7 – I Had Always Believed My Generosity Would Bring Us Closer, but Now I Needed to Know What Boundaries Would Cost Me

A few days later, I returned to the question of the house.

I had allowed myself some distance from the original message, but I had not forgotten what it meant.

I knew that my financial position needed to be understood independently of my feelings.

I also knew that the way I had handled the situation in the past could not continue unchanged.

The house was still my son's home.

I had helped him buy it because I wanted him and Sarah to have somewhere secure to live.

That desire had not disappeared.

But I could no longer assume that wanting the best for him meant I had to keep providing whatever support might be needed.

There was a difference between helping someone establish a home and becoming responsible for every consequence of their choices.

I had blurred that difference.

I had done so gradually, through decisions that each seemed reasonable at the time.

A little help here.

An extra expense there.

A promise made because I did not want my son to worry.

I had not kept a careful record of the emotional cost.

I had only measured whether I could afford the next request.

Now I was trying to change that.

I went through the folder again and made sure the papers were arranged in the order I needed.

I wanted to keep everything together.

I did not want an important detail to get lost because I was upset or distracted.

The house had become more than a financial matter to me.

It had exposed the difference between what I believed our relationship meant and what I could actually expect from it.

I had assumed that my generosity would be remembered.

I had assumed that my presence would be valued.

I had assumed that family decisions would include me when they affected me.

Those assumptions had not all been spoken aloud.

I had simply carried them into the arrangement.

That was something I needed to own.

I could not blame my son for failing to understand every expectation I had never expressed.

But I could hold him responsible for the way he communicated with me.

He could have spoken to me directly.

He could have explained the situation.

He could have told me what he wanted rather than presenting another person's preference as a decision I had no choice but to accept.

I could recognize that without turning him into a villain.

I was his mother.

I knew he was capable of kindness.

I also knew that being capable of kindness did not mean he would always choose it.

That was a difficult thing to accept about someone I loved.

For years, I had tried to preserve the best version of my son in my mind.

When he disappointed me, I looked for an explanation that made the disappointment easier to bear.

I told myself he was busy.

I told myself he was stressed.

I told myself that once things settled down, he would remember to call.

Sometimes those explanations were probably fair.

But I had also used them to avoid dealing with patterns that were becoming painful.

I could not keep doing that.

I wanted to see my son clearly.

Not as the child I had raised.

Not as the person I hoped he would become.

As the adult he was choosing to be now.

That did not mean I had to stop hoping for better.

It meant I had to stop treating hope as evidence.

That afternoon, I reviewed the notes I had made after seeking advice.

I was careful not to turn possibilities into promises.

I still needed to understand the actual terms of the arrangement and what those terms meant.

I did not want to assume that my contribution gave me ownership or a right to reverse the transaction.

I would not make that claim without a proper basis.

The money had been given with a purpose, but the purpose alone did not tell me what I could legally demand.

I needed to respect that distinction.

At the same time, I began thinking about the other kinds of support I had been providing.

There were future requests I had not yet received.

There were expenses I had sometimes offered to cover before my son even mentioned them.

There were occasions when I had made myself available because I feared that saying no would create distance between us.

Those decisions were mine.

I could change them.

I did not need a legal opinion to stop volunteering money.

I did not need my son's permission to make my own budget a priority.

And I did not need to prove that he had behaved badly enough before I was allowed to set limits.

The thought gave me a measure of relief.

For so long, I had treated boundaries as something I could establish only after another person had crossed a line.

I had waited until I was hurt.

Then I had tried to explain why the hurt mattered.

Now I understood that a boundary could exist before the next problem arrived.

I could decide what I was comfortable giving.

I could decide what questions needed to be answered before I committed money.

I could decide not to take responsibility for an expense simply because I had the ability to pay it.

Those decisions did not require a family argument.

They required honesty with myself.

I took out a notebook and began writing down my own financial priorities.

I did not need to share the details with my son.

I needed to know what I could reasonably afford and what I wanted to preserve for my own future.

I had spent years thinking about what would make his life easier.

It was time to give my own security the same attention.

The work was not dramatic.

There were numbers to check and questions to consider.

I made sure I understood my regular expenses.

I thought about the money I wanted to keep available for unexpected needs.

I considered what I would regret giving away if my circumstances changed.

It was not selfish to ask those questions.

It was responsible.

When I finished, I closed the notebook and sat back.

I felt something I had not felt for several days.

Not happiness.

Not forgiveness.

A little steadiness.

I was no longer waiting for the Thanksgiving situation to tell me what to do with my life.

I was making decisions based on what I needed.

The next time my son asked for help, I would not answer automatically.

I would listen.

I would consider the request.

I would decide whether it was something I genuinely wanted and could afford to do.

And if I did not want to help, I would say so without writing a long apology.

I could already imagine how uncomfortable that conversation might be.

I knew my son might be surprised.

He might wonder why I had changed.

He might think I was punishing him for Thanksgiving.

I could not control how he interpreted my decision.

I could only be honest about the reason.

I was changing because the old arrangement had left me feeling hurt and uncertain.

I was changing because I needed to take my own future seriously.

And I was changing because I did not want financial help to become the main language through which I expressed love.

There were other ways to be a mother.

I could listen.

I could offer advice when he wanted it.

I could celebrate his achievements without paying for them.

I could tell him when I was proud of him.

I could also disagree with him.

I could tell him when he had hurt me.

And I could allow him to solve problems that belonged to him.

That evening, I put the notebook away.

I checked the house folder one more time and returned it to its place.

Then I went into the kitchen and looked at the pumpkin.

Its skin had begun to lose some of its shine.

I picked it up and examined the flattened side.

It was still perfectly ordinary.

I decided I would use it as a decoration for myself, not as a reminder of a gathering I had lost.

I placed it on the small table near the window.

The decision was simple.

I did not need every part of my life to be organized around what had gone wrong.

I could acknowledge the hurt and still make room for ordinary things.

Before bed, I checked my phone.

There was no message from my son.

I put it down without opening the conversation.

I was still his mother.

I still loved him.

But I was beginning to understand that loving him did not require me to remain available for every disappointment he might cause.

I could leave the door open to a better relationship without continuing to pay for the privilege of standing outside it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: Thanksgiving Was Getting Closer, and I Had to Decide Whether I
