10 – I Used to Believe That a Mother’s Job Was to Make Every Problem Smaller, Until I Saw How Much of My Own Life Had Disappeared

I began noticing small things I had stopped doing.

I had once enjoyed sitting in the garden with a cup of tea.

For months, I had spent more time indoors with my phone nearby, waiting for Benjamin to call.

I used to read for an hour in the afternoon.

Lately, I had struggled to finish even a few pages because my attention kept returning to his problems.

I had also become careless about my own plans.

If Benjamin mentioned that he might need something, I would postpone a purchase or reconsider an expense before he had even asked me for money.

I had been preparing to help him before I knew whether help was needed.

That realization made me uncomfortable.

I had thought I was being generous.

I had not noticed how much of my life had begun to revolve around anticipation.

I decided to change one small thing.

The following morning, I took my tea outside.

The garden was not large, but I had always liked it.

There were a few plants I tended myself and a chair that had become slightly worn from years of use.

I sat down and listened to the birds.

My phone remained inside.

At first, I thought about it constantly.

I wondered whether Benjamin might call.

I wondered whether he might need something.

Then I reminded myself that I could return to the house if I heard the telephone ringing.

I did not need to carry it everywhere.

I stayed outside until my tea was finished.

Nothing remarkable happened.

The sky remained clear.

The plants needed watering.

A neighbor passed by and waved.

I returned the greeting.

It was an ordinary morning.

I had almost forgotten how pleasant ordinary could be.

Later, I watered the plants and went inside.

The phone was quiet.

I felt no disappointment when I saw that there were no messages.

That was new.

I was beginning to understand that my day did not have to be judged by whether Benjamin contacted me.

I could love him and still have a life that continued when he was not present.

The thought seemed obvious.

It had taken me a long time to reach it.

That afternoon, I opened the notebook.

I wanted to review the financial records one more time, not because I expected to discover anything new, but because I needed to understand the difference between helping my son and making myself responsible for his entire situation.

I looked at the yearly total.

The number was still there.

$93,600.

I had checked it often enough.

There was no reason to keep reopening the same pages.

I closed the notebook.

Then I placed it back in the drawer.

I had begun to see that I could not make the past feel better by examining it endlessly.

The money had been spent.

Some of it had eased difficulties Benjamin was facing.

Some of it might have been avoidable if I had asked more questions or taken more time.

I could not know exactly how everything would have turned out if I had acted differently.

I only knew that I had made those decisions with the understanding I had at the time.

I did not need to hate myself for them.

I needed to learn from them.

That evening, Benjamin called.

I was sitting in the sitting room when the phone rang.

I answered and greeted him.

He asked what I had been doing.

I told him about the garden.

He seemed mildly surprised that I had spent the morning outside.

I could not tell whether he found it unusual or simply had not expected me to mention it.

We talked for a few minutes.

He told me a little about his week.

I listened.

I asked whether he had made progress with the difficulty he had described during our previous call.

He said he was still working on it.

I told him I hoped things would improve.

There was a pause.

Then he asked whether I could help him with something.

My stomach tightened.

I had expected the question eventually.

Still, hearing it made my body react before my mind had time to catch up.

I asked him to explain what he needed.

He began describing the situation.

I listened without agreeing to anything.

When he finished, I asked for time to think.

He went quiet.

I could almost hear the old conversation waiting to happen.

In the past, I would have offered to solve the problem before he had to sit with the uncertainty.

This time, I did not.

"I need to look at my own expenses first," I told him.

"All right," he replied.

His answer was brief.

I could not tell whether he understood my position or merely wanted to end the conversation.

I did not ask.

We spoke for another moment before saying goodbye.

After the call, I sat quietly.

I had not made a decision about the request.

I had only asked for time.

Yet I felt as though I had crossed a line I had been afraid to approach for years.

I went to the kitchen and opened the drawer.

I took out the notebook and looked at the total again.

Then I began considering the request in practical terms.

What would it mean for my own savings?

What expenses did I have coming up?

Would helping him place me in a difficult position later?

I wrote down the questions.

I did not answer them immediately.

I wanted to give myself time to think without being influenced by the sound of Benjamin's voice or the discomfort of disappointing him.

I put the paper inside the notebook and closed it.

I would consider the request when I was ready.

I would not let guilt make the decision for me.

The next morning, I went outside with my tea again.

I left the phone on the kitchen counter.

I sat in the garden and watched the light move across the plants.

For the first time in a long while, I did not feel that I was neglecting someone by taking time for myself.

I was simply living my own life.

I could not know whether Benjamin would understand that change.

I hoped he would.

But I no longer believed that his understanding was a condition I had to satisfy before I could make reasonable choices.

I had spent years trying to make every problem smaller for him.

Now I was learning that some problems belonged to the people facing them.

And some responsibilities belonged to me.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: When Benjamin Asked Me for
