I asked.

There was a pause.

He began explaining his situation.

I listened without interrupting.

When he finished, I asked him what he thought he could manage himself.

Another pause followed.

It was longer this time.

"I haven't worked everything out yet," he said.

I understood that.

I also understood that I had often made it unnecessary for him to work everything out before calling me.

I had been so quick to step in that I had rarely given him a reason to consider another option.

"I'm sorry things are difficult," I told him.

He thanked me.

Then he waited.

I could feel the conversation approaching the familiar point where I would offer money and he would accept with relief.

Instead, I said I needed time to think before making any financial commitments.

The words sounded stiff coming from my mouth.

I wished they had come out more naturally.

Benjamin went quiet.

"Okay," he said eventually.

I could not tell whether he was disappointed or simply surprised.

Perhaps both.

We spoke for another minute or two.

Then he said he had to go.

I told him to take care.

He ended the call.

I remained at the table with the phone in my hand.

Nothing dramatic had happened.

I had not accused him of anything.

I had not refused a specific request.

I had simply declined to promise money during a conversation that had not even reached a clear amount.

Yet my heart was beating faster than it should have been.

I placed the phone beside the receipts.

Then I sat quietly until the feeling passed.

I was proud of myself.

I was also sad.

I had not realized how much courage it would take to say something so ordinary to my own child.

That evening, I thought about the call while I prepared dinner.

Benjamin had not mentioned the message telling me to stay away.

He had not explained why I had been excluded.

I could not know what he was thinking.

Perhaps he believed the dinner was a small matter that did not deserve another discussion.

Perhaps he expected me to move on because I usually did.

I had no way of knowing.

But I did know that I was tired of being the person who carried every uncomfortable conversation until it became easier for everyone else.

I ate dinner at my own table.

I rinsed my plate and placed it in the rack.

Then I opened the drawer and took out the notebook.

I turned to the page with the yearly total.

I looked at the figure once.

Then I closed the cover.

I was not going to spend the rest of my life punishing myself for the choices I had made.

The money was gone.

The past was finished.

But the next payment had not happened yet.

That was where I still had a choice.

I returned the notebook to the drawer.

Before going to bed, I checked my phone.

There was no new message from Benjamin.

For once, I did not feel compelled to send one first.

I turned off the light and went to sleep knowing that I had done something small but important.

I had allowed my son to have a problem without immediately making it mine.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: His Voice Still Made Me Want to Fix Everything, but I Was Finally Learning That Listening to My Son Did Not Require Opening My Purse

The next morning, I woke with one thought already waiting for me.
