I think he's trying to understand things he didn't expect to have to understand."

"And you?"

I took a breath.

"I'm trying too."

Theo looked at me.

"I know you are."

There was kindness in his voice.

There was also caution.

I couldn't blame him for either.

We sat quietly for a moment.

Then I asked whether he wanted more tea.

He smiled faintly.

"Yes, please."

I filled the kettle.

When I returned, he had moved the photograph of Jack a little farther from the edge of the table.

He noticed me looking.

"It was about to fall."

I picked it up and straightened it.

"Thank you."

I placed it back in the middle of the table.

Neither of us mentioned the gesture again.

But I thought about it afterward.

Theo had been in our home for years.

He knew where we kept things.

He knew which cupboard held the cups and where I stored the spare tea bags.

He had once belonged here without needing to think about it.

Then he had walked into the chapel wearing red, and I had suddenly treated him as if I needed to decide whether he still belonged.

I couldn't undo that.

I could only make sure I didn't keep repeating it.

A few days later, Daniel suggested that we look through some of Jack's photographs together.

He said it while we were clearing the kitchen table.

I looked at him, surprised.

"Are you sure?"

He nodded.

"I think we should."

I brought the photographs downstairs.

There were more than I remembered.

Some were in envelopes.

Others had been tucked into a small box in Jack's room.

We spread them across the table.

For a while, we looked at them without speaking.

Then Daniel picked up one of Jack and Theo.

It showed them standing outdoors, squinting into the sunlight.

Jack's arm rested across Theo's shoulders.

Theo was laughing.

Daniel studied it for a long time.

"I remember this day," he said.

I looked at him.

"You do?"

He nodded.

"They came back late. Jack said they'd lost track of time."

I remembered that evening.

I had complained that dinner had gone cold.

Jack had apologized, then made a joke about how the food would have survived if I hadn't cooked enough for six people.

I had laughed despite myself.

At the time, it had seemed like nothing.

Now the memory felt different.

Not because it had become sad.

Because I could see how many ordinary moments had existed beyond the details I had paid attention to.

Daniel returned the photograph to the table.

"They were close," he said.

"Yes."

He looked at me.

"I think I knew that."

I waited.

"But I don't know if I understood what it meant to them."

I felt a strange sense of relief.

Not because Daniel had discovered some hidden answer.

Because he had finally admitted that there might be questions neither of us could answer without listening to someone else.

I reached for his hand.

"We don't have to understand everything today."

He nodded.

We continued sorting the photographs.

Sometimes we laughed.

Sometimes we sat quietly.

When we came across a picture that brought back a particularly painful memory, we let it rest on the table until we were ready to look at the next one.

It was the first time since Jack's death that I had felt we were remembering him rather than simply mourning him.

That evening, Theo sent me a message.

He asked whether I had been looking through the photographs.

I told him we had.

He replied that there were a few more he could bring over.

I thanked him.

Then I sat with my phone in my hand, wondering whether to ask him about the red dress.

I had promised myself I would stop treating it as a mystery that needed solving.

But I still wanted to understand.

There was a difference between curiosity and judgment, though I was not always sure where one ended and the other began.

I typed a question.

Then I deleted it.

I typed another.

I deleted that too.

Finally, I put the phone down.

If Theo wanted to explain the dress, he would have to do so in his own time.

I could not make the meaning belong to me simply because I had witnessed it.

The next afternoon, he came over with another envelope of photographs.

He placed it beside the others.

We sat together and began looking through them.

One showed Jack standing beside a window.

Another showed him laughing at something outside the frame.

A third showed the two of them sitting at a table with their heads close together.

Theo smiled at that one.

"Jack was trying to convince me he could cook."

I laughed.

"That was always a dangerous claim."

"He was very confident."

"Confidence was never his problem."

Theo looked at me.

For a moment, the smile faded.

"That's true."

He placed the photograph on the table.

I waited.

He seemed to be deciding whether to say something more.

Then he asked, "Did Jack ever tell you that he worried about being understood?"

I felt my chest tighten.

"No. Not in those words."

Theo nodded slowly.

"He worried that people would hear one thing and decide it meant something else."

I looked at him.

"Did he tell you that?"

"Sometimes."

Theo's fingers rested on the edge of the photograph.

"He didn't want to spend his life explaining himself to people who had already decided what they thought."

I remembered the chapel.

I remembered the whispers.

I remembered the way I had watched Theo walk down the aisle and immediately wondered what everyone else would make of him.

I had been one of those people.

I had not said anything cruel.

I had not told him to leave.

But I had looked at him as though he owed me an explanation.

That was enough to make me uncomfortable now.

"I wish I had understood that sooner," I said.

Theo looked at me.

"So do I."

His answer was gentle.

It was also honest.

I could have asked what else Jack had told him.

I could have asked whether my son had ever spoken about us.

Instead, I let the conversation rest.

We continued looking through the photographs.

When Theo left, I walked him to the door.

He paused before stepping outside.

"I want to tell you something," he said.

I felt myself grow still.

"All right."

He looked back toward the kitchen.

"I didn't wear the dress to make anyone uncomfortable."

"I know."

"I knew people might react. I just couldn't spend that day pretending I was someone else."

I nodded slowly.

"I understand that better now."

He studied my face.

"I don't expect everyone to understand everything about me."

"I know."

"But I didn't want Jack's funeral to be another day when I had to hide."

I felt tears gather in my eyes.

I didn't wipe them away.

"I'm sorry you felt you had to hide before that day."

Theo looked down.

For a moment, I thought he might say something more.

Instead, he nodded.

"Thank you."

He stepped outside.

I watched him walk toward the end of the path.

The explanation was not complete.

I still didn't know everything the dress meant to him.

But I understood the choice more clearly.

He had not come to challenge us.

He had come to mourn Jack without denying a part of himself.

I closed the door gently.

In the kitchen, the photographs remained spread across the table.

I returned to them and sat down.

The red flowers from the funeral were long gone.

The cups had been washed.

The cards had finally been put away.

But the photograph of Jack and Theo still stood in the middle of the table.

I looked at it and understood that the important thing was not whether I could explain every part of their relationship.

It was whether I could accept that their relationship had mattered in ways I might never completely know.

For the first time, I thought I could.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: The Question I Finally Asked Daniel Was Not About the Dress, but About the Silence We Had Built Around Our Son

The first time Theo came over after Daniel's apology, I noticed that he didn't hesitate at the door.
