he said.

I smiled faintly.

"That's what I was thinking."

We stood together for a moment.

I felt tired.

I also felt something I had not expected to feel so soon after Jack's death.

Not happiness.

Not peace.

Something smaller.

The sense that we were finally doing one thing right.

We were allowing Jack's life to be larger than the version we had understood while he was here.

We were allowing Theo to remain part of our lives without demanding that he make us comfortable first.

And we were beginning to understand that love did not give us the right to decide which parts of another person deserved to be seen.

I looked at the photograph.

Jack's smile seemed almost familiar enough to reach.

I wanted to ask him whether we were getting it right.

I wanted him to tell me we had not failed him completely.

But the room remained quiet.

There was no answer.

I had to learn to live with that.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: I Stopped Looking for a Perfect Explanation and Began Learning How to Keep My Son’s Memory Without Asking Anyone to Make It Easier for Me

I didn't tell Daniel about my conversation with Theo immediately.
