18 – I Finally Reached Out Without Offering Money or Making Excuses, and I Had to Accept That His Answer Might Not Be the One I Wanted

After sending the message, I tried to continue with my day.

I watered the plants.

I sorted the mail.

I made a list of the groceries I needed.

The phone remained on the kitchen table.

I told myself I would not keep looking at it.

I looked at it anyway.

There was no reply.

I turned the screen facedown and went outside for a while.

When I came back, I checked again.

Still nothing.

I felt the familiar disappointment rising in my chest.

Then I reminded myself why I had sent the message.

I had not sent it to obtain an immediate apology.

I had sent it because I wanted to offer a chance for an honest conversation.

My son was allowed to decide whether he was ready to have one.

I did not have to like his silence.

I did have to accept that I could not make his decision for him.

The afternoon passed.

I prepared dinner and ate at the table.

I washed the dishes and wiped down the counter.

I did not send a second message.

I had said what I needed to say.

I wanted to give him room to respond without feeling that I was trying to force him.

That evening, I sat in the living room and thought about what I would say if he called.

I imagined hearing his voice.

I imagined feeling the relief of knowing that he had not ignored me completely.

I also imagined how easy it would be to abandon the conversation I needed to have simply because I was glad to hear from him.

I knew myself well enough to recognize that danger.

For years, I had softened difficult conversations because I wanted them to end peacefully.

I would begin by explaining that something had hurt me.

Then I would notice the other person becoming uncomfortable.

I would change my tone.

I would add that I understood their side.

I would say that perhaps I had taken things the wrong way.

Sometimes that was fair.

Other times, I was simply trying to make the discomfort stop.

I did not want to do that again.

If my son responded, I would listen to him.

I would consider his explanation.

But I would not erase my feelings merely to make the conversation easier.

I had learned that peace built on pretending was not much of a peace at all.

The next morning, I woke up and checked my phone.

There was a response.

I sat on the edge of the bed and read it carefully.

My son had agreed that we could talk.

There was no long apology attached to the message.

There was no explanation of what had happened at Thanksgiving.

It was simply an agreement to speak.

I felt relief first.

Then I felt nervous.

I had wanted this opportunity.

Now I had to decide how to use it.

I did not answer with a long list of everything I wanted to discuss.

I told him I appreciated his willingness to talk and that we could arrange a time.

I kept my response brief.

Then I put the phone down.

I did not know what the conversation would bring.

He might explain that he had been trying to avoid tension with Sarah's father.

He might say that he thought I would understand.

He might admit that he had handled the situation badly.

Or he might see the situation differently from me.

I needed to be ready to hear whichever explanation he offered.

I also needed to remember that hearing his explanation did not require me to agree with it.

That afternoon, I returned to the house paperwork.

I wanted the financial questions to remain clear in my mind, separate from the emotional conversation I was preparing to have.

I reviewed the notes I had made and checked that the relevant documents were together.

I had no intention of threatening my son with the house.

I did not want him to believe that the money had been given as a way to control his choices.

But I also did not want to avoid discussing the financial arrangement simply because the subject was uncomfortable.

It was too important to leave vague.

I needed to understand my position.

I needed to know what the documents established.

And I needed to make sure that any future financial help was based on clear expectations rather than assumptions.

Those matters could be discussed calmly.

They did not need to become weapons in a family argument.

I put the folder away.

Then I went into the kitchen and made tea.

I sat by the window and watched the light fade.

I thought about how much had changed since the afternoon in the grocery store.

At the time, I had been holding a pumpkin and staring at my phone.

I had believed that sending one short reply would protect me from humiliation.

It had protected me from an argument that day.

It had not solved the problem.

For weeks, I had tried to find a way to feel secure without having to speak about what had happened.

I had reviewed documents.

I had changed my habits.

I had learned to stop offering money automatically.

Those things mattered.

But none of them could replace an honest conversation with my son.

I was glad I had finally reached out.

I was also glad I had done so without offering anything.

No gift.

No financial help.

No promise to make the situation easier for him.

Just an invitation to talk.

That was all I could offer at that moment.

The rest would depend on what we were both willing to say.

I finished my tea and washed the cup.

Then I checked my calendar and made sure I had time available for the conversation.

I did not know whether it would resolve anything.

I did not know whether my son would understand why I had been hurt.

I only knew that I was finally approaching the problem in a different way.

I was no longer trying to purchase peace.

I was asking for honesty.

Click here to continue reading: PART 19: I Prepared to Tell My Son the Truth About
