13 – I Stopped Checking My Phone for an Apology and Started Asking Myself What Kind of Relationship I Was Willing to Accept

The first thing I noticed was how much time I had been spending waiting.

I had not thought of it that way before.

I told myself I was busy.

I told myself I was giving my son space.

But every time my phone lit up, I looked at it with a little hope that I had tried to hide from myself.

A delivery notification could disappoint me.

A message from a friend could disappoint me.

Even a reminder about an ordinary appointment could make me feel foolish for expecting something else.

I was tired of that feeling.

One morning, I carried my coffee to the kitchen table and left my phone in the bedroom.

It was a small change.

I wanted to see whether I could get through breakfast without checking for a message that might not come.

I could.

I ate my toast.

I finished my coffee.

I washed my plate and wiped the crumbs from the table.

Nothing terrible happened because I had not looked at my screen.

I almost laughed at myself.

For days, I had treated my son's silence as if it were an emergency I was responsible for solving.

It was not.

It was painful, but it was not mine to fix alone.

I returned to the bedroom and picked up my phone.

There were a few ordinary notifications.

Nothing from him.

I put the phone away again.

I had decided not to chase him, and I needed to practice what that meant.

It did not mean pretending I no longer cared.

It did not mean refusing to answer if he called.

It meant allowing him to take responsibility for his side of the relationship.

I had spent years making sure there was always a way for him to reach me.

I had answered quickly.

I had offered help before he finished explaining the problem.

I had tried to remove the discomfort from his life whenever I could.

Perhaps I had made it too easy for him to assume that I would always be there, no matter how he treated me.

I could not know whether that was what had happened.

But I could see that my own behavior had become automatic.

And automatic generosity was not always the same as thoughtful generosity.

That afternoon, I went through my personal papers again.

I wanted to make sure everything connected to the house remained organized.

I had already sought advice, and I understood that I needed to rely on the actual terms of the arrangement rather than my feelings about it.

I did not want to make a decision based on anger.

I also did not want to avoid a decision because I was afraid my son might be upset.

Both reactions could lead me in the wrong direction.

I made sure the documents were together.

Then I returned them to the drawer.

I had done what I could for the moment.

The rest would require further clarification, not another hour of staring at the same pages.

I went into the living room and opened a book.

For a while, I read without thinking about Thanksgiving.

Then a line in the story reminded me of something my son had said when he was younger.

I closed the book.

The memory came back clearly.

He had once called me simply to tell me about a good day.

There had been no request.

No problem to solve.

No expense to discuss.

He had just wanted to share something with me.

I remembered how happy that call had made me.

I had carried the memory for years because it reminded me of a time when our connection felt uncomplicated.

I missed that.

I missed being someone my son wanted to talk to, even when he had nothing to ask for.

That was the part I had been reluctant to admit.

The money was important because it represented a significant part of my future.

But the deeper hurt was that I had begun to wonder whether my usefulness had become more important than my company.

I did not want to believe that.

I also could not make the possibility disappear by refusing to think about it.

I put the book on the table.

Then I made myself a promise.

If my son contacted me, I would listen to what he had to say.

I would not punish him for taking time to reach out.

But I would not immediately smooth everything over just because hearing his voice made me feel better.

I would tell him the truth.

His message had hurt me.

I had wanted him to speak to me directly.

I had wanted him to consider my feelings before accepting someone else's decision about whether I could attend a family gathering.

And I wanted our relationship to be about more than the help I could provide.

I did not need to rehearse a speech.

I only needed to remember those points.

The following morning, I went grocery shopping.

I bought the things I needed for the week.

I did not purchase anything extra for my son.

That might sound petty to someone who had never spent years anticipating another person's needs.

To me, it was a way of breaking a habit.

I was not refusing him something he had asked for.

I was simply no longer inventing reasons to give.

At the checkout, I paid for my groceries and carried them to the car.

The sky was clear, and the parking lot was busy.

I loaded the bags into the trunk and drove home.

It was an ordinary morning.

I wanted more ordinary mornings like that.

I wanted my life to contain things that were not connected to the house, the message, or the silence afterward.

I wanted to enjoy a meal without wondering what my son was doing.

I wanted to make plans without imagining whether he might need me.

I wanted to be generous because I felt generous, not because I was afraid that refusing would make me less important.

Those were not unreasonable wishes.

They were simply things I had neglected.

That evening, I sat at the kitchen table and looked at the empty space where the pumpkin had been.

I had finally put it outside with the yard waste.

The counter looked cleaner without it.

For weeks, I had kept the pumpkin in sight because I thought I needed to remember what had happened.

Now I understood that remembering did not require keeping every reminder in front of me.

I could carry the lesson without carrying the object.

I could love my son without waiting for him to prove that I mattered.

And I could leave the next step to him without deciding that the relationship was over.

Before bed, I checked my phone.

Still nothing.

I set it on the dresser.

Then I turned off the light.

I was not giving up on my son.

I was giving up on the idea that I had to do all the work of keeping us close.

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: I Began Preparing for the
