3 – I Tried to Remember When Theo Became One of Us, but the More I Remembered, the Less Certain I Felt

For several days, I kept thinking about the years before Jack died.

I wanted to remember them properly.

Not only the difficult days.

Not only the final week, when everything seemed to happen too quickly for me to understand.

I wanted to remember the ordinary parts of our life.

The dinners.

The conversations.

The times Theo had visited and stayed longer than expected.

The small moments that had made me think of him as family.

I believed those memories would help me understand why he had come to the funeral wearing red.

Instead, they made me realize how little I had asked him about himself.

Theo had been part of Jack's life for years.

I couldn't remember exactly when I stopped thinking of him as a friend and started thinking of him as someone who belonged with us.

There hadn't been a formal moment.

No announcement.

No conversation in which we agreed that he was now part of the family.

It had happened gradually.

He came to the house.

He sat at our table.

He joined conversations and sometimes sat quietly through them.

He learned where we kept the glasses and which cupboard held the plates.

At some point, he stopped needing to ask whether he could make himself a cup of tea.

That was how family worked in our house.

You became familiar through repetition.

You became trusted because you kept coming back.

I had believed that was enough.

When I thought about Theo, I remembered him sitting in our kitchen while Jack talked about something that had happened during the day.

Jack could talk for a long time when he was excited.

He would start with one subject, wander into another, and return to the first as though the entire conversation had followed a perfectly sensible path.

Theo listened.

Sometimes he interrupted.

Sometimes he laughed before Jack reached the end of a story.

They had a way of understanding each other that I found comforting.

I liked seeing my son with someone who seemed to appreciate him.

I liked knowing Jack had a person he could call without needing to explain every detail of his life.

I had never thought to ask whether that closeness had a name beyond friendship.

Why would I?

They were important to each other.

That had seemed sufficient.

Now I wondered whether I had avoided the question because I was afraid of what the answer might require me to understand.

The thought made me uncomfortable.

I had always considered myself an accepting person.

I believed people should be allowed to live their lives without being judged for every difference.

I had said those things often enough.

But there is a difference between believing something in general and recognizing what it asks of you when the person standing in front of you is someone you love.

I began to see that difference.

I remembered the first time Theo stayed overnight at our house.

It had been years earlier.

Jack had called to say they would be late, and I had told him not to worry about driving back if he was tired.

They arrived after dark.

I put an extra blanket in the spare room.

Theo thanked me and said he didn't want to cause trouble.

I told him he wasn't causing any.

I meant it.

At breakfast, he helped clear the table without being asked.

Daniel made a joke about Jack never learning to put his dishes in the sink.

Jack rolled his eyes.

Theo laughed.

It was an ordinary morning.

Nothing about it had seemed important.

I had thought of it as one more small step in the way our family made room for people.

Now I wondered whether Theo remembered it differently.

Perhaps he had been relieved to find a place where he could stay without having to explain himself.

Perhaps he had simply been tired.

I couldn't turn an old memory into evidence of something I hadn't known.

I had to remind myself of that.

Grief made every detail feel significant.

It encouraged you to search backward, as if the past had left a message you could discover if you examined it long enough.

But memories were not always clues.

Sometimes they were just memories.

Still, I couldn't stop thinking about the red dress.

I wondered when Theo had decided to wear it.

I wondered whether he had taken it from his wardrobe that morning or laid it out the night before.

I wondered whether he had stood in front of a mirror and considered changing.

Then I remembered how tightly he had held his hands together.

He hadn't looked like someone who was comfortable being watched.

Whatever the dress meant to him, it had not made the day easy.

I began to feel ashamed of how quickly I had judged him.

I had seen the color before I had seen the person.

I had noticed the reaction of the people around me before I had considered what Theo might be feeling.

I had treated his appearance as a problem that needed an explanation.

I hadn't thought about the courage it might have taken for him to walk into that chapel at all.

That didn't mean I understood his decision.

It meant I was finally admitting that I didn't.

One afternoon, I went into Jack's room.

I had avoided it since the funeral.

The door had remained closed, not because I had decided to preserve everything exactly as it was, but because I couldn't bear to enter and discover that the room had continued existing without him.

The first thing I noticed was the chair beside his desk.

A shirt had been draped over the back.

A small stack of papers sat near the edge.

His room looked as though he might return later and complain that someone had moved something.

I stood in the doorway for a long time.

Then I went inside.

I touched the shirt.

I picked up one of the papers and put it back.

I opened a drawer, closed it, and sat on the edge of the bed.

There were so many ordinary things I could remember about Jack.

The way he left cupboards open.

The way he would promise to call and then forget until I sent him a message.

The way he could be impatient when he was hungry.

The way he sometimes went quiet when he was thinking about something important.

I had spent years learning those habits.

I had believed they told me who he was.

Now I wondered how much of his life had happened outside my view.

