But the ordinary things are what you miss when someone is gone."

I felt my throat tighten.

He was right.

I missed Jack's ordinary presence.

I missed knowing he might call.

I missed hearing his voice from another room.

I missed the small annoyances that had once seemed like part of the furniture of my life.

I had spent so much time trying to remember everything important that I had almost overlooked the things that made him feel alive in my memory.

"What do you remember most?" I asked.

Theo looked at the photograph.

"The way he listened when I thought nobody wanted to hear me."

I sat still.

He continued quietly.

"He didn't always know what to say. Sometimes he would just sit there and let me talk."

I thought about what he had told me earlier.

Jack had sometimes needed us to listen before trying to fix things.

I could see the pattern now.

Not a secret I had failed to uncover.

A quality my son had carried into his relationships.

He had made room for people.

He had allowed them to speak without immediately deciding what their feelings meant.

I had admired his kindness when I saw it.

I had not always understood what it required.

"That sounds like Jack too," I said.

Theo nodded.

We sat quietly for a moment.

Then he looked at me.

"I was afraid you would remember him differently after the funeral."

I frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"I was afraid the dress would change the way you thought about him. Or about me."

I set my cup down.

"The dress didn't change who Jack was."

Theo looked at me.

"I know that now," I added. "But I think I was so surprised that I forgot to ask myself what the day meant to you."

He nodded slowly.

I continued.

"I was looking for an explanation because I wanted to understand something unfamiliar. I didn't realize that, in doing that, I was making you feel as though you had to defend yourself."

Theo's eyes filled.

"I didn't want to defend myself at Jack's funeral."

"I know."

"I just wanted to say goodbye."

I felt tears move down my face.

"I'm sorry."

He shook his head gently.

"I believe you."

We sat there for a long time.

I didn't reach across the table to touch his hand.

I wasn't sure whether he wanted that.

Instead, I stayed where I was and let him speak.

He told me about the last ordinary conversation he remembered having with Jack.

It had not been dramatic.

They had discussed something unimportant.

They had made plans.

They had assumed there would be another conversation.

Theo's voice faltered when he reached that part.

I listened.

I didn't tell him that everything happened for a reason.

I didn't tell him he needed to be strong.

I didn't tell him Jack would have wanted him to stop crying.

I had said versions of those things to people before.

I had meant to help.

Now I understood that sometimes the most useful thing I could offer was the space to feel what had happened.

When Theo finished, I handed him a tissue.

He took it.

"Thank you."

I nodded.

We sat together until the tea had gone cold.

Then he looked at the flowers near the window.

"Jack liked flowers," he said.

I smiled.

"He liked receiving them. He wasn't very good at remembering to water them."

Theo laughed.

"That's true."

I looked at the flowers.

They would last a few days.

Then they would wilt.

I no longer felt that this made them meaningless.

Something could be temporary and still matter.

A conversation could end.

A visit could last only an hour.

A life could be far shorter than the people who loved it expected.

None of that meant the love had been wasted.

When Theo left, I stood in the doorway and watched him walk toward the street.

I remembered the first time he had entered the chapel.

The red dress.

The whispers.

The way I had stared.

I remembered the person I had been in that moment.

I had been grieving.

I had been frightened.

I had been trying to hold on to the version of my family that I understood.

I could forgive myself for being human.

But I could not use that forgiveness as an excuse to stop learning.

I went back into the kitchen.

The photograph remained on the table.

I picked it up and looked at Jack's face.

For the first time in weeks, I didn't search it for a clue.

I didn't wonder whether he had been hiding something.

I didn't try to imagine what he might have said if he had been there.

I simply remembered him.

His laugh.

His stubbornness.

His kindness.

The ordinary ways he had made our house feel like home.

I placed the photograph back on the table.

Then I went to the sink and washed the cups.

The day continued.

The flowers remained by the window.

And I understood that remembering Jack did not require me to know every part of his life.

It required me to honor the person he had been, including the parts I had not fully seen.

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: I Had Once Believed the Funeral Was the Day Our Family Fell Apart, but I Began to See It as the Day We Were Given Another Chance to Listen

Theo came over on a clear afternoon.
