7 – I Had Expected an Apology for the Dinner Message, but What I Needed Most Was to Understand Why I Had Been Afraid to Ask for One

As the days passed, I found myself returning to the evening of the dinner.

Not constantly.

Not every hour.

But often enough that I knew I had not finished dealing with it.

I could still picture the navy dress hanging over the chair.

I could still remember the way I had smoothed its front before leaving the bedroom.

I had been looking forward to a simple evening with Benjamin.

That was all I had wanted.

I had not expected special treatment.

I had not expected him to thank me for the money I had provided.

I had expected to be welcome.

The more I thought about it, the more I realized that I had been avoiding the question that mattered most.

Why had I been so reluctant to ask him what happened?

I had asked myself whether I had done something wrong.

I had wondered whether his wife disliked me.

I had tried to imagine what might have been said in the townhouse before the message arrived.

But I had not asked Benjamin directly why he had spoken to me that way.

Part of me was afraid of the answer.

Another part was afraid that asking would make things worse.

I had spent years trying to keep our relationship peaceful.

I had learned to soften my opinions, overlook careless remarks, and move past disappointments without making them into arguments.

Sometimes that had been sensible.

Families could not survive if every hurt became a confrontation.

But I had also used peace as an excuse to remain silent when something genuinely mattered to me.

I had confused avoiding an argument with resolving a problem.

They were not the same.

One afternoon, I sat down at the kitchen table with my phone beside me.

I considered calling Benjamin.

I wanted to hear his voice.

I also wanted to ask about the dinner.

I rehearsed the conversation in my head.

I would ask him why he had told me not to come.

I would explain that the message had hurt me.

I would try not to accuse him of anything I could not prove.

Then I would listen to his answer.

It sounded reasonable.

Still, I could not bring myself to press his number.

I put the phone down and stood up.

I went to the cupboard and took out a glass.

I filled it with water and drank slowly.

I was not afraid of speaking to my son because I believed I had done something wrong.

I was afraid that he might dismiss what I said.

I was afraid that he might tell me I was making too much of it.

And I was afraid that I would respond the way I always had.

I would apologize for being hurt.

I would reassure him that I understood.

I would make the conversation easier for him and then sit alone afterward, wondering why I had not said what I meant.

That possibility stopped me.

I returned to the table.

I did not call.

Instead, I wrote down what I wanted him to understand.

I kept the words simple.

I wrote that I had been hurt by the message.

I wrote that I had been looking forward to seeing him.

I wrote that I did not expect to be included in every plan, but I did expect to be spoken to with consideration.

I read the lines several times.

They were not cruel.

They were not demanding.

They did not mention the money.

I had deliberately left the money out because I did not want the conversation to become an argument about whether he owed me something in return.

My hurt was real without the financial history.

The message had been hurtful because it came from my son.

That was enough.

I folded the paper and placed it beside the notebook.

I was not sure whether I would use it.

Writing the words had helped me understand what I wanted to say, even if I never said them aloud.

Later that day, Benjamin called.

I was sitting in the sitting room with a book on my lap.

I answered after the second ring.

We exchanged greetings.

He asked how I was doing.

I told him I was well.

He spoke briefly about his week.

I listened and answered when appropriate.

For a few minutes, I waited for him to mention the dinner.

He did not.

I felt the familiar disappointment settle in my chest.

Then I remembered the paper on the kitchen table.

I did not want to spend another week waiting for him to bring up a subject he might never choose to discuss.

So I asked.

"Benjamin, can I ask you something about the other evening?"

He was quiet for a moment.

"What about it?"

I looked at the book in my lap.

I had marked my place with a small piece of paper.

I took a breath.

"I was hurt by the message telling me not to come."

I stopped there.

I wanted to explain everything at once.

I wanted to tell him how carefully I had prepared for the dinner and how foolish I had felt sitting in my kitchen afterward.

But I did not need to give him every detail for the point to be clear.

"I had been looking forward to seeing you," I added.

He did not answer immediately.

I could hear a faint sound on his end of the call, but I could not make out what it was.

I waited.

Then he said he understood.

His response was brief.

It did not explain why he had sent the message.

It did not offer the apology I had hoped to hear.

Still, I was glad I had spoken.

I told him that I did not want an argument.

I only wanted him to know how the message had affected me.

He said he had things to take care of.

I told him I understood.

We ended the call.

I sat with the phone in my hand for several seconds.

My first feeling was disappointment.

My second was relief.

I had said what I needed to say without apologizing for having feelings.

I had not demanded that he agree with me.

I had not threatened to withdraw my love.

I had simply told the truth about my own experience.

That mattered.

I returned the book to the table and went into the kitchen.

The folded paper was still beside the notebook.

I picked it up and read it one last time.

Then I tore it in half and placed the pieces in the wastebasket.

I no longer needed it.

I had spoken the words myself.

I did not know whether Benjamin would think about the conversation later.

I did not know whether he would apologize.

But I had finally stopped waiting for permission to acknowledge that he had hurt me.

That evening, I made dinner and ate at my usual place.

The chair across from me remained empty.

I looked at it once, then turned my attention back to my plate.

I was still sad.

I still loved my son.

And I still hoped that one day we would be able to speak more honestly with each other.

But I was no longer willing to pretend that silence was the same thing as understanding.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: The More I Tried to Separate