I remembered conversations in which Theo had mentioned something about Jack that I hadn't known.

A plan they had discussed.

A place they had visited.

A problem Jack had already solved before he told me it existed.

I had sometimes felt left out.

Not deeply.

Not enough to complain.

I had told myself that grown men were entitled to their own conversations.

That was true.

But I could also see that I had mistaken being excluded from a detail for being excluded from the whole story.

I didn't know whether that had happened.

I only knew it was possible.

I sat in Jack's room until the light outside began to fade.

Then I closed the door gently.

At dinner, Daniel barely touched his food.

I asked whether he wanted something else.

He shook his head.

We had become careful with each other.

Every question seemed to carry the possibility of another question.

Every silence felt deliberate.

I didn't like it.

But I didn't know how to change it without making the grief heavier.

After dinner, I washed the plates while Daniel sat in the living room.

The water ran over my hands.

I kept thinking about the morning at the funeral.

Theo's red dress.

Daniel's expression.

The way he had answered my question before I had finished asking it.

I turned off the tap.

I dried my hands and went into the living room.

"Can I ask you something?"

Daniel looked up from his phone.

"Of course."

I sat across from him.

"Why were you so upset when Theo arrived?"

He lowered the phone.

"I wasn't upset."

"You were."

"I was surprised."

"So was everyone."

He looked at me for a moment.

Then he rubbed his jaw.

"It was an unusual choice."

I waited.

He didn't continue.

"That's all?"

"What else do you want me to say?"

I felt frustration rising in me.

"I don't know. Something honest."

His face changed.

Not dramatically.

He simply stopped moving.

I realized I had chosen a word that was harder to take back than I had intended.

Honest.

It suggested that I believed he had lied.

I wasn't sure I believed that.

I only knew that his answers had left me feeling as though we were talking around something.

Daniel leaned back.

"We're both exhausted."

"I know."

"And we're grieving."

"I know that too."

"Then why are we doing this?"

I looked at him.

Because I couldn't stop thinking about it.

Because Theo had looked frightened.

Because you seemed to know more than you were willing to say.

Because our son was gone, and I was beginning to understand that there were parts of his life I might never get back.

I said none of those things.

Instead, I stood.

"Forget it."

Daniel looked relieved.

I saw the relief, and it hurt more than I expected.

I went upstairs.

That night, I lay awake beside him and listened to the house.

A pipe clicked somewhere in the wall.

A car passed outside.

The refrigerator started humming downstairs.

Ordinary sounds.

I thought about the years when Jack had lived at home.

I thought about the people he had brought into our lives.

I thought about the ways we had welcomed them and the ways we might have failed to see them.

I wondered whether Theo had been trying to tell us something at the funeral.

I wondered whether he had chosen red because it was important to him, because it was important to Jack, or because he had simply reached a point where he could no longer pretend to be someone else.

I had no right to choose an answer without asking him.

The next morning, I took my phone and sent him another message.

I've been thinking about what you said outside the chapel.

I waited before sending the next line.

I don't want you to feel you can't talk to me.

I stared at the screen.

It sounded more like a promise than a question.

I sent it.

The message showed as delivered.

Then nothing happened.

I put the phone on the counter and made breakfast.

I checked it while the kettle boiled.

Nothing.

I checked it again while I stood at the sink.

Still nothing.

I told myself I shouldn't expect an immediate reply.

Theo had lost Jack too.

He might not want to talk.

He might not know what to say.

He might have decided that I wasn't the person he needed to explain himself to.

That last thought hurt, but I couldn't blame him for it.

I had spent years believing that our relationship was clear.

I had never asked him whether he felt the same way.

By the afternoon, I had almost convinced myself to leave things alone.

Then I remembered something Jack had said to me months earlier.

We had been sitting at the kitchen table.

Theo's name had come up, though I couldn't remember why.

Jack had smiled faintly and told me that Theo had been there for him during a difficult time.

I had asked whether everything was all right.

Jack had said it was.

I had accepted the answer.

At the time, I had thought I was respecting his privacy.

Now I wondered whether I had been too quick to close the conversation.

I couldn't remember the exact words he had used.

I only remembered the seriousness in his face.

He had looked as though he wanted to say more.

Then he had changed the subject.

I had let him.

That was the part that stayed with me.

Not the words I couldn't remember.

The question I hadn't asked.

I took my phone from the counter again.

This time, I didn't type anything.

I simply opened Theo's message and read his short reply from the day of the funeral.

Thank you.

Two words.

Nothing that explained the dress.

Nothing that told me what he had been carrying.

But I began to understand that the explanation might not be something he could give me in a message.

If I wanted to understand, I would have to listen.

And if I wanted him to trust me, I would have to accept that he might tell me something I wasn't prepared to hear.

I wasn't sure I was ready.

I was sure I couldn't keep pretending I didn't want to know.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: When I Finally Stopped Asking What the Dress Meant, I Began
