6 – The Silence From My Son Hurt More Than His Message, Until I Realized How Much of My Life Had Been Spent Waiting for His Approval

I thought that once I had taken practical steps, I would feel better.

I didn't.

The days after I sought advice were surprisingly ordinary.

I woke up.

I made coffee.

I checked the mail.

I cooked meals and folded laundry.

The only difference was that I no longer moved through those routines believing that everything in my family would eventually settle into the shape I wanted.

I had questions now.

And I was learning to live with them without immediately trying to answer them through another act of generosity.

My phone remained quiet.

I told myself that I was not waiting for a call.

Then I caught myself looking at the screen while standing in line at a store.

I checked it while the kettle heated.

I checked it before bed.

It was embarrassing how quickly an old habit returned.

I had spent years being available to my son.

If he needed advice, I answered.

If he needed help, I listened.

If he had a problem, I tried to find a solution.

I had convinced myself that being dependable was one of the best things a mother could be.

I still believed that.

But dependability had become something else when I began to feel that my own needs were always less important.

I was available when my son needed something.

I was expected to be understanding when he made a decision that hurt me.

And when I needed consideration from him, I found myself wondering whether asking for it would make me a burden.

That was not the kind of relationship I had wanted.

I thought about the Thanksgiving message again.

He had not asked whether I was planning to attend.

He had not explained what had happened between Sarah's father and me.

He had not told me that he disagreed with the decision.

He had simply passed the message along.

I tried to imagine what I would have done if the situation had been reversed.

If someone had told me that my son should not be welcome at a family gathering, I would have wanted to know why.

I would have considered his feelings.

I would have spoken to him directly.

I would not have treated his exclusion as an ordinary scheduling problem.

That was what hurt.

It was not only that I had been left out.

It was that my son had not seemed to understand why he should care.

I had no way of knowing what he was thinking.

Perhaps he believed I would be happier staying home.

Perhaps he thought he was avoiding an argument.

Perhaps he had simply accepted Sarah's father's preference without thinking very deeply about it.

I could imagine all kinds of explanations.

But I could not make those explanations into facts.

I had to deal with what he had actually done.

One afternoon, I found myself looking through an old drawer for a pen.

Inside were birthday cards, folded notes, and a few small things I had kept because they reminded me of earlier years.

I found a card my son had given me long ago.

I did not sit down and read every word.

I held it for a moment, remembering how pleased I had been to receive it.

There had been a time when a small gesture from him could make my entire day.

I had never needed expensive gifts.

I had wanted to feel remembered.

That desire had not disappeared as he grew older.

If anything, I had become more careful about admitting it.

I did not want him to feel responsible for my happiness.

I did not want to be the mother who demanded constant attention.

So I told myself that I was fine with less contact.

I told myself that adults had busy lives.

I told myself that giving him space was another form of love.

Some of that was true.

But I had also used those explanations to avoid admitting when I felt neglected.

It was easier to say I expected nothing than to acknowledge that I still hoped for kindness.

I put the card back in the drawer.

Then I closed it.

I could love the boy my son had been without pretending that every choice he made as an adult was acceptable.

I could remember the good moments without using them to excuse the present.

And I could acknowledge my own mistakes without accepting responsibility for every hurtful decision he made.

That afternoon, I wrote a few things on a sheet of paper.

I wrote down the financial questions I still needed to resolve.

I wrote down the boundaries I wanted to maintain.

I wrote down one sentence that I had never quite allowed myself to believe.

I did not have to pay to deserve a place in my son's life.

I looked at the words for a long time.

They seemed obvious.

That was what made them painful.

I had lived as if I needed to prove my usefulness before I could ask to be considered.

I had done it with money.

I had done it with time.

I had done it with all the small things I remembered and all the favors I offered before anyone had to ask.

I had wanted to be indispensable.

Perhaps that was why the Thanksgiving message had hurt so much.

I had helped make the house possible, yet I had been treated as someone whose presence could be negotiated away.

I folded the paper and placed it in the drawer beside the folder.

I did not need to look at it every day.

I only needed to remember what it said.

The following morning, I went grocery shopping again.

This time, I bought only what I needed.

I did not wander through the aisles looking for things my son might like.

I did not pick up a special dessert because I imagined taking it to his house.

I did not buy extra food in case someone stopped by.

It was an ordinary shopping trip.

And I noticed how strange it felt to make decisions without picturing everyone else's preferences first.

At the checkout, I paid for my groceries and carried the bags to my car.

The pumpkin from the earlier trip was still at home.

I had not cut it open or thrown it away.

It had become a quiet reminder of how quickly a plan could change.

I drove home and put my groceries away.

Then I made lunch.

I was learning that I could have a day that belonged to me without needing to turn it into a statement about my son.

I did not have to prove I was independent by refusing to love him.

I did not have to prove I was hurt by withdrawing every kind feeling I had ever held.

I could simply stop making my own life revolve around whether he approved of me.

That evening, I sat by the window and watched the light fade from the street.

I wondered whether he had noticed that I had not sent another message.

I wondered whether he had assumed my short reply meant everything was fine.

The thought made me uneasy.

Maybe he believed that because I had not argued, I had not been hurt.

Maybe he had taken my silence as agreement.

I could not know.

But I knew I had no obligation to keep explaining the same pain until he was ready to hear it.

If we were going to have an honest conversation, I wanted it to be one in which he listened as well as spoke.

I did not want to deliver a speech designed to make him feel guilty.

I wanted him to understand that his decision had affected me.

And I wanted to hear whether he understood why.

Until then, I would continue taking care of the matters I could control.

I would keep the documents safe.

I would seek clarification where necessary.

I would not make another financial commitment simply because someone asked.

That was enough for one day.

When I went to bed, I left my phone on the dresser instead of beside my pillow.

I did not want the first thing I reached for in the morning to be a message that might not exist.

For the first time since Thanksgiving became a problem, I allowed myself to sleep without waiting for an answer.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: I Had Always
