I told him.

My answer sounded small.

I worried that he might hear it as indifference.

I wanted to explain that I cared deeply about what happened to him.

But I did not want to turn a simple sentence into another promise.

"I'll be all right," he said.

"I hope so, sweetheart."

We spoke for another minute.

Then he ended the call.

I stood beside the counter, looking at the phone.

I felt a familiar mixture of relief and sadness.

I was glad he had called.

I was disappointed that the conversation had once again drifted toward his difficulties without returning to the hurt between us.

I also felt something else.

I felt that I had managed to remain present without taking over.

That mattered more than I expected.

I returned to cleaning the kitchen.

The cloth was damp in my hand.

The counter smelled faintly of lemon polish.

For a moment, I remembered the evening I had dressed for dinner and waited for the clock to reach seven.

The memory still hurt.

But I was beginning to see that I did not have to spend every day trying to make that evening mean something different.

It had happened.

Benjamin had sent the message.

I had stayed home.

And I had begun changing the way I responded to him afterward.

Those were the facts.

I could not force him to understand them the way I did.

I could only decide what they meant for my own choices.

That evening, I ate at the kitchen table.

I did not set out my phone beside my plate.

I left it on the counter and enjoyed my meal.

Afterward, I washed the dishes and put them away.

Then I sat with a book until I became sleepy.

Before bed, I checked my phone once.

There was no new message.

I put it down without sending one myself.

The silence was still uncomfortable.

But I was learning that discomfort did not always mean I needed to do something.

Sometimes I could simply let it be there.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: I Used to Believe That a Mother’s Job Was to Make Every Problem Smaller, Until I Saw How Much of My Own Life Had Disappeared

The days after my decision passed quietly.
