I knew people would stare, and I knew you were already hurting."

He looked down at his hands.

"I wanted the day to be simple."

I felt a small, painful smile form on my face.

"A funeral is never simple."

"I know that now."

He rubbed his palms together.

"I think I wanted everyone to behave in a way I understood. I wanted the service to be about Jack, and I was afraid that anything unusual would turn into something people talked about."

I considered his words.

"I think people talked because they didn't understand."

Daniel nodded.

"And I was worried about what that would do to us."

"To us?"

He looked at me.

"To our family. To the way people saw Jack. To the things they might assume."

I felt the room grow still.

I understood more than I wanted to.

Daniel had not necessarily been angry with Theo.

He had been frightened by the possibility that other people would make judgments about our son based on something they didn't understand.

He had wanted to protect Jack's memory.

But in trying to protect it, he had treated Theo's presence as a threat.

"Did you think the dress changed who Jack was?" I asked.

"No."

His answer was immediate.

"Then what were you afraid of?"

Daniel looked toward the dark window.

"I suppose I was afraid people would decide they knew something about Jack that they didn't."

I felt a familiar ache.

"They already did that."

He turned toward me.

"What do you mean?"

"People looked at Theo and decided what they thought about him before they knew why he was there."

Daniel lowered his eyes.

"And I did something similar," he said.

I took his hand.

"I think we both did."

He nodded slowly.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Daniel said something I hadn't expected.

"I was afraid that if people judged Theo, they would judge Jack too."

I understood.

He had spent the funeral worrying about what other people might say.

I had spent it worrying about what Theo's clothing meant.

Neither of us had paid enough attention to the person standing in front of us.

I looked at Daniel.

"I think Jack would have wanted us to treat Theo with kindness."

Daniel's eyes filled.

"I think so too."

He wiped his face with the heel of his hand.

"I should have spoken to him."

"Yes."

The word came out more firmly than I intended.

Daniel looked at me.

I didn't take it back.

"I think you should have," I said. "But you can still speak to him now."

He nodded.

"I know."

We sat together until the room grew dark around us.

Later that evening, Daniel asked whether Theo would be coming over soon.

I told him I wasn't sure.

"Would you mind asking him?"

I studied my husband.

"Why don't you ask him yourself?"

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

Then he nodded.

"All right."

He took out his phone.

I watched him type a message, read it, and delete it.

He tried again.

This time, he sent it.

A few minutes later, Theo replied.

He said he would come over on the weekend.

Daniel put the phone down.

He looked relieved.

I didn't ask him why.

The weekend arrived with rain.

Theo came in carrying a damp coat and apologizing for the weather.

Daniel told him there was no need to apologize.

I took the coat and hung it near the door.

We made tea.

We sat at the kitchen table.

For a while, we talked about ordinary things.

Then Daniel cleared his throat.

"Theo, there's something I want to say."

Theo looked at him.

"All right."

Daniel folded his hands on the table.

"I'm sorry for how I reacted at the funeral."

Theo remained still.

Daniel continued.

"I was surprised, and I let that surprise turn into distance. I should have thought about what you were going through instead of worrying about what other people might think."

Theo looked down.

"I knew people would react."

"I know."

Daniel paused.

"But I should not have made you feel that you had to explain yourself to me."

The room was quiet.

I could hear the rain tapping against the window.

Theo rubbed his thumb along the handle of his cup.

"Thank you for saying that."

Daniel nodded.

"I don't want you to think you aren't welcome here."

Theo looked up.

"I wasn't sure."

Daniel's face tightened.

"I understand that now."

He took a breath.

"I can't promise I'll always understand everything. But I don't want you to feel you have to hide something important just to make me comfortable."

Theo's eyes filled.

For a moment, I thought he might speak.

Instead, he nodded.

"That means a lot."

Daniel reached for the kettle.

"Would you like more tea?"

Theo gave a small, wet laugh.

"Yes, please."

The conversation moved on.

Not because the apology had solved everything.

Because sometimes people need a little time to sit with an apology before they can say what it means to them.

We talked about Jack.

Theo remembered something funny.

Daniel laughed.

I joined them.

The rain continued outside.

The photograph stood in the middle of the table.

I looked at it and felt that the house had become a little more honest.

There were still things we did not know.

There were still things we might never know.

But Daniel had stopped pretending his discomfort was simply practical.

He had admitted that he had been afraid.

That admission mattered.

After Theo left, Daniel remained in the kitchen.

He picked up the photograph and studied it.

"I wish I could tell Jack I was sorry."

I stood beside him.

"Me too."

He put the photograph down.

"Do you think he knew I loved him?"

I felt the question reach into a place I had tried not to examine.

"Yes," I said.

Daniel looked at me.

"I believe that."

I took his hand.

"And I think we can admit we didn't always understand him without deciding that we failed him in every way."

He looked down at our joined hands.

For a long time, he said nothing.

Then he nodded.

I knew the question would return.

It would come back when we found another photograph, when someone told us another story, or when a memory made us wonder what Jack had been thinking.

We could not prevent that.

But we could stop using uncertainty as a reason to punish ourselves.

We could acknowledge what we had missed.

We could listen to the people who had known him in ways we hadn't.

And we could make room for the truth, even when it arrived in a form we had not expected.

Click here to continue reading: PART 15: When Theo Asked Me What I Remembered Most About Jack, I Discovered That the Memories I Had Protected Were Not the Ones I Needed to Keep

Daniel had been quieter than usual since my conversation with Theo.
