Sit down."

He pulled out a chair.

For a while, we talked about ordinary things.

He asked whether I had been sleeping any better.

I told him that some nights were easier than others.

He said he understood.

Then he looked at the photograph.

"I still can't believe he's gone."

I put the kettle down.

"Neither can I."

Theo rubbed his palms against his trousers.

"Sometimes I remember something he said, and I start laughing."

I smiled.

"That sounds like Jack."

"Then I feel guilty."

I turned toward him.

"Why?"

He looked down.

"Because I think I should be sad all the time."

I sat opposite him.

"I've felt that too."

He seemed surprised.

I explained that I sometimes laughed at a memory and then felt ashamed because the laughter made the loss feel less immediate.

As if being able to smile meant I had forgotten what had happened.

"But I've started thinking that remembering him happily isn't the same as forgetting him," I said.

Theo looked at the photograph.

"I hope that's true."

"I think it is."

We sat quietly.

I wanted to tell him that he didn't need to be careful around me anymore.

But I knew I couldn't simply declare that the problem had disappeared.

Trust was not a switch.

It was something people built through repeated experiences.

So I asked him whether he wanted another cup of tea.

He smiled.

"Yes, please."

I brought the kettle back to the table.

As I poured, he said something I hadn't expected.

"Jack used to tell me you always made too much tea."

I laughed.

"He said that?"

"All the time."

"He drank half of it himself."

Theo laughed too.

For a moment, the kitchen felt like it had years earlier.

Then Theo grew quiet.

"He talked about you a lot."

I looked at him.

"What did he say?"

"Mostly ordinary things."

I smiled.

"That sounds right."

"He told me about the meals you made. He told me about things you said when he was younger."

I listened.

"He was proud of you," Theo added.

I felt my eyes fill.

I had not expected those words.

I had been so busy wondering whether Jack had felt able to tell me everything that I had forgotten he might have carried his own understanding of me.

He had seen my mistakes.

He had known my habits.

He had probably complained about me sometimes.

But he had also loved me.

I needed to remember that without using it to avoid the harder questions.

"What else did he say?" I asked.

Theo considered the question.

"He said you tried to help, even when he didn't ask."

I laughed softly.

"That sounds like me."

"He said sometimes he needed you to listen before trying to fix things."

The laughter left me.

I looked at him.

Theo seemed worried that he had gone too far.

"I'm sorry," he said.

"Don't be."

I took a breath.

"He was right."

Theo's shoulders relaxed slightly.

I had spent years believing that helping meant finding a solution.

If Jack had a problem, I wanted to know what had caused it.

If he was unhappy, I wanted to make him feel better.

If he was worried, I wanted to reassure him.

I had thought those responses were proof of love.

Sometimes they were.

But perhaps there had been moments when Jack had needed me to sit beside him without trying to make his feelings easier for me to understand.

I couldn't know how many times that had happened.

I could only admit that it was possible.

"I wish I had asked him what he needed more often," I said.

Theo looked at me.

"I think he knew you loved him."

"I hope so."

"He did."

I nodded.

I wanted to believe that the two things could be true together.

That Jack had known I loved him.

That I had sometimes misunderstood him.

That neither truth had to cancel the other.

After Theo left, I sat alone at the kitchen table.

The photograph stood between the two empty cups.

I looked at Jack's face.

I wondered how many conversations I had ended by saying that everything would be fine.

How many times had I told him not to worry when what he needed was for someone to take his worry seriously?

How many times had I answered a difficult question with reassurance because I was afraid of what might happen if I let the conversation continue?

I couldn't remember.

Perhaps there had been only a few such moments.

Perhaps there had been many.

Grief encouraged me to turn uncertainty into blame.

I had to resist that temptation.

I could not know what Jack had thought about every conversation we had shared.

I could not ask him to explain.

But I could learn from what Theo had told me.

I could listen longer.

I could stop treating discomfort as a problem that needed to be removed immediately.

And I could remember that my son had been more than the things I knew about him.

He had been a person with a private life, private worries, and private joys.

I had loved him without fully knowing all of them.

That did not make my love false.

It made him human.

When Daniel returned that evening, I told him about the conversation.

He listened while I described what Theo had said.

Then he sat down beside me.

"I used to tell Jack not to worry about things," he said.

I looked at him.

"Because you wanted him to feel better?"

Daniel nodded.

"I thought that was what he needed."

"Maybe sometimes it was."

He considered that.

"Maybe."

Neither of us spoke for a while.

Then Daniel reached for my hand.

"I wish we had more time."

I squeezed his fingers.

"So do I."

We sat together beside the photograph.

For once, I didn't try to make the pain smaller.

I let it be what it was.

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: Daniel Finally Told Me Why the Funeral Had Frightened Him, and I Realized His Silence Had Been Hiding More Than Discomfort

The photograph stayed on the kitchen table for weeks.
