Maybe have Theo over. Make one of Jack's favorite meals."

Daniel considered it.

"I think he'd like that."

I smiled faintly.

"Jack would probably complain about the food."

Daniel laughed.

"He always did."

For a moment, the memory was almost painless.

Then it wasn't.

I felt the familiar ache in my chest.

Daniel reached for my hand.

We sat quietly until the feeling passed enough for us to continue our morning.

Later that week, Theo came over.

I told him about the idea.

He looked surprised.

"I'd like that."

"I don't want it to feel like a formal event."

"It doesn't have to."

He thought for a moment.

"Maybe we could look through the photographs again."

I smiled.

"That sounds good."

We agreed to keep it simple.

There would be food.

There would be photographs.

There would be stories about Jack.

We would not try to make the day perfect.

I had learned that perfect days were often just ordinary days remembered from a distance.

What mattered was that we would be together.

After Theo left, I found Daniel looking through the photograph box.

He had taken it from Jack's room and placed it on the living room table.

He was sorting the pictures into small groups.

Some were family photographs.

Others showed Jack with friends.

Several showed Theo.

Daniel held one of those for a long time.

I sat beside him.

"What are you thinking?"

He looked at the picture.

"I'm thinking about how much of Jack's life happened when we weren't there."

I nodded.

"That's true for everyone."

"I know."

He turned the photograph over.

"I suppose I just hadn't thought about it this way before."

I waited.

He continued.

"When Jack was younger, I thought being a good father meant making sure he had what he needed. A safe home. An education. Someone to turn to when things went wrong."

"You gave him those things."

"I hope so."

He looked at me.

"But I think I sometimes confused providing for him with knowing him."

I felt the truth of that.

I had made a similar mistake.

I had believed that because I was his mother, I would recognize when something important was happening in his life.

I had assumed that love gave me a special kind of understanding.

It gave me many things.

It gave me memories.

It gave me the privilege of raising him.

It gave me a lifetime of small moments I would always carry.

But it did not make me capable of knowing everything.

"I think we both did that sometimes," I said.

Daniel nodded.

He placed the photograph in a separate pile.

"What do you think Jack would say if he could see us now?"

I considered the question.

"He'd probably tell us to stop making everything so serious."

Daniel laughed.

"That sounds right."

Then his expression softened.

"And he'd probably be glad we're talking to Theo."

I looked at the photographs.

"I hope so."

Daniel took my hand.

"I think so."

We sat together until the afternoon light began to fade.

The next time Theo visited, he brought a small notebook.

He placed it beside the photographs.

"I found this while I was going through some things," he said.

I looked at it.

"What is it?"

"Just notes. Things Jack and I wrote down sometimes. Places we wanted to go, things we wanted to do."

He opened the notebook.

The pages contained brief entries.

Some were practical.

Some were jokes.

A few were plans that had never happened.

I felt a familiar sadness.

There were so many ordinary futures Jack had assumed he would have.

A meal.

A trip.

A day spent doing nothing in particular.

I wanted to read every page.

I also wanted to close the notebook and protect myself from the knowledge of what would never happen.

Theo seemed to understand.

"We don't have to look through it all now."

I nodded.

"Thank you."

We read a few entries together.

One described a place they had wanted to visit.

Another mentioned a meal Jack had insisted he could make.

I smiled.

"He never learned."

Theo laughed.

"No. He really didn't."

We continued reading.

Then I reached a page with only a few words written on it.

I read them twice.

They were not a revelation.

They were not an explanation of the dress.

They were simply a note about making time for people who mattered.

I looked at Theo.

"Did Jack write this?"

He nodded.

"Yes."

I traced the edge of the page without touching the writing.

It sounded like something my son would have said.

He had always understood that people mattered.

Perhaps he had understood it better than I had.

I closed the notebook gently.

I didn't need to turn it into a message meant specifically for me.

It was enough that Jack had written it.

The thought stayed with me that evening.

After dinner, I stood at the kitchen window and looked out at the dark garden.

I thought about the funeral.

For a long time, I had remembered it as the day something went wrong.

The day Theo arrived wearing red.

The day Daniel became silent.

The day I discovered that my family was not as simple as I had believed.

But perhaps the funeral had not broken anything that was whole.

Perhaps it had revealed the places where we had been relying on assumptions instead of understanding.

That was painful to admit.

It was also useful.

I could not change what had happened.

I could not return to the chapel and behave differently.

I could not ask Jack to tell me what he had needed.

But I could choose what the memory meant to me now.

I could remember Theo walking through the doors.

I could remember that he came even though he knew people might judge him.

I could remember the way he looked at Jack's coffin.

I could remember the words he spoke when he finally explained himself.

He had not wanted to cause a scene.

He had not wanted to make anyone uncomfortable.

He had wanted to say goodbye without hiding.

That was something I could understand.

Not because I had experienced his life.

Because I could recognize the human need beneath his choice.

To be seen.

To be accepted.

To be allowed to grieve without defending the shape of your grief.

I turned away from the window.

Daniel was standing in the doorway.

"Are you all right?"

I nodded.

"Yes."

He came over and stood beside me.

We looked at the photograph on the table.

Jack was smiling.

For a while, neither of us spoke.

Then Daniel said, "I'm glad Theo is still coming around."

"So am I."

He put his arm around my shoulders.

I leaned against him.

The house was quiet, but it no longer felt as though every silence contained something we were afraid to say.

Some silences were simply places to rest.

Some memories could remain unfinished.

Some questions did not need an immediate answer.

I was learning to live with those truths.

I was learning that the people we loved could remain mysterious to us without becoming strangers.

And I was learning that family was not something we proved by knowing everything about one another.

It was something we practiced.

In the way we listened.

In the way we apologized.

In the way we left a chair open at the table.

I looked at the photograph one last time before turning off the kitchen light.

Jack was gone.

Nothing we did could change that.

But the love he had left behind was still here, moving through the people who remembered him.

I wanted to take care of it.

Not by keeping everything exactly as it had been.

By making sure there was room for the truth, even when the truth was unfamiliar.

Click here to continue reading: PART 17: The Empty Chair at Our Table
