2 – The First Two Conversations Were Shorter Than I Expected, and Every Excuse Left Me With Less Hope Than Before

The first call ended before I had finished explaining why I was calling.

I had barely told my child that things had become difficult since the funeral when the conversation turned toward practical questions.

What had happened?

Why was I in that position?

Had I considered other arrangements?

The questions came quickly, one after another.

I answered as calmly as I could.

I said I needed somewhere to stay.

I said I was asking my own family before looking elsewhere.

I said I hoped it would only be temporary.

There was a pause.

I waited.

I could hear ordinary household sounds on the other end of the line.

Someone moving around.

Something being set down.

Life continuing while I stood there with the telephone against my ear, waiting to learn whether I still belonged in my child's life.

Then came the explanation.

There were commitments to consider.

There was not much room.

There were things happening that made it difficult to take on another responsibility.

I listened without interrupting.

I understood every sentence.

That was what made the answer hurt.

Nobody had to tell me they did not want me.

They only had to explain why helping me would be inconvenient.

I tried once more.

I asked whether there might be a way to make it work for a short time.

The answer did not change.

My child sounded uncomfortable, but discomfort was not the same as concern.

I could hear the desire to end the conversation.

So I made it easy.

I said I understood.

I said I would work something out.

I even thanked my child for listening.

Then the call ended.

I kept the telephone in my hand for a few seconds.

I had expected disappointment.

I had not expected to feel embarrassed.

It was as though I had walked up to a locked door and apologized for knocking.

I put the telephone down.

For a while, I did nothing.

Then I began thinking of reasons the answer might not mean what it seemed to mean.

Perhaps the timing was bad.

Perhaps I had explained myself poorly.

Perhaps there were details I did not know about my child's circumstances.

I had spent a lifetime finding generous interpretations for people I loved.

I tried to do the same thing again.

It did not make me feel better.

Still, I had two children left to call.

I waited before making the second call because I wanted my voice to sound normal.

I did not want the first conversation to influence the next one.

That was what I told myself, anyway.

The truth was that I wanted the second child to give me a different answer.

I wanted somebody to hear the same story and respond with something simple.

Come here, Mom.

We will figure it out.

You do not need to explain everything right now.

I wanted those words so badly that I could almost hear them before the telephone rang.

Then the call connected.

I explained that I had been struggling since my husband's death.

I said I needed a place to stay.

I tried to keep the story brief, as though the length of my explanation might determine whether I deserved help.

At first, the response seemed more sympathetic than the first.

There were expressions of surprise.

There were questions about how long I had been dealing with the situation.

For a moment, I thought I might have reached the right person.

Then the practical objections began.

The household had its own arrangements.

There were responsibilities that could not easily be changed.

There was no clear way to accommodate me.

I listened as the answer slowly took shape.

I had heard some of the same things before, but hearing them twice did not make them easier to accept.

I asked if I could stay temporarily.

The reply became hesitant.

A temporary arrangement could become complicated.

Nobody wanted to make a promise they might regret.

I understood that, too.

I had never believed that loving someone meant agreeing to every request without thinking.

I was not asking for an unlimited promise.

I was asking whether my child could find a little space for me while I tried to work out what came next.

Apparently, even that question was too much.

The conversation drifted toward what I might do instead.

Perhaps I could contact someone else.

Perhaps there were other possibilities.

Perhaps I could make arrangements that did not involve moving into another person's home.

I thanked my child.

Again.

I said I would manage.

Again.

Then I ended the call.

This time, I did not keep holding the telephone.

I placed it carefully on the table and stepped away.

The room seemed smaller than it had before.

I went to the kitchen and filled a glass with water.

I drank half of it, then set it beside the sink.

My hands were shaking.

I was angry, but the anger had nowhere useful to go.

I could not demand that my children open their homes to me.

They were adults.

They had every right to make decisions about their own households.

That was true.

But I had the right to feel hurt by those decisions, too.

For years, I had thought that family meant somebody would notice when you were struggling.

Now I wondered whether family sometimes meant being the person everyone assumed would be fine because you had always found a way to be fine before.

I thought about all the times I had helped my children without asking whether it was convenient.

I remembered preparing meals when they came home exhausted.

I remembered sitting awake when one of them was sick.

I remembered the small emergencies that had once seemed enormous to them.

I had never asked for repayment.

I had never kept a list.

Yet I could not stop comparing those memories with the conversations I had just had.

I wished I could stop.

I wished I could return to the version of myself who believed there was no need to count anything in a family.

But I had asked a question.

Two of my children had answered it.

I could not make their answers disappear simply because I disliked them.

I looked at the telephone again.

There was still one call left.

I had been saving it.

That was something I had not admitted even to myself.

The third child was different from the others in ways I had sometimes misunderstood.

Danny had never been the one who spoke the loudest.

He was not the child who made the biggest promises or announced every good thing he intended to do.

His life was not perfect.

He had his own responsibilities, and I knew there were times when he had to be careful about money and time.

But he had a way of listening that made me feel I did not have to hurry.

When I spoke, he usually let me finish.

When he disagreed, he did not make me feel foolish for having a different opinion.

I had noticed those things over the years.

I had also noticed that I sometimes took them for granted.

Because Danny did not complain much, I assumed he needed less from me.

Because he did not ask for attention, I sometimes gave more of it to the children who did.

Looking back, I am ashamed of that.

The quiet people in a family can become invisible, even to the people who love them.

I had no idea what Danny would say when I called.

I hoped he would help.

I feared he would offer another careful explanation.

And I worried that if he refused, I would have no excuse left for what I had discovered.

I sat down before dialing.

The photograph of my husband remained facedown on the nearby table.

I did not turn it over.

I pressed the final number.

The telephone rang.

Once.

Twice.

Then Danny answered.

His voice sounded ordinary, familiar, and unhurried.

For the first time that evening, I felt able to breathe normally.

I told him I needed to talk.

He did not ask whether I could call back later.

He did not sound irritated.

He simply asked what was wrong.

That small question nearly broke me.

I took a breath and told him the story I had told the others.

I said I had nowhere to stay.

I said I needed help.

I waited for the familiar list of reasons.

Instead, Danny became quiet.

Not impatient.

Not distracted.

Quiet in the way people become when they are trying to understand something serious.

Then he asked me where I was.

I told him.

He asked whether I was safe.

I said I was.

He asked if I had eaten.

That question caught me off guard.

I had spent the entire evening thinking about where I might sleep, and I had forgotten that I had barely touched my food.

I told him I was fine.

He did not argue with me.

He only asked me to come over.

I was so relieved that I almost began crying before the conversation ended.

Danny said there would be room for me.

He said we could talk when I arrived.

He did not ask how long I planned to stay before agreeing to let me come.

He did not ask me to prove that I had exhausted every other option.

He did not make me explain why I had called him.

He simply told me to come.

I thanked him.

He told me not to worry about thanking him.

Then he asked when I could get there.

I gave him an answer.

We agreed on the arrangements, and he ended the call only after making sure I knew what to do next.

When the telephone went silent, I sat there with both hands resting on the table.

Two doors had closed.

One had opened.

I should have felt only grateful.

Instead, I felt ashamed that I had needed to discover the difference.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: Danny Made Room for Me Without Asking for Anything, but the Look on His
