9 – I Made Thanksgiving Dinner for One, and for the First Time I Stopped Pretending That Being Needed Was the Same as Being Loved

Thanksgiving morning arrived without a message from my son.

I woke up before my alarm, as I usually did on holidays.

For a few seconds, I forgot what had happened.

Then I remembered the message, the grocery store, and the word I had sent back.

Okay.

I lay still, looking at the ceiling.

I had hoped that by morning I would feel less disappointed.

Instead, I felt the same quiet ache I had been carrying for days.

I got out of bed anyway.

The house was cool, and the kitchen floor felt cold beneath my feet.

I switched on the light and put water on for coffee.

The pumpkin sat on the little table near the window.

Its orange skin looked brighter in the morning light than it had the night before.

I stood beside it for a moment.

Then I went to the refrigerator and took out the food I had decided to prepare.

I wasn't going to make a large meal.

There was no reason to cook enough for a dozen people when I was eating alone.

I had vegetables, potatoes, and enough ingredients to make something simple.

I started with the potatoes.

As I peeled them, I found myself thinking about my son's house.

I imagined the kitchen there, the counters, and the space where everyone would gather while dinner was being prepared.

I wondered whether Sarah had planned the menu.

I wondered whether her father would sit at the head of the table.

Then I caught myself.

I was building a picture of a gathering I had not been invited to attend.

I put the peeler down and rinsed my hands.

There was no benefit in making myself a spectator to a day I was trying to get through.

I returned to the potatoes.

The work was ordinary.

That helped.

I chopped the vegetables, heated a pan, and listened to the familiar sounds of cooking.

For years, Thanksgiving had meant preparing more than we needed because I liked seeing people go back for another helping.

I had measured the success of the day by whether everyone seemed comfortable.

Was there enough food?

Did anyone need another plate?

Was somebody sitting alone?

I had spent so much time watching everyone else that I rarely stopped to ask whether I was enjoying myself.

I had thought that was simply what mothers did.

Some of it was.

But I had taken that habit into every part of my life.

I had learned to notice everyone else's needs before they spoke.

I had become less practiced at noticing my own.

By late morning, the food was ready.

I put it on a plate and carried it to the table.

The pumpkin was only a few feet away.

I could see the place where its skin had flattened slightly against the counter during the drive home from the grocery store.

I smiled at the sight of it.

Not because I was suddenly happy about the holiday.

I smiled because I had finally stopped treating the pumpkin as evidence that I had been foolish.

I had bought it because I thought I would be celebrating with my family.

That had been a kind intention.

The fact that things had changed did not make the intention wrong.

I sat down and began eating.

The house was quiet.

I could hear the refrigerator humming in the kitchen.

Outside, a car passed, then another.

I ate slowly.

Halfway through the meal, I noticed that I was no longer imagining what everyone else was doing.

I was thinking about the food in front of me.

It tasted good.

That was enough for the moment.

After I finished, I washed my plate and put away the leftovers.

I did not leave the kitchen messy because I was sad.

I did not force myself to clean every corner because I needed to feel productive.

I simply did what needed doing.

Then I made another cup of coffee and sat by the window.

I had expected the day to feel like a punishment.

It did not.

It felt lonely in places.

There was a difference.

Loneliness was the absence of company.

Punishment was what I had been doing to myself by repeatedly imagining that I deserved to be left out.

I had not deserved that message.

I also did not have to spend the entire day suffering because of it.

I thought about calling my son.

The urge came and went.

I wanted to hear his voice.

I wanted to know whether he had thought about me that morning.

I wanted to believe that the message had been an unfortunate mistake rather than a sign of something deeper.

But I knew that calling him simply because I could not bear the silence would put me back in the same position.

I would be reaching for reassurance before I had decided what I needed to say.

So I stayed where I was.

I drank my coffee.

I watched the light move across the floor.

I allowed myself to miss my son without turning that feeling into a reason to abandon my boundaries.

That was harder than I expected.

Love did not disappear because I had finally admitted that something was wrong.

I still remembered his childhood.

I still remembered the times he had been proud of himself and wanted me to know.

I remembered the ordinary conversations that had once made me feel close to him.

Those memories were real.

So was the hurt I felt now.

I did not have to choose one truth and deny the other.

In the afternoon, I took a walk around the neighborhood.

The weather was pleasant, and a few people were outside with their families.

I saw a woman carrying a covered dish toward a car.

A man was helping a child climb into the back seat.

I looked away before I could begin imagining their conversations.

I was not angry with them.

I was simply aware of what I had hoped my own day would look like.

When I returned home, I checked my phone.

There was no message from my son.

I put it back in my purse.

I did not feel the same urgency I had felt earlier in the week.

I still wanted him to reach out.

But I was beginning to understand that wanting something did not mean I had to chase it.

I could leave room for him to make a choice.

I could also make my own.

That evening, I put the remaining food into containers.

I cleaned the counter and moved the pumpkin a little farther from the window so it would not be in direct sunlight.

Then I turned off the kitchen light.

Thanksgiving had not gone the way I wanted.

I would not pretend otherwise.

But I had made it through the day without sending another message, offering another favor, or trying to purchase a place in a gathering where I had been told I was not welcome.

It was a small victory.

No one else would have noticed it.

I noticed.

Before going to bed, I looked at my phone one more time.

Still nothing.

I felt the disappointment.

Then I set the phone down and went to sleep.

For the first time since the message arrived, I was not waiting for the next morning to bring me an apology.

I was ready to let the morning belong to me.

<a
