had spent years believing that the important things in our marriage were the things my husband and I had discussed.

We had raised three children together.

We had faced ordinary worries and difficult days.

We had made decisions, disagreed, and found our way forward.

I thought I knew what mattered to him.

But there had always been parts of him that remained private.

I had sometimes mistaken his quietness for certainty.

If he did not speak about something, I assumed he had already decided how to handle it.

If he said a matter was taken care of, I trusted him.

Perhaps I had trusted him too easily.

Michael read the paper again.

His eyes stopped at one particular section.

He pressed his lips together.

Then he looked across the room at Danny.

I noticed the change.

It was small, but it was unmistakable.

Until that moment, Michael had been looking at the letter as though it were a message between him and his father.

Now he seemed to be comparing what he had read with something he saw in his brother.

Danny did not move.

He waited for Michael to speak.

"What did Dad tell you?" Michael asked.

Danny looked genuinely puzzled.

"About what?"

Michael raised the page slightly.

"This."

Danny glanced at the paper but did not reach for it.

"He didn't tell me anything about a letter."

Michael's expression hardened.

"That's not what I asked."

Danny put down the cloth he had been using.

"Then ask me what you want to know."

There was no challenge in his voice.

That almost made the exchange more uncomfortable.

Michael seemed to be searching for a response that would put the conversation back on familiar ground.

I stood between them, holding my hands together.

I had wanted my children to show me what family meant to them.

Now I was watching something that went beyond my original question.

My husband's letter had introduced a problem that none of us could settle by simply deciding who was right.

I wished I could take the envelope back and return us to the meal we had been preparing.

But the paper was already in Michael's hands.

And whatever his father had written had changed something in him.

"Can I see it?" I asked.

Michael hesitated.

Then he handed me the page.

I read it slowly.

The words did not give me the explanation I wanted.

They raised questions instead.

My husband had written with the same directness I remembered from our conversations.

There was no long introduction.

No attempt to soften the message.

He had left something for Michael to understand, and the responsibility for understanding it now rested with our son.

I read the page a second time.

Then I looked at Michael.

"I didn't know he had written this."

He took the paper back.

"I know you didn't."

But he said it as though he was still trying to decide whether he believed it.

That hurt more than I expected.

I had spent my life being his mother.

I had watched him grow from a child who needed help tying his shoes into a man who believed he could manage his own affairs.

I had stood beside him through the years when he wanted advice and the years when he wanted none.

I had never expected him to believe I would deliberately hide something important from him.

Yet the letter had made him suspicious.

I could see it in the way he watched me.

Perhaps he was not suspicious of me alone.

Perhaps he was suddenly questioning everything he had assumed about his father.

I understood that feeling.

I had begun questioning those same assumptions after my husband died.

The difference was that I had learned to live with uncertainty.

Michael was only beginning.

Danny returned to the counter, though he no longer seemed interested in finishing the cleaning.

Kayla turned back toward the stove.

Nobody mentioned the food.

The smell of the meal filled the kitchen, but the warmth no longer felt comforting.

It reminded me that we had been preparing to celebrate something.

We had been trying to make an ordinary family gathering work.

Now we were standing in a room where every person seemed to be waiting for someone else to speak first.

I looked at my husband’s handwriting again.

I remembered the way he used to write notes when he wanted me to remember something.

He never wasted words.

He could be stubborn about small matters, but he was careful when he believed something truly mattered.

That was why I had kept the envelope safe.

Even without knowing what it contained, I had understood that he wanted it delivered.

I had followed his instructions.

But I had not expected the letter to make Michael look at Danny differently.

I had not expected it to bring the old questions about our family into the middle of Thanksgiving.

And I had not expected that the son who had refused to give me a place to stay would now be standing in the home of the son who had welcomed me, holding a message that seemed to have unsettled him completely.

I wanted to tell them both to sit down.

I wanted to say that their father was gone and that we could not keep asking him to explain himself.

But that would have been unfair.

If he had left a message, then perhaps he had believed it needed to be heard.

I could not decide that the questions should disappear simply because they frightened us.

Michael folded the paper.

He did it carefully this time.

Then he slipped it back into the envelope.

He did not put it away.

He held it in one hand and looked at Danny again.

The Thanksgiving meal was nearly ready.

The boys were still on the floor.

Kayla had started arranging things for the table.

Danny stood beside the counter, his expression unreadable.

And I realized that the envelope had done something I had not managed to do with all my questions.

It had forced my children to stop pretending that everything between them was simple.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: Michael Wanted an Explanation From His Brother, but Danny Would Not Pretend to Understand a Letter He Had Never Seen

I kept the envelope in my hand for a moment longer than I needed to.
