I don't want to do that to you again."

He didn't answer immediately.

Then he turned his hand beneath mine and held it.

"Thank you."

I squeezed his fingers.

"I can't promise I'll never make a mistake."

"Neither can I."

"But I can promise I won't ask you to hide just to make me comfortable."

Theo looked at me for a long moment.

Then he nodded.

We stayed that way until the kettle began to cool.

After he left, I thought about what I had said.

It was a promise.

Not a promise to understand everything.

Not a promise that I would always know the right words.

A promise to keep trying.

I had once believed that being a good person meant never feeling uncomfortable when someone else lived differently from me.

Now I understood that discomfort was not always the problem.

What mattered was what I did with it.

I could become defensive.

I could demand an explanation.

I could make another person responsible for helping me feel at ease.

Or I could listen.

I could admit that I didn't know.

I could allow someone else to be more complicated than the version of them I had carried in my mind.

That was what I wanted to do.

Not only for Theo.

For Jack too.

I could not ask my son what he had needed from me.

But I could learn from the questions his death had left behind.

A few days later, Daniel suggested that we invite Theo to dinner.

I was surprised.

"You mean both of us?"

He looked at me.

"Who else would I mean?"

I smiled.

"All right."

We called Theo that evening.

He sounded uncertain when Daniel invited him.

Then he accepted.

On the night he came, I made a meal Jack had always liked.

It wasn't anything special.

A simple dish we had prepared many times.

But the smell brought back memories of ordinary dinners when Jack had sat at the table and complained that I had made too much food.

I set out three plates.

For a moment, I looked at them and felt the old pain.

There should have been four.

Then I reminded myself that this meal was not an attempt to replace Jack.

It was a way to keep living with the people who remained.

Theo arrived carrying nothing.

No photographs.

No food.

No reason to apologize for taking up space.

He came inside and greeted Daniel.

They spoke briefly in the hallway.

Then they joined me at the table.

Dinner began awkwardly.

We talked about the weather.

We talked about a small problem with the kitchen tap.

We discussed whether the local shop had changed its opening hours.

It was ordinary conversation.

I was grateful for it.

Then Daniel mentioned something Jack had once done in the kitchen.

Theo laughed.

I laughed too.

For a moment, I could almost see Jack sitting with us, shaking his head at our version of the story.

The feeling passed.

But it left something behind.

After dinner, Theo helped me clear the plates.

Daniel dried the dishes.

We moved around the kitchen together, making room for one another without having to discuss it.

At one point, Theo reached for the cupboard where we kept the glasses.

He stopped before opening it.

Then he looked at me.

"Is it still all right if I get one?"

I felt a small ache in my chest.

"Of course."

He opened the cupboard.

He took a glass.

He filled it with water.

I watched him and wondered how many times he had asked permission in his mind before deciding not to do something that would have seemed natural to someone else.

I couldn't change those moments.

But I could make this one easier.

Later, we sat in the living room.

Daniel asked Theo about one of the photographs.

Theo told him the story behind it.

I listened while they spoke.

There was still sadness in the room.

There would always be sadness.

Jack had been part of our lives in a way no one could replace.

But the sadness no longer seemed to require us to keep everything else outside.

It could sit beside a laugh.

It could sit beside a meal.

It could sit beside the simple act of inviting someone in.

When Theo left, Daniel walked him to the door.

I watched from the living room.

They shook hands, then exchanged a few quiet words.

Daniel closed the door gently.

When he returned, he stood beside me.

"I think that went well," he said.

I nodded.

"I think so too."

He sat down.

For a while, we listened to the quiet house.

Then Daniel reached for my hand.

"I wish Jack could have seen us tonight."

I closed my eyes.

"So do I."

There was no comfort in pretending that the evening had repaired everything.

It hadn't.

But perhaps Jack would have been glad that we had tried.

I could not know.

I had to let the possibility be enough.

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: The Red Dress Remained the Moment That Changed Us, but It Was the Ordinary
